Did you know that the Texas Eagle is the longest passenger train route in the United States? If you ever get the chance, you should try taking the entire route from Chicago to L.A.! I've never taken Amtrak long distance, but I've seen many videos of people doing so, and I hope to try it one day! The Texas Eagle has an incredible route! I'm not sure if I'll ever take the full line, maybe sometime in the future I will, but I will be taking it from Chicago to Austin in about a month in a roomette which should be great! I highly recommend checking out Amtrak's long distance trains, although be prepared for late trains and plenty of delays.
Took eagle from Pontiac Illinois to San Antonio in April, 4hours late arrival. Going home was 3 hours late. Not a bad journey just late coming and going.
The barring coach passengers from the dining car issue was brutal. Granted, the selection of food offered at the bar has expanded over the past few years, but I foresee many repeat meals in my coming travels.
Yeah no full dining and still no sightseer lounge which is required for a train this long. I miss the days when the Texas Eagle was a proud train, carrying a baggage car and 7 cars.
Traditional dining has returned to many long distance trains. Food has improved plus wine was a free option at dinner service. Up grading food services would attract ticket sales.

@@LonestarTrips The only thing for me is I don't like bathroom review but it appears I'm literally the only person on the planet who feels this way for some reason. Like the look at stations and attractions though.
@@LonestarTrips I'm sure Freud could come up with convincing reasons but I just feel it's too much focus on the less pleasant part of life and I'm not as much of a clean freak as many. Also it seems like too much credit/blame is often given to the train company since the room could have been spotless when last they touched it but if someone decided to make a total mess in there just before the blogger went in, the train company gets a bad review.
@@LonestarTrips Also, now that I've got you, no one ever shows seat back pockets/nets in use which might be good as I'm not sure what they're for. Same goes for 'cup holders' on seat back trays; does 1/8 inch recess actually stop your coffee from spilling? We need to know darn it! Perhaps add variety in your videos by seeing what will/will not fit into seat back pockets and which cup/flask/jug/flagon will fit into cup holders. I'd suggest stress testing power sockets too but that might cause a fire/get you thrown off so best not.
This train is a sad remnant of what it once was. I recall travelling in the early 1960s from Houston to Dallas via Temple with a change from the ATSF to the MKT. The stations are several blocks away from each other. The MKT's "Texas Special" still offered a dining car, which served excellent meals a reasonable prices. Ah, those were the days. Today's "Texas Eagle" transfers from the former MKT track [now UP] to the former ATSF track [now BNSF] a few blocks south of the former MKT station [now demolished].
My grandfather was chief clerk at MoPac in Houston. We took trains often during my childhood. The changes in the last several years are disappointing and heartbreaking . Want my grandkids to experience the glory of past railroad travel. Maybe someday but certainly not now.
Smaller bags can be put on the racks above the seats, or beneath the seat in front. If you're travelling with larger suitcases, then there are luggage racks on the lower level.
How did you get to San Marcos before New Braunfels? :) SM is between NB and Kyle. Regardless, I appreciate you doing this! I have never taken a train, but have always wanted to. I'm in Austin, but from Del Rio. I would have done it before now, but the hours....turns a 4 hour trip by car into an 8+ hour trip, so I just haven't. Honestly, I wouldn't mind the hours if the scenery I had never seen before. Again, thank you! I always wondered what the train was like, and you made it possible!
Whoops! I must’ve gotten the footage mixed up while editing. Good catch! I’m glad you enjoyed, though! I agree that it’s hard to justify taking the train when it takes so long to get from A to B, but it’s worth doing at least once just for the experience.

First time viewer. Great video. But San Antonio native. I think you got it backwards but, chronologically speaking, New Braunfels comes before San Marcos when heading north out of San Antonio.
Planning on bringing my girl down to visit from Cali, and never knew the Amtrak ran from LA to SA. The Sunset Station looks unoccupied and vacant, never knew it was still functional
Nice. Though for expediency for SA to Dallas, I'd likely rent a car and take 35 all the way up. It would all depend on cost, but the drive isn't usually bad.
If I was actually making the journey for business reasons, I would drive or fly to ensure I actually get there in a reasonable amount of time. That being said, I was in no rush to get to Dallas, and really just wanted to experience the train ride for what it was!
San Antonio used to have a rather grand passenger rail station during the golden age of passenger rail travel when dozens of trains would pass through San Antonio daily.
