I bought the new edition from Matagot yesterday and this playthrough was exactly what I was looking for ! I can't wait to play my first game, thanks guys.
Hi Nicolas, I'm sure you will have a lot of fun playing Race for the Galaxy. The icons are a bit difficult at the start to get your head around but after a couple of games they all make a lot of sense. We're glad you enjoyed the playthough. Please let us know what you think after you play it!
I watched this video last night & didn't get a chance to comment until now. First off, great job (as usual), w/ a minimum of fanfare & hoopla, you guys just get to the point & play....I like that! Personally, I find it very difficult to wrap my head around the produce, consume, & trade powers in this game. It seems very difficult for me to understand & use the powers optimally. Usually I just grab a bunch of cards w/ large victory points & try to be the first to play twelve cards. I'm sure I don't play the game very well but I do enjoy it & find if fun despite being clueless about how to use synergy & do things wisely. I suppose that comes w/ time? Also it probably helps to read a rulebook every once in awhile but that is a discussion for another day lol. FYI the digital edition is pretty good, I find games like this (for me) are worthwhile considering in the digital edition where the constant dealing & handling of cards can be cumbersome. Also the app helps in tracking what you & others have, scoring, etc. So a thumbs up for the app for those that might be interested.
Andrew, thanks a lot for your comment. The Produce, Consume - Trade powers are great for getting the cards that you need to pay for the other ones with large victory points. You kind of have to plan a step ahead, because the Produce phase comes after Consume. If you can get a world or development that produces green or yellow goods especially, then in the next round the Consume - Trade power can give you lots of cards and pay for those high-cost, high-point cards. Finding synergy between your cards really helps your engine generate cards and points. In this game, I was able to produce a number of different types of goods, so playing the Diversified Economy allowed me to take advantage of this and coupled with the Consume 2xVP action doubled the points I was able to get for it. Also, playing cards like Interstellar Bank and Public Works to give you cards back when you develop can help maximise the benefits you get when taking actions. After a few plays I am sure that you will start to see cards/types of cards that work well together. Agreed on the app - it does make things nice and easy and is nice when you want to play the game solo. I do like the feel of real cards though when there is someone up for a game!
Nice Playthrough. Very explanatory. I especially liked that you showed the played cards. Hieronymus in the comment section notified you already about the rule mistakes he caught. I think I found another one. The consume-power of Tourist world has to be used as follows: Trade 2 goods -> Get 3 victory points
Hi Philip. We're delighted you enjoyed the playthrough. Thanks also for letting us know about the error. I have made a note the Klingon subtitles. When pointing out errors, could I please ask you to give a time code so that it is easier for us to see where you are talking about? Cheers!
Hi Great job and nice video! Just one thing: From 6:21 Pat, you placed "Mining robots". It allows discount, but ONLY FOR BROWN planets. And I think, you've applied it to every next planet - I guess that's a mistake
Hi Lord Vader, Oh wow... you are absolutely correct. I missed that completely. That was indeed a mistake. Thank you for letting us know. I hope you still enjoyed the video!
Another great video! I really love watching your playthroughs. I have a question. At 5:11, why did you take 8 cards and keep 2 instead of taking 10 cards and keeping 3 cards?
Hi Nick! Thanks a lot for watching our videos. It's really nice to hear that you like watching them. As regards your question, the rulebook specifically says that in a 2-player game (for experienced players), a player selecting both Explore bonuses draws eight cards and keeps two of them (plus the effects of any applicable powers). That is why we played this way, though I do see that it seems to make sense to draw 10 and keep 3. Cheers!
I just got this game and I’m looking forward to my first play through. I do have a question. Early on, both explore cards were played by each of you. You drew 8 cards and kept 2. Why wasn’t it 10 cards and keep 2? Including bonuses I count 7 for the first explore card, and 3 for the other explore card, keeping 2.
