I think if you've play Yakuza 0 then Kiwami is a no brainer anyway. You probably already like the characters, the city, the goofy side stories and also the main story.
I am so glad I discovered this series now. I bought Yakuza 0 on a whim and it became one of my fav games of the decade. I’m starting this and I also have Kiwami 2. Please keep bringing Yakuza games to the PC Sega this franchise is too good to keep in Japan and on the consoles!
Was going to write a long post, but just have this to say: As a remake of the first game for 30 dollars its a great value, with added story and improved graphics, for those who have played the original and newcomers to the series, and as a "expansion of Yakuza Zero" it is worth a play-through.
So excited for this. Played 0 after Huber and Ben sung its praises and I adored the game. I'm glad they brought this out so close to the release of 0, I need to play more of this series.
Good review, Ben! I appreciate your ever present candor. Also, nice editing Don!
i've seen and heard of this series before but...still....the graphics and areas you visit are beautiful....
nice review
Awesome review guys!!! Thanks for the info...
Umm 1:27-1:40 is quite the spoiler for those who never played the original smh.
Yeah agreed, especially considering how they tend to avoid spoilers themselves and are often pretty vocal about it. Oh well, still worth of picking up in my opinion. Might just have to skip EZA reviews when it comes to story based games till after I played said games.
MW me too, I'm still picking it up. I've only played 0 and loved the story. And yeah EZA should at least put "may contain story spoilers" in the beginning part of the video
Not really, it's something you figure out relatively early on that Nishiki isn't the same person he was, especially in Yakuza 1 on PS2 with its very brief opening.
mementoa That it happened in the beginning does make it sting a bit less, but it still stings. If The Last of Us beginning would be spoiled in a review and said to be just the beginning and a setup for the rest of the game, I'd be really bummed.
Again, I simply shouldn't have watched the review yet.
Thanks man, you saved me there
good review havn't beaten zero yet but when I do I will be getting this for sure
Goddaaaaamn, we got some spoilers here if you haven't played anything outside of Yakuza 0. If you're set on getting this after playing 0 I'd say skip this review.
Richard Ilie Other than the review talking about the general setup, I'm not sure where this is coming from. Everything mentioned is from the very beginning of the game.
Ben Moore
That's fair. I think it just feels like it reveals a bit too much since Yakuza 0 seemed pretty intent on not revealing too much about the "event" that puts Kiryu behind bars. And although Yakuza 0 alluded to this idea that Nishikiyama would take a darker route, I guess it was kinda surprising to see that confirmed as well as him being in a place of power within the Dojima family.
Overall it's nothing too big in what I imagine is the totality of what the story will tell. I think watching a review for a game I knew I'd buy was just a bad move on my part, haha. Less a criticism of the review and more a reminder to those who already know they're in on the game after finishing 0.
Pretty much. It's not a huge deal I guess, but a general setup that's right at the beginning can still be a huge spoiler, which this is the perfect example of (especially having only played Yakuza 0). Now I got to experience Nishiki turning heel for the first time from a review instead of enjoying it through the games story telling.
But yeah, like you said, shouldn't have watched this review yet until after playing the game, knowing I'd buy it anyway. Your comment should be on the top for stupid people like me xD
MW
We both dun goofed, lol.
Thank you
The Dragon of Iowa! Thank you for this review!
Children, sit down, I'll tell you the story of a Dragon and a Mad Dog
Great review, Ben!
Apparently Yakuza Kiwami is going to be a free game in November's PS Plus line up! Can't wait to get back into the franchise after finishing Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 6! Loving this franchise.
Great video review.
Kiwami 2 please.
