    Love that little restrepia! If you want to DIY clear small pots you can buy plastic cups, poke holes in the bottom and cut them down to your desired height. Not super elegant but they get the job done

      You are welcome. I've had a small collection of Restrepias for many years and they are very rewarding. Also, more new species and hybrids are becoming available.

    Hello Howard, I always find your videos wonderfully informative. Could you possibly do a video on how you make your tidy wire hangers. Thank you

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  7 місяців тому +1

      That's a nice idea! They are very easy and it would make a nice little video. I'll put that on my list. I've also been asked in the past about doing one on the wooden baskets but that's a lot more complicated needing more tools.

    Hi Howard😌🙌I absolutely enjoyed watching🙏🌟What a grand orchid greenhouse. I am so inspired by your restrepias that I just purchased a restrepia elegans😄I really want to experience growing one, but could be a challenge knowing the Summer temperatures here. We do get a monsoon period here in Japan as it is Asia, however temperatures can be 35℃ daily. I will bring it indoors if need be. Thanks for your wonderful videos😌🤲💞I'm looking forward to the next.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I think, of all the pleurothallids, Resptrepias are some of the most tolerant so you should be okay in summer if kept as cool and shady as possible and well watered. Best regards. Howard.

    You should also get Jewel Orchids. They have beautiful leaves that look like laced with golden thunderbolts.

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  Місяць тому

      Thanks. They are very beautiful. I have been growing several jewel orchids for a couple of years but only recently got them to thrive. I will do a video in future because I know they are popular but also tricky for many people. I was waiting until I had reached the stage of being able to offer useful advice.

    Another great episode Howard. I purchased my first Dendrochillum wenzelii ' Kapoho fire", after this past Christmas from my local nursery. It was full of spikes. However, they all blasted or actually dried up before they opended. I don't have a greenhouse (wish I did). I have a bright room I use as a grow room. I keep the humidity between 45-55 at all times. I think maybe I am not watering it enough? It's in a medium bark and grow stone mix. Do you think I need higher humidity so that future spikes won't dry up on the orchid? Thanks, James

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  7 місяців тому

      My guess is the humidity is too low. The humidity in my greenhouse seldom goes below about 70%. I expect you've read about ways to increase the humidity using gravel trays, keeping several plants close together and misting occasionally? This might help for the future.

      @@HowardRice Thank you Howard for the reply. I will try to raise the humidity around my plant. I'm looking forward to future videos from you. Take care, James

    I have just purchased a few miniature orchids in little pots but would like to mount them? Any advice? they are Dinema, Stelis, Mediocalcar, Neolauchea and Restrepia.

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  5 місяців тому

      You will need pieces of cork bark some sphagnum moss and elastic, thin plastic coated wire or fishing line to do the tying. These instructions are a very useful starting point.
      wsbeorchids.org/2018/orchid-project-techniques-dividing-and-mounting-orchids/
      Here they haven't used moss but most people would use at least a little. There are also plenty of You Tube videos on mounting orchids so I would watch a few. Different people have different techniques and it is impossible to say which one would be best for your growing conditions. If you haven't grown mounted orchids before I would just try one or two to start with because they do need constant humidity and regular spraying. I would choose those that have small pseudo bulbs such as the Dinema as this will not be so sensitive to drying out compared to say a Stelis which will hate getting too dry for too long. Hope that helps.

    Where did you get the miniature phaleanoposis Thailandia? I can’t find it anywhere on the internet…

    • @HowardRice
      @HowardRice  7 місяців тому +1

      I bought it many years ago from the lovely people at Spicesotic Plants here in the UK. A good altenative is Phalaenopsis lobbii. I have two of these in flower at the moment and they are lovely. Also more widely available I think.

    I do not follow the current classification that says dendrochilums are now coelogynes. Much easier for someone to picture in his mind a Dendrochilum when you say 'Dendrochilum', rather than say 'Coelogyne' and expect him to think of a Dendrochilum. What happens when we lump genera together is that we begin to lose information. Also, at the end of the day, one must keep in mind that all these taxonomic papers are just essentially proposals. This explains why there will never be a final word in plant taxonomy. It's still up to the user- us- to decide which school of thought he is going to follow.
