Original Song:
• Dulce Pontes-Canção do...
Should be noted that fado is intangible heritage of humanity...and also exclusively portuguese.. it's a style indeed, but only in Portugal
Fado isn't only about sailors... It's about 'longing', about hard and rough ways of living. It's about love and misadventures
There are 140 types of fado. There is sad fado and happy fado, slow fado and fast fado. It's not a single emotion or just "saudade".
It's about missing... life, love, home, self.
Yea bit like saudades
Ó mar salgado, quanto do teu sal
São lágrimas de Portugal!
Por te cruzarmos, quantas mães choraram,
Quantos filhos em vão rezaram!
Quantas noivas ficaram por casar
Para que fosses nosso, ó mar!
"Fernando Pessoa"
In IEnglish:
O salty sea, how much of your salt
They are tears from Portugal!
For crossing you, how many mothers cried,
How many children prayed in vain!
How many brides were left to marry
That you should be ours, oh sea!
"Fernando Pessoa"
❤🇵🇹
🫶👏👏👏👏👏
Better translation:
Oh salty sea, how much of your salt
Is Portugal's tears!
To cross you, how many mothers wept,
How many sons prayed in vain!
How many brides remained unwed
So that you could be ours, oh sea!
?
@@RybzA lot better, thanks
Rosalie you really need to check out Dulce singing LIVE. She’s a vocal beast, and the way she plays with her vocals live is stunning.
She also need to check that Dulce was born in 1969 .. No way She song for a French movie in 1955
@@varadero53376:26
Fado is exclusively Portuguese. I also recommend the fado singer Mariza with her fado "Gente da minha Terra".
This musical style has nothing to do with Brazil.
And the best thing is that Dulce Pontes is actually this good, her voice isn't faked or computer assisted or any nonsense. Amazing singer.
I'm a Portuguese immigrant in France and this are the things that melt my heart ❤❤ being Portuguese my heritage my culture makes me a blessed person.
O fado é a musica da alma da cultura de Portugal e é patrimonio mundial.
a dulce pontes arrepia-me no bom sentido, q voz do caraças
Pudera, depois do Salazar usar como arma para manter os patas rapadas quietinhos.
For some reason Maestro Morricone worked with Dulce. Voz sublime.
Dulce Pontes es la diva de Portugal..❤💚💚
si te gusta la "saudade" portuguesa, te sugiero a Madredeus con Teresa Salgueiro.
Ahhh Madredeus... 🥰
I listened to "Canção do Mar" for the first time in 1995 when I was 15 years old. It was part of the soundtrack of a Brazilian soap opera called As Pupilas do Senhor Reitor, based on the novel with the same title written by the Portuguese writer Júlio Dinis. That song alongside with the soap opera and the novel I read at the same time made me feel I was part of the Portuguese culture, that I was part of Portugal. Since then, all my desire and love to this nation that "gave more worlds to the World" , in Camões' words in Os Lusíadas (a book I also read at that time for the first time), started growing and growing in my heart. It was a feeling of belonging to that culture. Rosalie, I totally agree about the way you pointed out some aspects in that song, like the vocalization, that gives us an impression about a syren's voice that is calling us, the imitation of the legends of the sea, the song sung by the sea, calling us in its misteries, the same misteries that made Portugal discover new worlds. God bless Portugal!

A cantora portuguesa Dulce Pontes é extraordinária. Tem uma voz lindíssima.
This song gave me goosebumps, what pipes and greatness she has.The greatest female vocalists I've heard.😱
Great singer. Not the best ever. The original singer of this song, Amália Rodrigues, was something that words can't even describe. It's without any doubt, any discution, the greatest singer ever from Portugal, one of the best singers of the world of all time. Unfortunatly, born more than 100 years ago, almost all his recordings are from later on his life. You can still listen how amazing She was, but when you listen to the handful songs that she record still at a Young age, you came really listen something that you never listen in your life. A voice so beautiful, so pure, so strong, that it doesn't even sound human. Not even supernatural!! It sound divine, not angels, but like a voice from God itself. It really was something you can't compare with nothing you ever eard in your life. There's no debate. Dulce Pontes is amazing, but no one can even be put on the same cathegory as Amália. She's on a different level, all by herself.
Fado.... Canta as saudade palavra única no português...fado tributo a todos navegadores, conquistadores por esses mares nunca dantes navegados... simplesmente lindo❤🙏😮
@@almahperditaeAmália was great but what you just stated is completely debatable… Dulce pontes is fenomenal as Mariza also, Teresa Salgueiro another one….