It just got announced today. :)
I am a prophet and I should be acknowledged as such from here forward, thank you very much
I hope you see Kiwami 3, 4 and 5 in the future :)
Well SEGA had said few years ago that they are intrested to
remake/remaster Yakuza 2-5 (at least) for PS4, and maybe that
announcement will happen in their upcoming: "new titles announcement
event" for the series on August 26 : www.siliconera.com/2017/08/21/yakuzas-new-titles-announcement-event-will-available-viewing-live-stream/
also the yakuza 2 remake wasn't announced yet, it was just a leak: www.siliconera.com/2017/08/24/yakuza-kiwami-2-ps4-leaked-will-made-using-yakuza-6-engine/
If I remember an interview, they wanted to remake 2 and remaster the rest for PS4 so everyone can catch up to six
Majima is my favourite character in Yakuza 0 and his relationship with Makoto throughout the game was memorable. In Yakuza Kiwami, I have to fight him as a replacement for Mr.Shakedown? Son of a gun....
Quick question: If I have a Yakuza Zero save file (cleared the game), does anything carry over to Kiwami?
neuromod What are you talking about? This isn't some MMO.
You unlock some intems!
Will there be a Xcom 2: war of chosen review?
Hey Ben how long did you spend with the game?
Around 30 hours or so.
Not too shabby. Thanks :)
Can't wait for the yakuza 2 and 3 remakes!
Never played a Yakuza game before, is here or Yakuza 0 the best place to start?
murph2010
Personally, Zero is the best place to start
Cool, ty man :)
Out of interest - why wouldn't the very first game be the place to start?
Well Yakuza 0 is arguably the best in the series in gameplay and mechanics, plus Yakuza 0 is a prequel to the series so it also makes a great starting point for new comers as well.
Yakuza 0 takes place before Kiwami so it's the best place to start. Also Kiwami have some reference to 0 that you might not get if you start with Kiwami
How are people getting this game? i keep seeing reviews but its not out yet :[
figured, just kept seeing more and more reviews and i was look "OOOOOH boi its out!"
but nah im just a public pleb
Should I buy Zero or Kiwami?
Long time fan of the series here. Played Yakuza 1 and feel like it had the best story of the series, plus it's cheaper, but I did already play it before and I wonder how much it adds to the original experience. Zero is more expensive, sure, but it's also a brand new game I never played before.
Well, technically Zero has a lot more content than Kiwami, both have the same graphic, but the selling point for Zero is Majima. I will not spoil why, but in short I recommend Zero.
buy zero. when you done it you will realize you want kiwami so bad because you want MORE YAKUZA game in your life
0 first since it technically is the beginning of the Yakuza franchise, being a prequel of Yakuza 1.
TheBlackCloakedMan 0 is the best game in the entire series. A man who never played yakuza 0 is never a whole man.
Zero, no contest.
Imagine being mad about hearing a synopsis of the first few minutes of a game that's nearly 15 years old
😂😂😂
Looking forward to this. Sure the reviews are showing this is not on the same level as Zero, but there still very solid throughout and plus at $30 dollars at release, it's a solid deal especially for those that just got into the series (Thanks to 0) and want to play the game that started the series.
Enemies with guns constantly knocking you down? Then you know who you should be going after as a priority instead of letting them keep shooting you in the back.
Seriously wtf
I hope this will lead to Kiwami 2 I never got my hands in Yakuza 2
It just got announced today :)
I really want to get into the Yakuza franchise, right about now.
Matthew Cool You should.
Just pre ordered this today
2:53 "and while there are skills you can acquire to help in these situations"
OR YOU COULD JUST GO AFTER THE GUY WITH THE F'ING GUN :P
Nobody said Ben was good at video games. Have you seen him play monster hunter? It's hard to watch.
I know this voice, but from what channel? Is this guy on gamingbolt now?
PS4 really need all Yakuza 0-6 so we still need Kiwami 3, 4, 5 and then we're complete!
Sounds like a fantastic remake
With this remake; i can only imagine how the Shenmue 1& 2 HD remasters would look like. (Amazing of course)
C'mon Sega make it happen.
Shenmue Unofficial Sega ahould bring Shenmue 1 and 2 to PS4. Would help people like myself get up to date on the story before playing 3.