@@LonestarTrips You still can! Not in the same way of course but Sunset Station is still around. It used to just be an event center (We had high school prom, wedding there etc) but it's now an upscale night club (called the Espee) as well. Totally understand if that's not your thing but the inside is beautiful and it's cool to be able to check it out without having to host a $5k event there. It's not too far down the street from the Amtrak station if you're ever back in town.
There used to be two stations in San Antonio. The Southern Pacific station adjacent to the present Amtrak station and the Missouri Pacific station on the west side of downtown alongside the MoPac tracks.
This is a must for me now 😁 thanks ..never even knew it was called The Texas Eagle, I always thought it was called Amtrak or TRE 🤷🏼♀️. Will be waiting for part 2 😁
Amtrak is the train company. Texas Eagle is the name of this specific train. Amtrak operates other trains all over the country each with different names.
It’s only practical if you’re spending all of your time downtown in either city. Otherwise, you’ll need to Uber/Lyft to the suburbs or, if you’re really lucky, find a rental car location near the station. Any $s you had hoped to save are blown finding other types of transportation just to get around town. Good luck!
Just confused by the route, in which you say the first stop is San Marcos, then passing through New Braunfels. Physically impossible since you would have to back track from San Marcos back towards San Antonio to get the New Braunfels. I suspect you stop order was the reverse of that New Braunfels, then San Marcos, followed by Austin, etc.
Yes the footage is in order, you just swapped the names. And no, the scenery is not that exciting here when there are no clouds. Low rolling hills covered in scrub cedar and low live oaks, dry as a bone……
Cars and busses can take a more direct route, and unfortunately, the tracks are owned by freight railways, so Amtrak trains have to wait for freight trains all the time.
The "Texas Eagle" is a poor excuse for a train serving two large and dynamic cities in Texas - Austin and Dallas. In Europe, China and Japan fast and frequent trains would be running all day and into the night between much smaller cities and towns. To add insult to injury Amtrak has cut the Sightseer lounge from the already anemic consist.
It's an unfortunate reality we live in. At least Amtrak has sort of realized that there is great potential in Texas, and plans on operating the "Texas Triangle" with three trains per day on each leg, although seeing as a) how long the routes are, and b) the sheer amount of delays each train sees, I'm not so sure it will work as they intend it to. Hopefully the Texas Central will open in the next decade or so and prove the true capacity of Texas as a rail center in the US.
@@LonestarTrips Just lip service. Amtrak has promised Texas politicians so much over the decades and have delivered NOTHING! Texas is the second largest state with population and their service SUCKS... Where is that direct daily train from Dallas to Houston? Two of the top seven largest metros in the nation without direct daily train services? Me, I advocate the return of the former Burlington Texas Zephyr, Denver to Houston via Colorado Springs, Amarillo, Fort Worth and Dallas... Oh, my, a direct daily train from Dallas to Houston... @@LonestarTrips Lol. All good. Yes, as humans, mistakes do happen....I just thought maybe you knew of a secret wormhole and were holding out....I was not about to let that slide....Lol. Driving on 35 can be a pain!!
This does highlight the problem with train as a travel medium. 8 HOURS to Dallas??? Trains travel at rates that should be faster and across country. You can drive to Dallas in a rented car in half the time for that same cost if not less it seems. Still, thanks for the informative video.
There is a 40 minute refueling and refilling the water tanks layover in Fort Worth significantly slowing the clock... Minus the stops and waiting for other trains on a siding the Eagle does usually go over 60 mph...
These train tracks were laid by the backs of slaves over two hounded years ago. They have not been replaced much either. The train it self 60+ years old just been repaired and remodeled.
Nice video! About the waiting area: I highly doubt the vending machines work. I tried one once at Solana Beach Station in 2020 using quarters and it didn't work
I’m willing to bet that you’re right. I didn’t have the opportunity to use one, nor did I have any interest in doing so, but it’s a pretty good chance that they just don’t work anymore.
The bane of vending machines is too many attempting to do the Fonze on them for free snacks and drinks. The mechanisms which take paper bills now instead of just coins are not designed to such rough treatment...
This is interesting. Those wet floor leading to the bathroom, is typical for public facilities. Always creeps me out. Those cups may be for you to rinse your mouth out when and if you brush your teeth, and not for drinking, just my guess. I also noticed a dog, is there a separate compartment for them or are they onboard with travelers?
@@yolandatorres3823 Visit Amtrak's website and select a trip from Dallas to San Antonio with your desired date and number of passengers. That should give you options for your travel. Hope this helps!
