Try South Indian
Lamb Balti is probably Cat or Dog Balti
Balti = Bucket just fyi
Hey guys have just left 2 comments below
Bro you LITERALLY ate a huge chunk of lime pickle at the starting... I'm an Indian but I would've died by that... Like seriously bro that's instant death
Blink if you think i'm awesome I feel like I should try this just to see what happens 😂
so thats why each time I tuck into the lime pickle it knocks me about hahaha
I know it's an acquired taste for sure.
Haha
you eat a whole lemon pickle people supposed to lick that lemon pickle you swallow it you are a savage
A Balti in Birmingham, is a culturally distinct food experience. It is excellent.
I concur. We all love BIR but a Balti is on another level. Anything else just doesn't quite cut it lol.
@@ollylewin
Try Chasni if you haven't before....it's amazing!
that Balti looks amazing! Thanks for the shout out!!
Davidsbeenhere I
Heck yeah, our Miami video is finally coming up!
I've seen your vlogs... Just say your mumbai street food tour
David - you have been every where, didn't even think that i would see ur comments here.. 😁
But good to see it man..
And yess
#Davidsbeeneverywhere#
😂 haha
Keep. It up. Man.. Big fan. Of. Your videos 👍😉
Balti means bucket lmao im bengali its the same in bangla 2
You just ate the entire chunk of lemon pickle in the first bite !! 😱 You are supposed to just touch your spoon on it and lick it ... may be a tiny pice of it... what you did there even Indians can’t handle honestly 😆 It’s like gulping half the bottle of tobesco in one go 😬
totally agree
I put the onion salad on the popadom, a big lump of lime pickle, top it off with mango chutney. Nom nom!
SvenTviking You are putting Indians to shame in terms of handling hot stuff 😆
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Really? I love the big chunks of lime. The strong flavour is what attracts me to it. If I'm enjoying the pickle tray I never like to waste any.
UK has large Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani communities that do amazing food, probably best curries anywhere in world I've been to.
We British love Indian food, and for good reason, it’s excellent.
Come to India you will come to know the real Indian food. Curries aren't sweet and neither do we use cream in vegetable Currie nor in NonVeg. Always welcome 🇮🇳
@@akashbhadouria6727 been to india. The food is a little different but I wouldn't say better. I would understand indian people saying its bad though, it's exactly like italians laughing at americans putting cream in carbonara. Both are nice, one is authentic. That said, there are a lot of restaurants now in the UK that make authentic indian curry. The competition is so high (there are over 100 indian restaurants within 1 mile of where I live) that quality has to be excellent or they go out of business and they do whatever they can to make themselves stand out.
@@Oldlard Great to know that, bhut if you will eat in famous restaurants or dhabas(Indian highway desi restaurants) you will come to know that the food tastes very different and better. Wow, is there any chance you live near little India part in UK? Can you suggest me some English food to eat so that I can prepare and eat in my house.Great knowing about your experience.
@@akashbhadouria6727 exactly, try the dishes in dhabas or popular restaurants and you'll know the true flavours.
Indian food is great, dipping peshwari naan bread in tikka masala sauce is amazing !
@Bluepurgatory1 None of it is lol. Just Indian inspired. The Balti out of interest can only be called a Balti if it's from Birmingham or cooked in a Balti bowl made in Birmingham! Can't get any more British than that lad.
I love indian food and im afghan.
I love Afghan cuisine
How wonderful that you were advised to go to ladypool Rd. I live in Birmingham and I’m pleased you had authentic Balti. Can’t get better in the Midlands 👍
Ladypool Road has some of the best curry houses in the UK :)
Hey, it's Matt!
So glad you made it to the Balti triangle (and you enjoyed it - felt the pressure for a moment there)
Was great to meet you guys, thanks for the shout out
Eric and Allison you have really been knocking it out of the park with your videos!! I am loving all the food vlogs, Indian food is a big favorite of mine. Have safe and fun travels back to the United States. Thank you for bringing us along on your adventures!
Watching your old videos and it’s crazy how much you guys have progressed and developed with your editing style and your true personality in front of the camera today. Love it! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Really weird, watched you two for ages, and there you are in my favorite curry house eating a balti. Brilliant
Glad you loved Balti as much as us Brummies do ☺️
You two are so watchable. And you review things without being patronising, it’s so refreshing!
Thank you thank you so much for including your food travels and you have such wonderful descriptions of the food! Two big thumbs up!
As a brummie, I must say watching this is bizarre 😂
Love watching you guys on UA-cam travelling around UK ! you make it very interesting & highly watchable and as an English guy even I'm learning a lot that I didn't know about our countryside, towns & places of interest as well as our different foods & diverse culture. And seeing it through American eyes makes it more interesting. Please come back & do some more trips ! Even though we are a small country there are so many interesting places to visit outside London eg Norfolk, Suffolk, Dorset ,Kent, Northumbria, Highlands Of Scotland, North Wales, Northern Ireland etc...