@@celsoalves7681 try to find early recordings from Amalia. Like I said in the post, almost all the recordings from Amalia are from when she was older, not from her peak. She only record very few songs when she was younger. At her peak, in those handful of songs, you can really see why she don't have rivals. You can't even compare her with the amazing singers that we have in Portugal. You can only compare her with very few singers worldwide. And there aren't many on that level. Just 3 or 4
Para mim, dulce e a melhor
The best portuguese singer of all time. When we talk about vocal technique there’s no one like dulce ❤
Yes there is: Teresa Salgueiro of Madredeus.
@@Drrr.Spinnen She's good but not that good. And I prefer to listen to Madredeus.
Mariza "Gente da minha terra" is very good too
@@ahhpeixepeixepeixe Teresa salgueiro from the time of Madredeus, yes.
Not the almost irrecognizable Teresa Salgueiro of nowadays that, unfortunately, went to sing and live in Brasil.
That is still alive , was born in 1969 , So no way she song in 1955 for a french movie
This music is part of the soundtrack movie "Primal fear" with Richard Gere.
Ennio Morricone, one of the greatest movies' composers, invited her to sing with an Orchestra.
Really mesmerizing.
Quando ouço esta canção não consigo parar de me arrepiar. É um verdadeiro espectáculo.
The original was a fado, but this version is not really a Fado, at least in the traditional sense. The live version is extraordinary. This version was in the movie Primal Fear.
It's a fado with orchestra, right?
Thar is called Fado Canção! @@manuelconceicao9259
fado has only guitars, the original version one its sang by Amália Rodrigues, th Queen of portuguese Fado.@@manuelconceicao9259
@@manuelconceicao9259, no.
@@manuelconceicao9259is folk música, not fado with or without orchestra
She sings like this live, she is that good. Haunting sounds of the Fado.
Probably many don’t know that Richard gere choose this music to play it in the moovie Primal Fear, and is so special to hear it, there’s a special scene with him just enjoying the music
This song appeared also in the movie Primal Fear in 1996 with Richard Gere and Edward Norton.
O Mare e tu de Andrea Bocelli e de Dulce Pontes. Another beautiful Song.
This song is 100% better live. You can really feel the emotion associated of this side of portuguese culture in her singing. I highly advise it because the studio recording really doesn't transmit her prowess.
Su voz es cálida, es preciosa
Gracias Dulce ❤
Desde Sevilla
Dulce Pontes is a real life music DIVA!!!
Love to see this reactions from people outside my country. Make me feel proud . She is an incredible singer and have a strong voice. we never listen much from her in the last years, sadly. She is very underestimated. People only want to listen crap music nowadays. That music is almost a national anthem for us.
As a Portuguese, thank you so much for this reaction 🙂
Choro cada vez que ouço esta musica lembro minha infância. Portugal
Maravilhosa Dulce Pontes 👏👏👏
Dulce Pontes is a great Portuguese singer. Fado is a Portuguese soulful way of singing. Dulce Pontes sings from her soul. As a Portuguese I believe this song is one of the most beautiful ones we have.
Fado is one of our beautiful heritages ❤️ and small correction Portugal is the only country where Fado was singed, no other country has this music style. It carries the weight of our ancestors, mothers longing for their sons and husbands, man lost to the sea… and every portuguese person carries Fado within them
O Amor A Portugal
Dulce Pontes
O dia há de nascer
Rasgar a escuridão
Fazer o sonho amanhecer
Ao som da canção
E então
O amor há de vencer
A alma libertar
Mil fogos ardem sem se ver
Na luz do nosso olhar
Na luz do nosso olhar
Um dia há de se ouvir
O cântico final
Porque afinal falta cumprir
O amor a Portugal
O amor a Portugal!
Dulce Pontes is a diva... The best female voice
Thankx Rosalie
lol that´s too much
Olá, tem de ouvir a Dulce Pontes cantar músicas lindíssimas e dirigida pelo grande Maestro Ennio Morricone.
Essa musica é eterna.
Dulce Pontes is a Portugal's diamond! She is one of the best singers worldwide from all times ❤
As a portuguese myself that song really hits home. FADO is a beautiful style of music we have in Portugal..and it may be old...but it will never go out of style...it lies within the heart of the portuguese.