Prices vary considerably depending upon when you book and when you travel as all of the prices in the hospitality industry are DYNAMIC. The fuller it is, the higher the price... Usually coach fares are competitive with airline and bus fares. Sleepers are another story... Get Amtrak promotions notifications from their website to catch the best fares, and be flexible when booking, even a single day can make a significant difference. Above all, avoid holidays...
It really depends on your start and end points! For me, the round trip cost right around $40, taking the train up on a Monday and then back down on a Tuesday. Tickets fluctuate in price often, and if you plan far enough in advance, you may be able to find them for cheaper.
@@johnp139 Price is listed in the description. I really should have stated how much the ticket was in the video, but I just forgot. I’ll be sure to add it in part 2.
A pretty objective review of Amtrak. I can readily sympathize with his review of " breakfast" from the cafe/diner. Amtrak's food offerings for coach passengers vary from somewhat adequate and over priced to abysmal and over priced. If possible bring your own food and buy only drinks.
Indeed it does! The southbound Texas Eagle (Train 21) runs daily on that route. I believe the train leaves Dallas around noon and gets into San Antonio around 9pm, although I’m not certain those times are accurate.
Nice video but it doesn't show much of San Antonio which is the most visited city in Texas which also has the most vibrant city center in the state. The Amtrack station at Sunset Station/ St. Paul Square historic district has beautiful architecture. Austin is pretty as well with it's new skyline.
Unfortunately, my time in San Antonio was very limited. I got to the station just as boarding began right at 6:15am, and I only had a few minutes at the end of my trip to grab a few more shots.
Hi, can you please tell how much baggage is allowed if someone is taking this train from Chicago to dallas? I am curious if I will be allowed to take 2 normal sized suitcases (which usually go into checked baggage in flights) aboard on my ticket? Thanks
As per Amtrak's baggage policy, passengers are allowed 2 Personal Items and 2 Carry-On bags per ticket, and are also allowed to check 2 bags for free. If you want more specifics, then I suggest looking up the baggage policy. Hope this helps!
Dude, you didn't venture past the reception area into the the REAL station. San Antonio's Sunsetl Station is where Selena filmed her music video! People do realize that this area is just reception! Sunset station is older then the trains themselves so we don't us it in order to preserve it.
Honestly, I'm not sure. I think it's anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours in total across a whole route. I think freight delays account for more problems than smoke stops do.
The smoke stop usually are planned at the larger stops with more passengers. Amtrak is a hotel train with many of the passengers lugging multiple bags, not a commuter train with many of the passeengers lugging only a briefcase or backpack... Very rarely can a smoker smoke the entire cigarette...
Just wait until you see what I have in store! I’m taking a huge trip at the end of June to gather footage for this channel, with the majority of the content revolving around the northeast corridor!
Amtrak has become a nightmare. Long gone are the glory days. It is just a shell of its former self. Plus, it’s easier to drive from San Antone to Dallas, especially with the loop around Austin. Yee haw! 🤠
The bagels should have been toasted, and the trash can liner should have been placed inside the trash can. Quality matters Amtrak. Impress your customers.
Texas needs a more streamlined experience for tain rides up and down 35. A more expediant way so more people feel encouraged to use it. As it stands, 3 lanes of interstate is not enough for the amount of traffic on 35.
I know im late but thank u for your video i was wondering about the train here. Am i able to take train here and go to mobile Alabama instead of greyhound or flying? Everyone please stay safe and blessed much love from San Antonio
If you want to do that, you would need to take the Sunset Limited to New Orleans and then transfer to a bus or some form of private transport. Amtrak discontinued all sunset limited service east of NOLA after hurricane Katrina.
Sleeper car is a good call. It was just too expensive for this leg to justify it. That being said, I’ll be taking a sleeper from Chicago to Austin in a few weeks time!
The title only says “New Interiors,” not “New Coaches.” Nothing about what is shown or written indicates new coaches. Amtrak hasn’t even announced who the contract will be with for the new cars, just that they’ll be made. Plus, this review was made months before that announcement.

@@PtownSoccer15 The Eagle north of San Antonio and the Capitol Limited share the same train sets, and neither will see the Sightseeing Lounge soon as these transits are the ones Amtrak stole to refurbish the the entire fleet of Sightseeing Lounges a few at a time...
Any idea if this is still the current situation of the Texas Eagle? 😢 I’ve been wanting to ride it and reading this made me sad.
Did you know that the Texas Eagle is the longest passenger train route in the United States? If you ever get the chance, you should try taking the entire route from Chicago to L.A.! I've never taken Amtrak long distance, but I've seen many videos of people doing so, and I hope to try it one day! If I ever do, I would probably start with either the Silver Meteor or the Lake Shore Limited since I live in New York.