I think you two are great, love watching your videos, glad you enjoyed Birmingham.
Being a student in Brum this was often a great night! Baltis and booze😉 (cold lager needed).
Next time am up in Brum will find this restaurant.
Whats crazy is that i walk on ladypool road like everyday to go to college and ladypool road gets really busy at night time
Sobib itsmproper quiet tho until midday
You guys are great people. I've been watching all your videos. They are fantastic. You make me feel like travel. . I'm from Argentina And I was looking for a channel of native speakers and finally I came across with your channel. I want to say thanks✌✌🇦🇷
This is the third video I've watched and I'm subscribing because you guys are so good at tracking down the specialities.
Love the way shops in UK can have very few things left in stock, but you're still able to find things as exotic as a beetroot tortilla wrap.
Leyton Jay that’s not exotic tho
Nice observation! Never noticed but true
It is for me. I've never even *heard* of a beetroot tortilla wrap!
O poor 😂 u hit ur first bite on a pickle with papadam. Pickle use to taste or eat with every bite of naan or roti to enhance the taste of curries or bite u have. Not to eat at once thats acidic for stomach. 😛
Nice meal... the place liked so clean and inviting! Love your air b and b as well!
Just found your channel! I like how many of your videos are based on food you eat in different countries. It's great aspect! Nice videos!
"I think we're going to drink some more beer" - best words ever!! LOL!!!
wow I remember the days when you never ever had cutlery in a balti house, thinking late 80's, you just ate it in the naan with your fingers.
It sounds weird but Indian food seems to take on another level of awesomeness if you eat it the proper way. Not entirely sure why but it does!!
If you ever had back to Birmingham, go to the Kings Indian Dining in Kings Heath, it's been around for decades and is spectacular.
im glad you injoyed our uk curry houses
No rice?
Never rice with a balti
phill633vgs always rice with a Balti !! Lol
Crazy Chameleon Guy Wrong, just wrong!... even knives forks and spoons are wrong! Nan/skateboard nan/ table nan should be used to eat a balti, depending on appetite.... lol
@@phill633vgs westerners do not eat with our hands.. thats just disgusting..
@@zingzzingz3571 I do .
Great video, but it seems weird eating Balti at noon!
9pm after a few pints is more like it :D
You couldn't get a better opening shot for your Birmingham video than of a Land Rover Defender sitting st the kerb!
I'm quite happy eating those meals at noon, but it does seem to be unusual.
Love you Yanks, you're so open and honest.
Yummm, I could practically smell those delicious spices from here! Have a safe trip back, it’s been unseasonably cold here in Orlando lately, so enjoy the beautiful weather in Miami! 🏖👍🏼😎
The first pickle was lime pickle :)
It's disgusting. I was bet £5 to eat a pot of that once. I lost. As I was both hungry and short of cash as the time, I think it says alot about it. Mango chutney is the best by far and is very good with kebabs and tandoori chicken.
I would have walked away with the £5, no problem. Mango is ok, but so sickly sweet.
I have to admit I love lime pickle not necessarily on it's own but I tend to cut my limes into smaller pieces and eat it with my meat to give it a sharper vibe.
TheBaconWizard Lime pickle is great in a cheese sandwich.
Pluggit1953 :O I bet it is! thanks for the tip, I'll certainly be trying that :D
Imrans boy that took me back used to go there back in the mid 90s though back then we used to eat it straight from the bowl using a fork or spoon and the naan. I also like eating popadoms with any kind of curry, don't think it's the right thing to do but hey I like it. You should try a chapati if you find a naan too much. Come back soon
To it from Bowl is the Indian way but.....
Excellent, I think the Balti originated in Birmingham, and is now popular all over the UK--Its not really a curry as such but more a mildly spiced sometime fruity UK invented dish, really good, puts me in the mood for one NOW!--pity its ten in the morning here now-need to wait till tonight. Enjoyed your English adventure--enjoy yourtime at home.
Indian restaurant in Turkey !
Biggest sales point was "" our chef is from BRADFORD " !
Fabulous curry as well !
When he took the whole lime pickle piece, I was shouting at my laptop "nooo not that much pickle". Lol, but more power to him.
Birmingham my second home
Al Frash is my favourite balti place there, well worth a try if you're ever back in Birmingham!
The minty flavour with the sauces was in the yoghurt on its own too. Mint yoghurt is really common in UK curry houses, and then the dark green paste was coriander (cilantro) mostly and sometimes with mint too.