If you want to react to some more FADO songs..and also see how diversified it can be you can react to:
- Oh gente da minha terra by Mariza
- Uma casa portuguesa by Amália Rodrigues
- Lisboa menina e moça by Carlos do Carmo
- Lusitana paixão by Dulce Pontes
Theres a ton of songs you could react to 😛 Btw Amália was a pioneer when it came to FADO so it's normal that you see a lot of her songs sang by other people. Hope you like more portuguese music ;)
I am Portuguese and I love this song. To see how this song became international, there is a version sung by two Russians ladies at a TV contest that I appreciate a lot
Maravilhosoa❤👍
This beautiful song features on the movie "Primal Fear" (1996) with Richard Gere. The song appears in one of the scenes (Richard Gear character even refers to this song that is playing on a bar) and also apears in the final credits.
im portuguese and im just 33 yo but this music makes me cry because it reminds me times that will never come back. as poor we could be.. we were happy and free anyway
This song featured in an Hollywood movie staring Richard Gere
This was all over the radio and TV back in the 90's. Dulce Pontes was part of the movement that recuperated fado as a national music genre after it was kind of ostracised after the revolution because of the former regime affiliations. Plus, she had a freakingly virtuous voice.
Rosalie, tu devrais écouter la chanteuse Mariza et en particulier " quem me dera " . Elle est extraordinaire !
Im in Mozambique and I love Dulce Pontes and the portuguese music😍
This is why I love UA-cam. How cool is this, that we have music from a small country as mine, being listened and analyze by someone from abroad. So cool! Thanks for doing this
A minha a nossa Querida Dulce Pontes voz incrível de Portugal meu País.
Veja tbm a nossa Marisa que cantou para o papa agora em Agosto em Portugal.❤big kiss
Just beautiful, this song always makes me cry because it is so touching and incredibly sung. I heared this song when i watched the movie Primal Fear in my twenties and was so mesmerized by this song. I looked it up and since then I was hooked on Fado. I started to listen to many more Fado artists and till this day (in my 50's now) it is one of my favourite musical genres.
Orgulho português.
I used to listen Radio Amalia while studying and i immediately felt in love with fado. I can remember the very first time i listen to this song, it was like a déjà vu, as if i already knew what the next word would be and how similar to the cirque du soleil- alegría álbum it was. Portugal has given the world one of the best music genre. Im Dominican btw.
one of the best voices from Portugal, try Madre Deus next time, also fado, a beutifull voice, so unique!
First lady to sing this song was Amalia Rodrigues a long long time ago, this song was also on the movie primal fear
Adorei lindo lindo. wauuuu Doce pontes ❤❤❤❤❤
Magnifique chanson portugaise et magnifique le clip !!!
Bravo!👍😇🙏
I love is that. Amazing Cantora.
I love your reaction to this song. I'm new to the channel. I LOVED your insight. Thank you for reacting to this amazing singer from my country and the Portuguese style of music. Abraço de Portugal
Welcome to the channel and community :) I am glad you enjoyed the review and am honored you're here.
This song is absolutely beautiful! Her voice is just beautiful! I heard it for the first time about a year ago in a movie called "Primal Fear". I fell in love with the song!
Woooffft amazing voice . Super Super
She is the BEST FEMALE singer ever from Portugal! I met her many years ago when she came to Toronto…her singing will bring you to tears.. I also saw Amelia Rodrigues when she came to Toronto years ago as well. No one in my opinion can come near her!!! Love love her! Please listen to her albums, you won’t be disappointed!
Hello Rosalie, good that you corrected yourself in the middle about this song being part of the 1955 movie. That one was in fact the original from our queen Amalia Rodrigues. But fun fact is that this new version / rendition was also in a movie, this one in the 1996 movie „Primal Fear” with Richard Gere, who requested it, and Edward Norton!
I was a young man living in Coimbra when this song came out, it's always been part of the soundtrack of my life so to speak. As it has a for many portuguese, it's a very true representation of "old" Portugal, the people battered by the loss of so many lives, to the sea and later to the colonial wars. So it speaks to us of our collective past. A true volksgeist song, so to say.
There is much to listen to in portuguese music, for such a small country there is quite a strong musical representation. Beyond Fado into contemporary music. But staying in the same veign as this song I would listen to Mariza singing Cavaleiro Monge, from a poem by Fernando Pessoa, live in "Concerto em Lisboa": ua-cam.com/video/Sr5GOQiF7A4/v-deo.html
colonial wars?? 300 hundred died in those wars in the 20th century...
