I'm surprised the Ice Ferret was never in Mechwarrior 2 considering it is a mainline battlemech of Clan Wolf and it was set during the refusal war when they had well a lot of these. Instead it is Stormcrows and Jenner IICs everywhere.
The Ice Ferret in it's D config. brings back such good memories from playing Btech in the basement of our dorm back in the 90s. We used it in a narrative Clan Ghost Bear campaign. No matter how heavy the rest of our mechs got we always kept this bad boy in our star because of it's speed, durability, and back shot capability. Thank you sir for that trip down memory lane.
How sad that the only thing that the Ice Hellion's got right was the one thing they lost to their worst enemy. And the Wolves lost it to the Lyrans, as well!
Just used it against my friend for our Trial of Grievance. It and it's elementals crippled a King Crab, which won the game. The Fenris may have died, but he brought glory to Clan Jade Falcon!
From the first time I saw the mechs of the clans, in that TR3050, I had the feeling that there is an absolute difference in the way the clans operate. I believe that the medium Mechs are used more for reconnaissance and hunting of light of the inner sphere and that the light ones of the clans are used more as support and support of the heavy mech. And over the years I have not managed to get rid of that feeling, but it has been increasing, although nothing like that is said anywhere.
Several of the variants either should reduce the two additional DHSs or use other weapons to properly use their heat cap. It´s a valuable resource, and this mech squanders it. Plus the LRM variant (C) would be better served with taking one LRM15 with Artemis IV, tonnage-wise. The new artwork looks nice as well, Harri Kallio keeps delivering great images. Good man.
On the plus side, over heatsinked mechs have extra defense against surprise use of Inferno SRMs and bombs. But generally you are right that OmniMechs should use their pod space more efficiently. Especially since they rarely need to fill multiple roles at once and they can be reconfigured between battles so much faster and cheaper than standard Mechs (outside of simulators where it just takes a few clicks and maybe virtual time and money). With them it is understandable that you sacrifice individual battle efficiency so you don't have all the expense and down time to make it do something different later.
Perhaps the Fenris is a foreshadowing of a future House Steiner & Lyran Commonwealth military becoming a more lean & responsive version of its past self in the Inner Sphere, provided the faction can successfully weather its current Ilclan Age difficulties?
Aw yeah! One of the staple mechs for my mech hunting wolf pack! I love pairing this baby up with a Viper and a Mist Lynx to run through enemy formations and wound mechs before my heavies close in and finish them off.
It's weapons are a little anemic by Clanner standards, but the Prime is pretty nifty. I like it's high speed and armor as an Elemental delivery tool, and nothing with a Clan ER PPC can be bad. It's basically a gauss rifle with no ammo. It can run in, drop off some Elementals, then run around at medium distance supporting your more important mechs.
With a strong delay, for which I apologize, finally got around to watch all new videos. Regarding "not very good for trials, but ideal for a "real" battlefield", there is one point that makes it stand out a bit in view of the Clan-author. Ice Hellions use a specific version of the Zellbrigen in which medium and light 'Mechs (they really value speed as we know medium and light 'Mechs are their main vehicles) in which the 'Mechs attack in a group. So it was BUILT for group attacks, Wolves, in fact, are also lovers of "packing" tactics.
The Ice Ferret is the perfect ecapsulation of what I'd call a B+ mech. I'm never sad when it's offered, but it's also never really *wow'd* me. I always tended to drift to the Shadow Cat, or Crimson Langur, or Grendel for my fast moving clan medium. The Fenris is... fine. Good even, but just lacks that 'wow' factor, IMO.
People underestimate just how deadly this medium mech is. Designers generally made good use of its pod space. That combined with its armor and speed make this machine a potential threat to any mech in the game. Good job as always!
I really like the Ice Ferret; however, I do have one personal problem with it. It's TOO fast in my opinion. Tabletop movement profile it is an 8/12 which is nice, but dropping the engine down so it moves 7/11 instead would give it so much more potential I feel.
I like a Fenris with a Clan Large Pulse Laser, 3 Clan ER Medium Lasers, and a Clan ER Small Laser to round out that laser .5 ton. Running gives no modifier to the main weapon, and you will have a critical hit chance on a head shot. I'll take more frequent hits over the home run decapitation shot.
Idk much about battletech lore outside of these videos but from what I gather clan wolf must be like the ultramarines from warhammer 40k. The boy scouts who are just the BESTEST EVA!!! lol
3 LRM-5's with Artemis??? 😮 Yikes. Otherwise i like this mech. It somehow looks derpy and cool at the same time. It's fast and well armored, just the way i like mechs to be. It has a fun history. 👍 Another wonderful video, Red!