I love Balti, it's so good. I tend to only have the Sharwoods type though, one day I hope to try a proper balti if I can ever get the chance.
Next time eat your Balti from the dish with the naan bread as a 'scoop'! 😉
Lurch 45 but you should show them......
Lukas Gmünder would love to! 😆
Lurch 45 oh yes☺😎☺ Indian food is great😋
Couple of tips
1. Eat with your hands. No need for a knife and fork with Indian food. They take the fun away.
2. Try making Keema yourself. The BBC Good Food website has a good recipe. Keema is cheap and easy to make.
Madhav Sharma can he use his mouth to eat or not?? Is that allowed?. 😑 I am Indian and its stupid to ask people to use right hand. Wash your hands properly and eat comfortably thats it.
raw Lemon Exactly.I am Indian too and I feel the best way to eat Indian food is to eat the way you want. There are no rules.Use spoons and forks if you want or just use your hands.
It's not about cheap ingredient or meat. It's bout right spices. Way western makes minced meat dishes totally differs Keema taste
Need spoons and forks for some stuff but not with roti sabji for sure
Hello from Glasgow Scotland I only just found your channel and I think the both of you are frikn awesome ....
Glad to see you enjoying our British food.
I’m so glad you travelled to the real English places
About as English as Pakistan Birmingham is 😂
LOL!! that was a pickle u can't just take a whole bite of a piece of lemon pickle on a papad!!
nice blog again, will miss you in the UK for balti you need to eat where the locals eat to get the real taste, that look just like a standard curry bit posh, but still looked OK hope you had a great time at home and refreshed for more travels
Many years ago I used to attend the Internation Spring Gift Fair at the NEC. At the end of the day a bunch of us would go to Spark Hill and enjoy balti. Very fond memories :-)
Lamb Tikka balti with spinach and potato 😍
Could you be any more British, curry twice a week, not passing anywhere that sells beer without having one and moaning about the weather. 🇬🇧
Lucas D What? Loads of people do! I have a curry once a week, Saturday night wouldn’t be complete without a curry and several pints after rugby.
Lucas D actually the curry sold in the UK was developed/ adapted during colonial days to suit the English palate. The British like sauces so curry was less dry/ rice based.
Aryan Girl1492 no I'm saying that the curries in the UK are specific to the UK because during Victorian times they were adapted to suit British tastes. The type of curry we get in the UK you don't get anywhere else. It's part of our colonial history!
Our education of the travelling colonial-types is complete!
Chicken tikka masala is considered a British national dish.
I grew up on that side of the city, I remember all you could get was Balti at in those resturants in the 70's (table naan is a must if they are doing them) I took my daughter who grew up there too & her icelandic boyfriend to Al Faisals in the next street on the same day! His reaction to spicey food was amusing..
you guys realy get around love your trips around the uk !!!!!!!!
I’m your new subscribers from japan 🇯🇵
You should come to Shrewsbury on next visit, birth place of Darwin and the very first sky scraper.
Hey, I'm from Shrewsbury! :D
Ive Moved to Shrewsbury Recently From Brum & Am In A Little Village Called Pontesbury... Im Still Adjusting To Country Life, Was A Shock At 1st .. I Live in One of Those Black & White Houses With the Black Wooden Beams, I Think Their Called Tudor Houses, But Still go Back & Forth Fortnightly For Goods, That I Can Only Get In Brum, Mainly Cooking Ingredients, Amongst Other Things... Love The Scenic Views Especially From the Top Of Pontesbury Hill, 🌳🌲🍃😎💚💙❤💛
Awesome series. Been to many of the places you went to in the peak district. I live in Birmingham so great to see you enjoying the food. The Botanist is a great bar and the balti triangle is ... Boston....
Bostin'.....
Mmmmm - Lime pickle is my favourite. One thing I discovered when I visited New York - they, like the UK have the same idea about a 'standard' set of accompaniments when you order poppadoms - you might have noticed in the UK you always get lime pickle, cucumber raita, onions & cucumber and mango chutney. In New York's curry houses - they also all have the same accompaniments to their poppadoms - but they're different to ours, nice - just different. Was a pleasant change!
You seem to buy everything from the most expensive supermarkets.
The Co-Op isn't an expensive supermarket.
I was going "Oh, nooooo!" as you were popping that big piece of salty picked lemon along with that little papadum piece.... one should never eat such a large piece of Indian pickle in one mouth-ful (I'm sure you figured it out now!).
If you like it, why not?