Hi Rodney. Nice that you got your hands on Race for the Galaxy. It is a pretty cool game with a lot going on. You are absolutely correct and we made a mistake there. I should have drawn 10 cards, and actually I should have kept 3. The basic explore action allows you to draw 2 and keep 1. One of the Explore cards allows you to draw an extra 5, but still only keep 1, and the other allows you to draw 1 extra card and keep 1 extra card for a total of 2 to keep from that action. That is a grand total of 10 drawn and 3 kept. Thanks for letting us know. I will make a note in the Klingon subtitles. Hope you enjoy the game!
Thanks Bernard! The digital version is well designed for sure. The music and sound effects really add to the atmosphere too. The AI can be difficult to beat too!
I saw this game digitally a while back, but at the time I tried it, I couldn't make sense of the icons on the cards. But, thanks to this video, it cleared up what some of the cards do (and some of the rules mentioned in the rulebook). Thanks for the video. Also to ask, there's 2 games that I heard of that I though I would share: 1. Dune: Imperium 2. Clank: A deck-building game 3. Hero Realms (Star Realms sister game, made by the same people) 4. Cubitos Have you heard of either of these games, and if so, could they be possible ideas for future gameplay videos?

Hi Daniel, Yes, the icons on the cards can be very confusing at first, but when you play the game a couple of times they start to make sense. We delighted that our video helped you to understand a bit better. Please be aware that there is a mistake in there - I (Pat) was getting a discount from my Mining Robots cards every time I settled a planet. However, the bonus was a BROWN circle with a -1, so that should have meant that I only got the discount when settling brown planets. Please feel free to ask if you have any other questions about the rules. As for the other games, we have not played any of them, but Dune: Imperium and Clank have been on my radar for a while. Hero Realms sounds great - I really like Star Realms, and the fantasy theme would really work for me. Cubitos is a game I have not heard of. Thank you for the suggestions. Great playthru again. Im finding consume 'trade' unclear as to when to activate the $ row actions. At 11.50 when Glai activates her trade $ sell should glai have added +2 extra cards to her 4 from selling the green produce considering Glai had the star nomad raiders card considering this card has a $ action? And at 19.10 ish did Glai forget to consume her 1 product card after Pat consumed his cards?
Hi Troy. Thank you - we are delighted you enjoyed the playthrough. You are absolutely correct about the Consume Trade $. Glai forgot to add the +2 cards for her Star Nomad Raiders card when she traded her Green good for 4 cards around the 13:50 mark. You are also correct about the product card. After Pat consumed his cards, Glai should have also consumed the good that she had. Thanks a lot for pointing this out. I have added notes to the Klingon subtitles!
This game is incredibly confusing. First move, and already I don't understand why with the exploration cards, Glai draws three and keeps two, but Pat with same card down, only get to keep 2. Why doesn't Pat get to keep 3? (1/5) + (2/3). I guess I am asking why Glai got the bonus. What determines that?
Hi there Michael. Yes, it is a bit confusing, especially when you are playing with 2 players and someone plays 2 Explore cards. So, the basic Explore action is to draw 2 cards; keep 1, discard the other. There are two possible Explore bonuses, depending on which Explore action card was chosen by a player. A player who chose Explore: +5 draws five more cards to select from before making their choice. They still only get to keep 1. It is just that they have more choice of what to keep. So this player explores by drawing 7 cards and chooses 1 of them to add to their hand. The other bonus is that a player who chose Explore: +1,+1 draws one more card to select from and keeps another card. Such a player explores by drawing 3 cards and choosing 2 of them to add to their hand. In the 2-player version, the rules state that "A player selecting both Explore bonuses draws eight cards and keeps two of them." So, because I (Pat) played both Explore cards, I got to draw 8 cards and kept 2 of them, and Glai just did the Explore: +1,+1 action, so she drew 3 and kept 2. Hope this helps!

Hi Efrain. There is of course an element of luck in this game, but I would not say that it is decided on pure luck. There are ways to get to have a lot of cards in your hand, such as the Explore +5 option, or just by using the Consume Trade option to generate a lot of cards. The skill is in seeing the combos in the cards that you have, and in knowing what cards to keep and which ones to discard to pay for them.