One of my favorite losses in MWO, back when the 4v4 scouting missions where still a thing we had a Lance of 2 HBKs and 2 BSWs..... we never stood a chance. Those clan ER large lasers and ECMs made short work of us......... hit and run to death I couldn't help but smile as we got picked off one by one
(Thank you for all the work you put into this video Red! It was great! And I loved it when you called out clan wolfs plot armour.) Nice, thank you for the lecture. A few years back a FWL veteran burned out from the civil war and looking for a new home in the periphery sold some more up to date simulator data to my families unit. It had a lot of the newer mechs and clan machines in it, by the goddess we had fun with that for months afterward although we called it training. Anyway, I instantly gravitated to Fenris D, it just suited my heavily armoured medium mech style of play and the speed was extra bonus. I freaking love pulse lasers and what they could do. That’s still one of my go to clan machines when we get together to have some fun in the simulator along with some booze and bets. I hope one day I get a chance to pilot a real one.
Another great vid :-) the fenris is always a pain in the ass mech that must die before you can move freely around the battlefield....the armour and speed combo is an awesome one that most clan mechs don't possess :-)
The C variant is a very Ice-Hellion design and makes a lot of sense given the Clan's unique take on zellbringen. It fits in well with the pack tactics the Ice Hellions are infamous for. And to be fair, *any* Clan beating the Ice Hellions in a challenge isn't exactly a huge endorsement of said clan. They're Clan Scrappy-doo after all.
Well now this mech reminds me of that story about a solder in ww2 that some how managed to get captured and fight for 3 separate armies, quite the survivor indeed. But hey can we get a vid on the BERSERKER, I am super looking forward to it getting an update, hopefully some time next year, but either way this melee giant is quickly becoming one of my favorites, i just wish that the punching rules and damage was better.
Somehow, this is the first time I heard of this thing. Pretty sweet little thing though, especially the LRM-5 based variant. As much as I dislike missile boats, that one sounds delightfully annoying.
Always liked this one due to it's odd history - first a failed clan buster by a clan, then it is accidentally well suited for the clan invasion, then eventually ends up a de facto mech for my house. It's a fun history but I've always felt it's engine size was just a bit too large. What makes omnimechs special is pod space. Downsize the engine slightly and if need be add MASC or a supercharger. If it had just an extra ton to two tons of pod space I think it'd find itself very successful in a wider range of roles while not suffering in its existing roles.
C'mon Red, beat up on the Wolves if you like, but ease up on my poor Exiles. Arc Royal was Grand Central Station for psychotic invaders ever since the Fedcom Civil War with everyone from Wobbies to the Green Pigeons under Malvina showing up to crap on it. They just got worn away until, of all things, they ended up absorbed by Alaric. Apparently they forgot to pack their plot armor with them when they moved in with the Kell Hounds.
You know, as much as people that play MWO disparagingly call this mech "the ice fridge", in the tabletop the J configuration especially should earn that moniker in a favorable fashion. Because we all know from the murder-mystery holo-vids we watched growing up that a chest freezer is the best place to hide a dead body, and the Ice Ferret-J makes A LOT of dead bodies, be that thru backstabbing or just blatantly sprinting up to a mech nearly flaunting any of the fire sent its way, and slicing off a side torso on a mech that especially in the Ilclan era will probably have some form of XL engine in it, which if it doesn't outright kill the mech at least greatly hinders its further combat viability. So the Ice Ferret-J. Yes, it's the Ice Fridge. But it's the ice fridge you find in the morgue.
One thing that occurs to me is that the reason the Wolves won so much is because how un-clan like they turned out to be after Nicholas died. Patient, far more caring of the lower castes and far less likely to constantly underestimate an opponent, they ended up doing pretty well for themselves. I wonder how many of the famous Kerensky warriors of the Clan were actually descended from Andery, rather than Nicholas.
Yea, I think it's 25 bloodname holders at a time per name. I just mean of the characters we know (Natasha, Ulric, even Ranna, Katya and Marota) we don't really know which of the lineages each is from.
While the IS does eventually have the capability of making clantech it is too expensive (both to make and buy from mercantile clanners) for very widespread use in their massive armies (mostly going to elite warriors or prestige units). That is why there are lots of budget Mechs still being made for low prestige units and planetary militias in every Great House. And as for salvage, raids for clantech are risky and also expensive even when successful. The Clans mainly get away with the expense because their warrior ruled culture doesn't allow civilians to complain that too much is spent on the military instead of civilian infrastructure, education, etcetera.
