- Will it run? Me & the guys get the 71 Datsun into the shop with the help of the kabota of course. It’s a 1971 Datsun 1600. We don’t know the last time it ran. Lets see if we can rescue it.

An engine I knew very well I had a Datsun 510 lowered like the racing cars they were. In high school auto shop class, I put big weber carbs on this engine, and it would haul ass. Also had wide tires with racing fenders. Brings back memories.
Hopefully we will get back on this one soon

Wish I could have found one of these when I lived in Murfreesboro Tennessee back in the middle 80's.
Had 78 and 76 both 620s four both ran good for my first work trucks maybe in my 20 year old paid 400 at car lot had for years but u don't see these anymore what happen to good times

I had a green 71 Datsun with a 1600 motor too back in 78/79 mine had a white top on it.. sold-it and brought a 1500 chevy..

if you want to make a project of it, I have an '81 210 wagon overhauled less than 25k ago with the nice rare little 5 speed. front disc brakes, cyclone/turbo wider offset mags (being 4 lug isn't any real problem at all). it's an A-14 block with A-15 top end. its not gutless and gave 34-35 mpg. perfect stuff if you want truck low for handling.

I had a '77 King Cab. Loved that truck. Rust was its Achilles' Heel.

also check the timing chain........it has timing marks and 3 cam cogs to set timing at.
Tell ya what I would do with this little girl. First thing, flush out the radiator and put anti freeze mixed with water in it after completely flushing out the old and getting ready for the new. Change the plugs, plug wires distributer cap, rotor, points and condenser and a new cap, and a new coil. Change the oil and oil filter and gasoline filter. After she's up and running like a little honey bee, start sanding the truck down and priming it with primer, at least two good coats to keep the body from rusting any more to a further degree. I would go underneath the truck itself and spray paint with my compressor black rust olem paint the chassis and frame and the underside of the bed. If the floor boards aren't bad, paint them to. Once all of this is completed get the regular stock wheels on her with Dog dish hubcaps and after getting a nice enamel color paint, sand the body back down washed her real good and get her ready to paint the whole truck. Lastly, two gallons of black rust olem bed liner paint will go into the bed to protect the bed from rust damage. I wish I could have gotten one of these little girls when I was living in Murfreesboro Tennessee, I love the 521 series Datsun/Nissan trucks! Wish they would start manufacture them again, bet they would be sold so fast they couldn't keep up with the demand of them, gasoline is up to 5,6, and 7 dollars a gallon these days.
Coil and points are new now, everything else mentioned is on the list of things to do, except paint. We are keeping the patina. The truck has the original dealership logo on the tailgate from 71 that was our local Datsun dealer. Not trying to do a full resto on it. Thanks for watching

I understand. I'm 64 and have 2 521's. The most I ever paid for a rig is for my 1st 521 at $1500 in 1978. They are very reliable. Been cross country in them even living in Alaska with no issues. The L16 carried all my belongings up/down the Alcan hwy. Currently having an L20b being rebuilt 20 over with closed chamber head with and rv cam.

@@Outlandish_Family I'd scrap them and put what suppose to be put on this truck that it Original came with. Not a fan of wagon wheels and thin tires, they ruin the looks of ANYTHING they are put on.

Toss in an L20b with a 5 speed in there! That truck has a 411 ratio rear end in it. Will Majorly rip!

@@Outlandish_Family I had a 1969 datsun truck. Dad blew up the 1.3L then put in the 1.6L 1969 early ones came with the weak 1.3L. 1969 1/2 came with 1.6L. Stock 1.6L compression is 181 psi when new. Timing chain can be checked by removing valve cover. There is a notch and a v that is in manuals as to how to align them or read the alignment for timing chain stretch. Early trucks pre 1969 1/2 had a 456 ratio rear end. When the trucks got the 1.6L, rear end gears upgraded to 411? or 412?

I have 2-71 Datsun 521's -one I've had for almost 45 yrs while the other 27 yrs. Lived in Alaska traveled cross.country hauling all my possessions years ago never giving me any problems. Cheap, durable and extremely reliable transportation.
I've rebuilt more L series motors than I want to remember over the past 4 decades.
We have no idea how long this one had sat up, but to our surprise it still has some life left in it. Thanks for watching
@@Outlandish_Family same here worked on L series for years. L16 all the way up to L20b parts are swappable. L20b camshaft will fit in L16! Ask me how I know.

@@tloumashamaite9847 NO the j13 transmission is different. Im not even sure if people have done it with an adapter plate. I never really got to see the J13 engine and trans that came out of dads early 1969 521 truck. I just knew the bellhousings were different.