Melbester9
If Sega makes the Shenmue 1 & 2 HD remasters; they should release it on all platforms and that should also end up being the same for Shenmue 3.
Just because we're now on the 5-Star Rating System doesn't mean we aren't Swimming in 7's! :D
I really want to play this series but I'm not even sure where to start, what game to play, in what order
Play Yakuza 0 first then Yakuza Kiwami. Wait for Yakuza Kiwami 2 to release and play it, after that you play 3,4,5 and 6. :)
the jingu boss fight is the hardest boss fight i ever encountered from the series
Just picked up this series, why is combat so god damn trash??? Not even an hour in I'm over it already my god is awful.
WOOOO! Hell YEAH!
i really need to pick up zero sometime soon i here nothing but good things about it
it's worth every penny, even the mini games can be their own games
10/10 music in this franchise
best reviews on net
Why does he keep saying "Kawami"?
He's saying Kiwami?
accent
Your videos aren't 60fps! I thought this was a gaming channel
Thank you for your reply Daniel. It's a shame we didn't get to see the games beautiful 60 during this otherwise excellent review.
Dragon of Iowa >>> Dragon of Dojima.
I should have seen reviews before getting Kiwami. I'm not feeling it. Maybe I should have waited out a little.
me too, didn't care for it a bit
What was wrong with it??
@@Anomalous602 Main quest is all over the place and side missions are generic and bad. Massive downgrade coming from Yakuza Zero.
おらこもぇった I understand
BEN MOORE!
It drives me crazy that Ben calls Kiryu "Kazuma", since this was a mistake on the original games but since 4 I think been corrected on the subtitles, everyone calls him Kiryu not Kazuma, specially Mishima who always call him Kiryu-chan. It's a minor detail I know but I've noticed that the EAllies keep calling him the wrong name.
It's isnt the wrong name Kiryu is his first name. His full name is Kazama Kiryu.
MANY people refer to Kazama as Kazama in the wider fanbase as it's common in Japan to call people by there surname not there given name
His name is Kazuma, not Kazama
No his real name is kazuya kazama
manic221 what I meant is that we don't call Majima "Goro", or Nishki "Kira", specially when the game is calling the character Kyriu and the subtitles say "Kazuma". This was a known localization error that got solved, just look at the original Yakuza vs Zero for example.
I wish they bring back original English voice actors, I mean, C'mon, I know Y'all wanna hear Mark Hamill as Majima again.
nah. That just ruined it. Just like poor dubbed anime lol
No hostess club in this one? :'(
WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS SERVES AS A CONTINUATION TO ITS PREQUEL?!!
I love your vids guys but that whole sentence was just not necessary.
because Kiwami added stuff that correlates to 0.
You can't english?
Why so many spoilers Ben??? :/
Kazuma rises above all!
I feel like this review doesn't take into consideration that Yakuza 0 is a newly developed game created with much more experience now than what was there for the first. You based your entire review off of comparisons between the two as if Kiwami is the sequel to 0 when it really only is by number.
Ben-sama!
Damnnnn Ben comin down hard with the 3.5 up in here. Is this what it feels like to discipline your child?
I'm just holding out until they release the Dragon of Iowa DLC
this game is free right now PSN store Nov. 2018.
if you played the original on the PS2 do your self a favor and don't play this one
they took some buildings away in the city and added a little more story
the most glitchy yakuza game.. sometimes it feels like Kiryu has baby arms (cant hit anything)
and the ending omg your fighting 20 guys with guns and every time you get hit with a bullet it takes 30 seconds for Kiryu to stand up and with 20 guys all shooting at the same time ugh !!!
Happy Raven what are you talking about? This game is great! The combat isn’t the best, but still pretty satisfying. The real fun, imo, is in the side quests. They could’ve been the usual “get this thing for me and I’ll give you an item”, but they’re actually their own stories.
free on PS4 :D
Wow, lower score than I expected. Seems like everything gets 4 stars or above.