I think it makes no sense in setting that the going into to the later eras that the Clans have economies that can support that given how they trash there worlds. Also the Clans aren't the elite, the victory over the clans in the invasion showed that the IS pilots are rather the clans
@@jamesoakes192 I didn't say the clan economies could support it long term just that their civilians couldn't stop the warriors from spending whatever they could. As for the IS warriors being better it is more of a numbers game. Average clan warriors are better than average IS but there are a lot more IS warriors so they end up with more elite among them to make up for it. More importantly, when setting aside zelbrigen and using coordinated attacks most clan officers are less skilled tacticians than IS officers.
This 'Mech is what happens when you give clanners meth and the song Kickstart my Heart and tell em to make the most hype mech ever (they have plot armor)
It seems to be a trend with the clans overall that one clan (usually a smaller one) comes up with a new mech, deems it a failure, only for another clan to pick up the mech and do great with it.
would you be up for long forms on factions and groups? I would enjoy you doing a vid on the wolf's dragoons or the grey death legion, especially the northwind Highlanders and Eridani light horse
At this time those kinds of videos only get covered in voted for content which is pretty uncommon. There will be a Waco's Rangers video coming later this year.
One small laser? Who cares... infantry maybe. 4 small lasers? That's a little annoying but you can deal with it above 30 tons. 10 small lasers with heavy MG backup and a supercharger to hit your back no matter what? Now you're just being mean. Brilliant idea.
I think the most Mary Sue moment for the Wolves has to be when Vlad became Khan and noone took it over or took big chunks out of their Inner Sphere holdings when it was at its weakest. Their early victories are believable, especially in the extremely ritualized combat of the Clans, and even beating the Free Rasalhague Republic in the initial invasion. Clan Jade Falcon was in almost as bad of shape, if not for Elias Crichell's machinations they would have been, and Marthe Pryde was Ward's political ally for lack of a better word, Clan Steel Viper didn't have the will to fight either it seems, Ghost Bears need to be poked to get them to do anything, it was too troublesome for the Smoke Jaguars and Nova Cats to try and take them, but you want me to believe two or three Clans couldn't have struck the Wolves from the Periphery, dividing the planets before attacking, and not take at least a third of their holdings? I know some may say that they would be sanctioned by the other Clans, but I feel many would be of the opinion that if you didn't have the strength to maintain your hold on a world, then you did not deserve that world. Add in the fact they never moved their manufacturing to their Inner Sphere holdings until the War of Reaving, and you have to wonder how they held anything. I do see that the Wolves suffered many setbacks during the Jihad era, losing about half of their holdings in the Inner Sphere to the other 3 Clans surrounding them, so there is that time of failure for them.
@@BigRed40TECH I also think some Clans were literally made to fail. Fire Mandrills were the Fire Mandrills and were as likely to kill as work with each other. Blood Spirits, the xenophobic of the xenophobic within the Clans, though I guess all the Home Clans are xenophobic now. Burrocks and their willingness to work with the Dark Caste (pretty sure the only thing worse in Clan eyes was to work with the Inner Sphere powers) Ice Hellion and their 'speed is life' mentality and the way they seem to throw 'tantrums' in the middle of fights (at least till Connor Rood took over) Mongoose being predominately political rather than combat, but also because of, what can only be called, bloodthirsty and unprovoked attacks that annihilated colonists, set them to be 'absorbed' (I would say that aside from some aerospace lines taken by Cloud Cobra, they were really annihilated) Widowmakers weren't going to be missed by anyone. Smoke Jaguars were made to be the Inner Sphere's punching bag. Goliath Scorpions were made to be the biggest losers from the Home Clans that survived as their love, and borderline obsession, with history, especially of the Star League, would never allow them to surrender to the 'purity' that the other Home Clans wanted. The Steel Vipers should have been called the Bismuth Worms as when they are winning they are strong, but the second they start losing, they crumble to pieces, in moral if not actuality. The Wolverines were made to fail to show off Nicholas Kerensky's ego. The Nova Cats, I actually pity them. With their best joining the Republic's early military and the rest left in the Combine, with reduced manufacturing and military capabilities, they were on an uphill to rebuild. With the Black Dragon Society provoking the Second Combine-Dominion War, they were crippled at an even greater level to the point in the aftermath, the Combine took over the defense of the worlds in the Irece Prefecture with the Nova Cats being put on reservations to be subordinate to the Combine leaders. Kinda wish that Hohiro let them all go to the Republic, might have given the Republic a stronger military and stronger industrial base to where they could fight off, or at least put up better resistance, the fall of the Republic. If nothing else, it would slow Katana Tormark's advance on the Republic as she would have no Nova Cats to bargain with.
