    I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

    Haha, I didn't realize I'd been watching your channel for over two years now, Steve. Time flies. But I remember watching the video when you discovered the cub got munched. Congrats on the resurrection of an old friend.
    My friend installed VGs on his 185 for back country flying, he said they're great. They reduced his speed a bit at slow flight, but he said the great thing is the added aileron authority at the slower speeds.

      Having worked as a Buyer for the AOG/Spare Parts Procurement at DeHavilland/Bombardier, the contract was, as long as there were five of a certain aircraft still flying anywhere in the world, they would have the availability of the parts for Operators....Don't know if that applies to other manufacturers, but back then (I've been semi-retired since 2002).......It's great to know how to do your own repairs.

    A friend and I used to have from five to eight Super Cubs towing gliders every day at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Also leased a few more to various glider operations so maintenance was a continuous task. I have about 6000 hours logged in Super Cubs and no telling how much more that never made it into the books. Most of our cubs were fitted with the 180hp O-360 engines. We bought a number of tired and damaged Cubs and rebuilt them.

    You're so much more relaxed flying this aircraft, Steve. You can tell by the way you hold the controls, a sure sign of the concentration levels. Compare this vid with the others, especially your first flights in this particular plane. Had the opportunity to fly C310s with and without the VG kit, what a difference! Definitely improved handling and performance, but does that then deminish a certain character - depends on the pilot I guess... Keep on posting.

  • @billroberts9182
    @billroberts9182 3 роки тому

    I've flown my PA-18 21 years. Best mod = Boher Prop. 2nd = bushwheels. 3rd = micro VGs. 4th = Steve's Vented Brakes.
    The VG's surprisingly do not slow down your cruise and essentially weigh nothing. It essentially eliminates nose drop in power off stalls, and I've never run out of elevator control. High angle of attack maneuvers at altitude, with cruise or full power will shock you- it can maintain much greater than 17 degrees relative to the horizon. I don't think VG's allow you to "fly slower", but they do allow you to fly closer to stall speed with confidence. With considerable power you can slow down a little bit more, but your nose is so high it is impracticable to use,in a short field landing, in my opinion. The vented brakes gives me powerful control and are trouble free. They were a significant improvement in my plane. Your cub looks beautiful! Congrats.

    Super Cubs are almost always worth rebuilding!
    VGs no or go? That's a tough one really.
    All I know is what I've experienced. I flew a J3 prior to VGs, then after VGs and while the numbers weren't drastically different, it did "Feel" more stable in power off and power on stalls, it seemed to feel more stable in steep turns as well but that may a false sense of added stability (not my J3 BTW).
    I would vote yes for adding VGs but that's just me, I'm not the one paying for it or the one that may live to regret it even though I can't imagine going wrong with VGs, meaning it can't hurt, it just may not prove to be a drastic improvement.
    In my opinion, just a couple of knots slower stall and even a slight amount of added stability is worth it!! It could actually save a life at some point!!
    Great to see this bird in such great shape and hats off to all those who put so much work and pride into the restoration!!

    A shame I only have one Like.
    The plane with a special place in my heart is Piper Cherokee C-FKKF. First flight, first solo, the bulk of my flight training. A hard decision on my flight test when she failed run-up, but respect from the examiner for making the call. A crusty old bird with a ridiculous number of hours in the log (over 15,000), but she'll get you there, and home, every time.

    Best way of measuring the performance difference, if you can't do a proper scientific measurement, is to get several people to do several flights each, both before and after you put the VGs on, but *don't tell them* when you do it. In fact, don't even mention the VGs, just have them rate the performance of the aircraft after every flight. That will eliminate any psychological factors, and give you a much better understanding of the true performance difference.

  • @sbukosky
    @sbukosky 4 роки тому

    I have a fair amount of time in a PA-12 with a 150 Lycoming. Must be very similar. I never flew a Super Cub but maybe the only difference is the width for the rear seat. I found very different stall characteristics depending on weight and how the horizontal stabilizer was trimmed. That said, beautiful job done by the guys. Keep them flying!

    As to VGs, we did that mod on our 7GCBC Citabria about 15 years ago. It changed the low speed handling massively. Stall dropped by 8mph, though cruise speed dropped by 4; It retains full aileron control into a stall now; It's very hard to get into a spin, but once in, it likes to stay in, and we can touch the tailwheel with the mains still 3 to 4 feet in the air.

    • @BigWowDice
      @BigWowDice 6 років тому

      flyingfiddler you bring up some of the same reasons we are resisting the mod. FKO currently has a decent cruise speed and I prefer to touch with main vs tail. The mains are designed for bigger impacts. Thank you for the feedback.

    This being 2018 and all, I'd go with vortex alternators instead. jus' sayin' All kidding aside, the plane looks beautiful again, Dennis and co. did a fantastic job. Not a pilot, but I hitched a ride in a Stearman recently on Long Island. Great fun, love your channel. Thanks fer takin' us along...

    Vgs will make a difference with slow flight. Not only will it help lower that stall speed allow for a steeper angle of attack, but also improve aileron response at slower speeds.
    Another really cool mod that would drastically improve slow flight, is the Alaska airframes flaps mod. Then you’ll have to go with bigger tires to help combat the tail first...

    Good to see the Super Cub back in the air! I think VG’s would be awesome on it, along with some big tires. It seemed the Dynon wasn’t operating on your flight. Was there an issue with it?

    Hope I didn't freak you out too much at OSH yesterday. For some reason I thought you like the Torono Raptors...lol Have a good time!

    Absolutely on the VG's... The wing design of the cub will do very well with VG's installed, you should be able to drop the stall speed by 10mph easily.

    There are a lot other things I would do before VGs if it were an experimental. Since you are locked into archaic certified rules, then VGs are probably a good way to go.