That's what happens when a lot of great games come out and then a not as great game comes out
feyzal92 yeah but the combat system is now way better (they nerfed dragon of dojima style and buffed rush style) and the game is way harder than 0
EasyAllies scores don't matter...
It's their view that matters...
Short and sweet reviews...
#OnlyOneThatMatters
would've scored higher if it was overated trash
You must have hated the original if this new and heavily improved remake is just above average. The constant comparison to Zero was also pretty annoying I understand its technically the previous game and adopted some of the mechanics, but its a remake of 2006 game and should be judged upon those merits rather than simply as "just a lesser Zero".
Thank you!
I think both perspectives are important. Most people in the west playing Yakuza started with 0, so it makes sense that Kiwami would be compared to 0.
I just like having Brandon Jones give me the lowdown on Video Games. I even re-watch old EZA/GT reviews because of it.
Jesus Christ. I wanted a review not the whole damn story. Spoiler alert would be nice!!
I really liked Yakuza 0 despite some of the repetitive aspects of the game.
The interesting story and environment more than made up for the pointless repetitive street fights, some of the substories that feel like empty chores, and long ass dialog boxes where i feel like im tapping X as quickly as possible to skip through it.
However, I feel like Yakuza Kiwami's upsides DO NOT make up for these repetitive elements. It's the SAME EXACT city (except you don't get to explore the whole additional city of 0), SAME EXACT gameplay mechanics, with a much less captivating story. The draw to keep you going despite the repetitive elements I mentioned is MUCH WEAKER
SPOILERS god damn!
Fuck!! You showed all the story of the game! ALERT SPOILERS BIG SPOILERS
Did not expect that :(
Sending the wrong message Ben, but at least the game is reviewing better almost everywhere else.
People complaining about spoilers of a 12 year old game
Few people have played it. Don't be a douche.
wow that low? and its Ben too? Guess ill cancel that preorder then.
Bearded Sifu It's not really that low. Three and a half stars is like a 7/10. Most people look at that like it's mediocre but if you think about it, a 7/10 is actually a good score.
Honestly I think a lot of people get the average on a scale and the average score of games covered confused.
If 5 would be an average score that would mean scores would either have to constantly be adjusted to keep 5 as an average out of all games scored, or the average would just go up and down. The latter is pretty much always the case. It's the same as grading in education, the average score completely depends on the students. If all students get an 8/10, that would become the average, and a 7/10 would become sub par. Most of the triple A games covered, at least know how to tick the boxes to get a 6+/10 grade, which makes the average to be a lot higher than 5/10.
Basically what Iglian 345 said. It may have an average(mediocre) score, but that average score is still pretty good.
2nd !
Well done Ben
wtf. eza is crazy
Too many good games out there already to be bothered with a 7
ahhh same voicesover and sadly is getting more boring now after the Game Trailer days.... just another boring UA-cam review now.
nice spoilers here. maybe the worst eza review
TNH853 to be fair the original game came out 12 years ago. Spoiler warnings can only reach so far. Pretty sure 12 years after FF7 came out everyone and their mom knew that spoiler. New players won't know what they're looking at and old players who can tell it's a spoiler... Well... They can't really have it spoiled because they already know lol
+Vishal Singh Films it spoiled the ending of Yakuza 0 which I'm currently playing so that sucks
Ryan Ellingson same for me. I think it was lazily written. I checked out the ign review right after and they handled it with way more care. Kind of bummed out honestly.
Why would you watch the review knowing that 0 is the story that started it all.
You asked for it.
Obviously it's going to spoil the start of the game/end of 0..AT THE START of the review.
Jesus, people.
Xeltos ign started by saying the game starts off with kazuma getting out of jail after serving time in a murder stint. While this one says that nishki killed the crime boss and you took the fall. See the difference. Jesus dude
thanks for the spoilers lol now i dont need to play neither zero or kiwami
Anakin Skywalker is WHO???!!!
Now i can save time on watching Star Wars.
Except that Star Wars is one of the most famous franchises in the world while this is a niche series that people are just becoming interested in trying out
I can assure you the Yakuza series is worth playing regardless of how spoiled you are on its narrative.