As a Portuguese man, born in 1984, this song was originally WAY BEYOND me when I was a 9y old boy, but I remember it vaguely as my parents and other older folks in my family and acquaintances had such reverence to it. Back then, the internet was not a thing, and I was just starting out learning English... Over the years after, it's so amazing that I grew up into the song and also English exploded in my life and I could explore so many different things on the internet. Also, with UA-cam I started to recognize even people from other countries were gradually appreciative of this song. The same way I found out about music and songs from other countries and cultures, it's amazing to see the same happening to a song from my native country. Cheers for open cultural exchange!! Thanks for doing this video.
I too am a 1984 baby Portuguese born in south Africa, and remember my parents and other older folk playing this and other great songs on LP, damn those were amazing times loud music hot summer and kids playing like kids, no internet, no phones, no tv , just outside day and night playing games with other kids.
Faial Açores. 1979. Canadá 1988… hello friends.
That vibrato touch your Anglo Saxonic soul, now you are Lusitanic.
Along with Mariza, one of the best ever female vocalists, period.
Glady to see that the world is discovering life outside USA and GB. I have been enjoying Dulce Pontes music for decades now. Keep exploring world music play list carefully bcz is adctive. Once upon time, Portugal and Spain were ruled by arabs/musilms that left a lot of traces of their culture and architecture over there.
Great reaction and coments.
Peace and love.
Simplesmente magnífica ❤
It's very kind of you to be interested by our culture, our music ...
Esta canción es también de la peícula estadounidense "Primal Fear".
She's amazing ❤ the best you must see alive She's better
My Portugal 🇵🇹
Obrigada.
Beautiful analysis and a wonderful homage to a very iconic song for the Portuguese.
Hi, Rosaly! Greetings from Russia😃
It will be interesting to see your reaction to this song cover by Pelageya and Elvira Kalimullina. It's amasing one and you will love it.
Divina ... Fantástica . bella . GRACIAS ROSALIE , 🤩
It was from a movie with richard gere. Kiss from portugal.❤
Love her and have seen her live in Portugal
I also really like Dulce Pontes' voice and it's not because she's Portuguese. It's one of the best voices I've heard to date that I could put in a group of five people due to its timbral peculiarity, vocal plasticity, emotional sound and that truth in what we produce.
One of the voices that I can say didn't want to participate in the Miss World contest, or the glamor of fame, because that's not what being an artist is.
The artist, the artisan, the craftsman are good at what they do and do not seek in fame the fairy illusion of the meaning of life, without effort other than being themselves.
Like Maro or Salvador Sobral ... well maybe more than five in the top singers, pehaps 50 or 500 or 5000 ...
For more fado you should check Mariza "oh gente da minha terra" live in Lisbon. You Will be amazed.
I love fado.. and especially this piece.. greetings from germany
You must see Dulce Pontes Live ❤

I'm following your channel since your first reaction to NF. I don't comment much, but i see all your reactions. They are amazing, honest and so emotional. Dulce Pontes it's an incredible singer with such a powerfull voice. Keep grindin and a big hug 🫂

some live versions of that music are even better with her facial. expressions and body posture.
Grande Dulce Pontes!
Este vídeo é muito antigo. Sugiro que aprecie a mesma canção, mais recente e cantada ao vivo : Dulce Pontes live at Herodes Atticus Athens.
Yes!! That is also a masterpiece!!!

You must check the actual fado queen Marisa in particular the 'Gente da minha terra' live concert in Lisbon.
Yes! Mariza is the best..❤❤love from Italy ❤
@@maddalenacherchi, Dulce Pontes is a few levels above Mariza. I'm Portuguese
@@luka583I totally agree!
Cada um qualifica conforme o seu gosto. Vozes diferentes. Mariza não tem capacidade vocal para igualar uma voz lírica com a da Dulce, ao passo que esta consegue ter o mesmo tom da Mariza. Simples.

Heres the translation...
I went dancing on my boat
Beyond the cruel sea
And the sea roars
Say I went to steal
The unparalleled light
From your look so beautiful
Come and find out if the sea will be right
Come here and watch my heart dance
If I dance on my boat
I'm not going to the cruel sea
And I don't even tell you where I went to sing
Smile, dance, live, dream with you
Come and find out if the sea will be right
Come here and watch my heart dance
If I dance on my boat