Anyways, I hope you have a nice rest of the day!
@@LonestarTrips That's great! I look forward to seeing that video!
Took eagle from Pontiac Illinois to San Antonio in April, 4hours late arrival. Going home was 3 hours late. Not a bad journey just late coming and going.
Thanks for your unbiased review. I agree the food is crap and barring coach passengers from the dining car should be a capital offense.
@@johnsons74thsquadron74 Unfortunately when Amtrak chose to refurbish their entire fleet of Sightseeing Lounges, they had to start pulling cars somewhere. Amtrak chose to steal them from the Eagle/Capitol Limited shared transits. They won't return on the Eagle/Capitol Limited shared transits until all of the fleet have been refurbished...
@@ronclark9724 so that’s why those two trains both lost it at the same time. I didn’t know they shared trainsets.
This makes me want to try this! Thanks for sharing!
Living in SA, I just discovered that we have an Amtrak from SA to Austin for around $12 to $15 a day. I plan to try it soon since that occasional weekend drive to Austin is getting more and more congested. I used to get to Austin in 45 minutes. Now it’s an hour and a half.
FYI there is a notch in the tray table latch to hook the aisle seat's phone charging cord across the back of the seats.
Amazing video as always!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed! I was hoping to put this trip out in one part, but it would’ve been close to 30 minutes, so I would’ve had to cut quite a bit of content to get it to a reasonable point. I figured 2 videos with more information is better than one, so here we are!
Yeah. Never done a trip review but in December of 2021 I rose the Acela from Metropark station in New Jersey to Boston South Station, it was a nice ride overall, with comfortable seats

I like your trip reports much more than many others who do this; your plan speaking, free of pretentiousness and nonsense is great and teasing next week's video is a trick that almost all UA-camrs seem to miss so well done bro, good job.
Thanks man. It really means a lot to hear that. I do my best to put out content that I would find entertaining as an outsider, and it's always welcome feedback to hear that people appreciate the videos I make.
@@LonestarTrips The only thing for me is I don't like bathroom review but it appears I'm literally the only person on the planet who feels this way for some reason. Like the look at stations and attractions though.
@@SirKenchalot haha it’s all good. Not every part of the video is for everyone. Any reason why you didn’t like it?
Looking forward to part two thanks!
Makes me sad to hear the observation car has been cut. I love watching the scenery in the observation deck
Me too. I really hope they’ll add it back soon.
@@LonestarTrips Not until the entire fleet of Sightseeing Lounges have been refurbished. Maybe in three or four years, definitely not in months...
Thank you for the video Sir. If I may ask, Where do you put your bags? do they have to go on top?
@@LonestarTrips I agree...especially if you are a reader with a really good book! It takes all that traffic stress away and gives you time to actually look around. @@LonestarTrips Duh! I just saw it was part 1 :)
@@stephanielitton2929 haha yeah! The video would been pushing 30 minutes, so I decided to split this trip into two parts.
First time viewer. Great video. But San Antonio native. I think you got it backwards but, chronologically speaking, New Braunfels comes before San Marcos when heading north out of San Antonio.
Ha, you’re the third person to notice that! I got the footage mixed up while scripting and editing and just never caught it. Good eye though!
I'm considering of taking this train while in San Antonio for work. I'm thinking of taking it to Austin just to try it out. Thank you for tha video.
This passes by my apartment on Presa! It’s nice to see it pass. I usually stop on my dog walk and wave as it passes :)
San Antonio used to have a rather grand passenger rail station during the golden age of passenger rail travel when dozens of trains would pass through San Antonio daily.
I wish I could’ve experience that first hand! Now it’s just the strange Amtrak station.
@@MikyleChristian Espee actually closed down and they opened a new Vegas style club called 1902
There used to be two stations in San Antonio. The Southern Pacific station adjacent to the present Amtrak station and the Missouri Pacific station on the west side of downtown alongside the MoPac tracks.
@@ronclark9724 is the Missouri Pacific one on the Westside still there?
Do you know when will the observation deck return. That is the only thing stopping me from booking a ticket..
I have no idea. I’ve been checking consists pretty frequently, and no dice so far. I would hope soon, but who knows.
How did you get to San Marcos before you got to New Braunfels if you are headed to Dallas? Just curious
Ha, we didn’t. Made a mistake in the script and just never caught it before publishing.