How hard would it be to put the "BattleTech: Mercenaries" reimagined new mechs into battletech 2018 and do you perhap know someknow who is already trying it and can therefore give me link to check it out?

As for the IS warriors being better it is more of a numbers game. Average clan warriors are better than average IS but there are a lot more IS warriors so they end up with more elite among them to make up for it. More importantly, when setting aside zelbrigen and using coordinated attacks most clan officers are less skilled tacticians than IS officers.
Because you have to steal the factory that makes it. Otherwise, just make your own.
In MWO i never liked the Slot Machine. The Shadowcat is slower, but does everithyng else better.
I prefer Ice Ferret as a name. Less try hard than Fenris
Posting this before everyone else's MW5: Clans stars rename the machine "Penris"
This 'Mech is what happens when you give clanners meth and the song Kickstart my Heart and tell em to make the most hype mech ever (they have plot armor)
Not sure why you edited the googly eyes out of the official clan wolf symbol...
It seems to be a trend with the clans overall that one clan (usually a smaller one) comes up with a new mech, deems it a failure, only for another clan to pick up the mech and do great with it.
Ice Hellion definitely didn't consider it a failure. They got beat up and had their lunch stolen, lol
@@BigRed40TECH well, it DID fail at putting the wolves back in their place :p
would you be up for long forms on factions and groups? I would enjoy you doing a vid on the wolf's dragoons or the grey death legion, especially the northwind Highlanders and Eridani light horse
At this time those kinds of videos only get covered in voted for content which is pretty uncommon.
There will be a Waco's Rangers video coming later this year.
One small laser? Who cares... infantry maybe. 4 small lasers? That's a little annoying but you can deal with it above 30 tons. 10 small lasers with heavy MG backup and a supercharger to hit your back no matter what? Now you're just being mean. Brilliant idea.
GORY TO CLAN METH WEASLE
Battle vslue: 10,000. It seems utterly broken. I would never allow this on my tt session
Everyone suffered "Setbacks" in the Jihad, because it was resetting the setting for Dark Age. I don't really count it.
Burrocks and their willingness to work with the Dark Caste (pretty sure the only thing worse in Clan eyes was to work with the Inner Sphere powers)
Ice Hellion and their 'speed is life' mentality and the way they seem to throw 'tantrums' in the middle of fights (at least till Connor Rood took over)
Mongoose being predominately political rather than combat, but also because of, what can only be called, bloodthirsty and unprovoked attacks that annihilated colonists, set them to be 'absorbed' (I would say that aside from some aerospace lines taken by Cloud Cobra, they were really annihilated)
Widowmakers weren't going to be missed by anyone.
10 ERSL at 172 KPH, I beg your pardon?
I wonder if this comment goes to the video or stays with stream presentation
What beats logic? Winning

How hard would it be to put the "BattleTech: Mercenaries" reimagined new mechs into battletech 2018 and do you perhap know someknow who is already trying it and can therefore give me link to check it out?
i would drop the srm2 and throw in ecm
I'd like to suggest a video where you go through the timeline of Clan Wolf, from founding to the current era and just vent about all the terrible story telling around clan wolf.
Yes please!
No. I only added that bit at the end because it was funny. :P
@@BigRed40TECH We should mail you to Tex (so you can have a batchall about Clan Mary Sue).... COD, of course. Maybe he can teach you about that Space Station game he plays, too?
@@tehpw7574 I don't have time for Space Stations :P
Nice self censoring there.... ;) Wouldn't want Clan Plot Armor to come calling.
You mention this "word of Blake", is this some Capellan or Kuritan way of refering to comstar? Man, im glad they haven't been destroyed by terrible writers for the sake of "sHaKiNg ThIngS uP" or anything stupid like that! Anyway, it sure is nice living in the Lyran Commonwealth, where we haven't been ignored/fucked over because dark age writers were too busy sucking off Alaric Wolf to pay attention to the factions anyone cares about :D
Don't blame the writers for the Word of Blake Charlie Foxtrot, blame Weismann for doing a lazy plot reset so MechClix could have a 'fresh start'.
Idiot clanners, mount 4 or more clan ER Medium lasers and at least 1 Clan ER Large laser. Basically start with the weapons fit of the Phoenix Hawk and add weapons as pod space allows.
Did anakin pilot this mech?
Like if you got the joke
Donegal, is Irish, so it pronounced differently than Done Gal, it 'do nuh gawl'