That's good logic fuck boi.
If your scoring is going to be this nonsensical you should just let the reviews speak for themselves.
So are you guys married to this 5 star system? Because I don't think it's working out very well.
Why... it's the same thing as a 10 scale system
Darrel Grant I agree. I always forget what they said during the other 95% of the review when I don't get minute differences in review scores at the end.
A 10 point scale is actually a 100 point scale on most sites. Which, you can debate the value of having it, but at least it leaves room for a wider range of ratings. This 5 star scale is more like a 3 point scale since it seems to only go from 3.5-4.5 stars for 90% of games. At that point, why have a number at all?
It's a fucking number. lol
If they have a 5 star rating system and you want a 10 point scale.
Then they gave the game a 7 or a 70.
It's simple to do math but nah you'd rather shoot them down.
You shouldn't be watching the review for the number, it's for the thoughts of the person reviewing it.
nope, game sucks
Ben considers himself a fan of the series and gives amazing Yakuza 0 8/10(which nowadays is a score for a very good game, not amazing one) and great Yakuza Kiwami 7/10? Seriously for a fan they are basically 10/10 but to be fair Yakuza 0 deserves 9/10 for sure.
kamilinho07 kiwami deserves lower than a 7/10
So Hellblade, a tedious ASMR jogging simulator that features a pretentious story and presentation by the same developers behind Donte and "FUCK YOUUUUUUUU" gets 4.5 stars yet a remake of the legendary first Yakuza game is only considered as decent/3.5?
Ok then...
J Bowman you are obviously quite upset about the amount of praise hellblade received from reviewers, i get that, it is a game that emphasizes art over gameplay and not everyone likes it
Still, if you give yourself a little time to be rational you will realize that
A) huber reviewed hellblade while kiwami was reviewed by ben, two different people with two different criteria of judgement
B) this game, while having been upgraded, is still and old game that can't quite be expected to keep up with newer titles, but should nevertheless be evaluated in the context of its current release: way beck when, the original yakuza might have been a 10 for all i care, but today it has to confront with games like yakuza zero
Also, why the fuck should the games previously developed by ninja theory impact the way hellblade is perceived? That just seems like useless bias to me
J Bowman scores are not directly comparable. Especially not when written by different people.
Why not? They're both made and directed by Tameem Antoniades who has an ego of the size of an mountain and who thinks he knows better than the actual fans of a series in terms of what makes a good character/game.
Btw, I don't have a problem with "artsy" games, hell, Journey is one of my favorite experiences in gaming. And unlike Hellblade, that game didn't need to spew out tedious expository narration that is straight copy pasted from Norse mythology for 80% of the game while it really has nothing to say.
Mist_T Hellblade just has bad gameplay when compared to many other hack and slash games. It's also repetitive and has some serious lack of replayability. If I were to give Hellblade a score, I'd give it a 4/10. I don't give a shit that it focuses on art.
J Bowman Because some unlikeable people make some amazing games (like with fez), and sometimes directors make good games after a bunch of bad ones.
It's fine to, for example, boycott a game because it was made by shitty people, but it should never come in the way of evaluating its content.
But back on topic, i don't think hellblade is worth a 4.5 stars either, and i agree there are better artistic games.
That being said, hellblade is centered on the themes of mental illness, and it does its best to represent one in the most realistic way possible: something that as far as i remember, i don't remember having been done this well before
That, i feel, is the reason why it has received such a high score from huber, because it is deeply emotional and very innovative
Of course, if you disagree with that it's perfectly fine, but i don't think it's fair to then get mad with EZA because you liked a worse reviewed game more
it's pronounced "key-wa-mi" not "ku-wa-mi"
Game looks interesting, but that combat... good god it looks dated and terrible! Maybe I'll get this on sale in a few years for like $5
James Cooper I had that exact same feeling but once I got my hands on it, it feels great to play. It's 30$ btw.