This helps a lot. Thank you so much ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is a must for me now 😁 thanks ..never even knew it was called The Texas Eagle, I always thought it was called Amtrak or TRE 🤷🏼♀️. Will be waiting for part 2 😁
This train has been called the Texas Eagle since Missouri Pacific operated this train.
I got it backwards in the script. I just never caught it.
Yes the footage is in order, you just swapped the names.
And no, the scenery is not that exciting here when there are no clouds. Low rolling hills covered in scrub cedar and low live oaks, dry as a bone……
Did you park your car in San Antonio? I want to take a weekend trip from San Antonio, but I can''t seem to find any parking by the station
I parked at the convention center garage and walked over. Parking is a flat rate of $10 per day.
I've been seeing a lot of amtrack run from sa to Houston lately
The picture looks like Southern Utah, with the California Zephyr.
Ah, makes sense! I wasn’t sure if it was sunset limited, southwest chief, or cali zephyr.
San Antonio to Dallas
Driving: 4 hr 10 min via I-35 N
Greyhound: 5 hr 12 min. - 5 hr 56 min.
Train: Apparently 8 hrs.
Maybe if we didn't send 44 billion to Ukraine things could be better.
I very much so agree! Even California’s Amtrak is a lot more developed than ours
This does highlight the problem with train as a travel medium. 8 HOURS to Dallas??? Trains travel at rates that should be faster and across country. You can drive to Dallas in a rented car in half the time for that same cost if not less it seems. Still, thanks for the informative video.
I’m glad you enjoyed! It’s unfortunate that this is the state of travel, but here we are. Hopefully it’ll get better in the future.
Yup...I'd want to try it once or twice though just for the experience... maybe 3 times...😁
There is a 40 minute refueling and refilling the water tanks layover in Fort Worth significantly slowing the clock... Minus the stops and waiting for other trains on a siding the Eagle does usually go over 60 mph...
Or two and a half hours on the plane including TSA wait and boarding time. SA to Austin is a possibility if your business is downtown.
I was born in Terrell Texas. Which is 35 miles east of Dallas
Awesome! Have you ever taken the Texas Eagle into Dallas?

How much was it from SA to Dallas?
Prices vary considerably depending upon when you book and when you travel as all of the prices in the hospitality industry are DYNAMIC. The fuller it is, the higher the price... Usually coach fares are competitive with airline and bus fares. Sleepers are another story... Get Amtrak promotions notifications from their website to catch the best fares, and be flexible when booking, even a single day can make a significant difference. Above all, avoid holidays...
8 hours from san antonio to Dallas? Thats double the time it takes to drive! Why so long??
I guess it is slow and stops on route many times 😊
I may have missed it, but how much would a round trip just for fun weekend ride cost?
It really depends on your start and end points! For me, the round trip cost right around $40, taking the train up on a Monday and then back down on a Tuesday. Tickets fluctuate in price often, and if you plan far enough in advance, you may be able to find them for cheaper.
Right, he should at least mention how much he paid for it.
Hello there,
What I would like too know if the train goes to San, Antonio from Dallas tx.
I'm planning a trip too San, Antonio July 4.wkn .
Indeed it does! The southbound Texas Eagle (Train 21) runs daily on that route. I believe the train leaves Dallas around noon and gets into San Antonio around 9pm, although I’m not certain those times are accurate.
Thank you so much for this information...
I'm planning a 2/3day off.
Too enjoy a few days..
Once again...

Why would you take an 8 hour train ride when it’s a 5 hour drive from SA to Dallas?
For the experience! I enjoy taking the train, and this one runs through my back yard!
I have tried to catch the train office several times and it is not open. Do you know the hours it is open?
Which office are you trying to get to and in what city?
Dude, you didn't venture past the reception area into the the REAL station. San Antonio's Sunsetl Station is where Selena filmed her music video! People do realize that this area is just reception! Sunset station is older then the trains themselves so we don't us it in order to preserve it.
I've taken Austin to Dallas
8:40 lol 😂
Are they going to bring ther service back to Las Vegas soon?
Amtrak no... The only route Amtrak is developing soon is the route from Scranton to New York City...
Well yeah it would be nice if they could.
How many minutes do the smoke stops add to the already slow schedule?
Honestly, I'm not sure. I think it's anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours in total across a whole route. I think freight delays account for more problems than smoke stops do.
The smoke stop usually are planned at the larger stops with more passengers. Amtrak is a hotel train with many of the passengers lugging multiple bags, not a commuter train with many of the passeengers lugging only a briefcase or backpack... Very rarely can a smoker smoke the entire cigarette...