@@Ynysmydwr it burns twice once when you eat it and then again the next day. im in bradford so we have our fair share of Pakistani restaurant up here, go for a vinderloo and put the bog roll in the fridge. Magic
the papadam is side dish which is generally eaten simultaneously with the main food, and the pickle which you ate is suppose to be eaten in very very small amount, you ate it with papadam in very big chunk, it is for tasting in side
lamb and spinach balti is one of my favorites. try that next time
When I visited Birmingham "back in the day", my British friend took me to a "Balti House". Food was great and I was told BALTI cuisine originated in Pakistan and/or NW India, and somehow made it to Birmingham and later other parts of the Midlands and then the UK. Another story is that it originated in Birmingham itself by the immigrants from Pakistan/India. No one really knows for sure. But such is the role of the British Empire on food...
Joshua, I advise my friends here in the USA and any one else planning to visit the UK to get out of London and MEET and TALK to the people in all the other parts of your great country- You will have a great time! I do every time I visit.
Gary L london is merely a gateway...but even in london..get out of the tourist spots and visit the local areas....get out to twickenham...camden....north london parks are beautiful ...if you like animals check out our shelters and city farms...go horse riding in Ealing...sailing on the many lakes...london is vast and different.
Jay, you are right, London is, of course, a great world-class city. The point I was trying to make was that foreign visitors, after being on the usual "tourist trails" (you know what they are), should make a point to go out and visit the rest of Great Britain; including "Greater London", not always on the "standard tourist itineraries." So much to see and do in your country and the British people are some of the friendliest people I know (despite the stereotype "British reserve").
Gary L yes of course....ive lived in london 35 years and of course you do the main attractions...my perfect day out is a wLk along the Thames on a summers day preferbly with a couple of glasses of wine and lunch on a boat cafe or in Covent Garden....but equally im happy spending a few hours in the beautiful Gladstone Park two minutes from my home and plus its free to do so. If i exit london im off the my second favourit place which is exmouth ...for a day on the beach or sight seeing in discovering in Bath or city of Cambridge...i love it .
Jay, I am with you-in spirit! Whenever I visit my British friends I know that we do not always go to places on the well trod tourist trail. Its being able to have the "best of both worlds" that make me feel very lucky to be able to travel around your country. I am an unabashed Anglophile.
This dude ate a whole of lemon pickle 😂😂 seriously
Superb guys: so pleased you spent so long in Birmingham! My balti favourites are Adil's or the Diwan - will happily take you there for meals if you decide to come back.
if you two ever fancy visiting Scotland again you are welcome to free accommodation & good food recommendations for the west coast.
Hope you enjoyed your time in Brum.
Only one place where you would get best taste of indian food and that is india
Amrit Kumar stfu
H S what happen bro...
*Sheffield
BIR Indian food is different from food in India... It is a British modification of Indian cuisine. It's actually so good, that many restaurants in India are now serving BIR food... It's also hotter... Although Balti is quite mild in either case.
Twenty years ago I would have disagreed with you but having just got back from a three month visit I`d say you are correct.
I love how you guys are so positive about the UK, you should be hired by the UK tourist board.
No way guys!!! Can't believe u came to my home town and not too far from where I live. That's awesome.
Curry is the national dish of the UK forget ya Sunday roasts an fish an chips also if in Manchester check out the curry mile and if in London check out brick lane both full of curry houses
Mad man ting Ting
No mate curry is not the national dish of the UK.
It is relatively new to the UK.
Fish and chips or English breakfast
No, still fish and chips...
My only apprehension is that when foreigners try Indian food for the first time, the impression about the dish that they cultivate and carry back with them ( either good or bad) is based on the cooking ability of chef. Not all chefs in restaurants are authentic or good in preparing Indian food. Some of them may ruin the whole thing and poor unaware customer who has eaten it for first time will go with an idea for ever that particular dish/ indian food taste horrible. In reality, however, that may or may not be the case. Like for example, keema ( minced meat) served here has good amount of veggies in it? Well i have had keema all my life ( at home and restaurants), but i have never seen it with so many vegetables. Its just a minced mutton dish. Also, the thing or the pot in which they are serving main course food is not even called Balti. Its one of the most common utensils used in Indian households and is called Kadaahi. Baalti on the other hand means bucket. It is much deeper cylindrical shaped (almost in the shape of a glass) with handle bar on it. Are you sure this place is really an Indian joint? I mean, who knows, may be its managed by our Pakistani or Bangladeshi friends?
Grv Nvm it’s a Pakistani restaurant.
punit p Punjabi British food, made in a Pakistani restaurant by a Pakistani chef. There is a difference, particularly British twist on sub continent food
Still the title of the content is indian food because it's really indian food.
Hey guys, welcome here to stay, 20 mins from LHR, next time! Paul and Penny. x
I live at the bottom of the road... hehe ... there's so many restaurants open now... omg heavenly desserts
Manchester has the curry mile similar to the balti triangle.
Yes mate! I've already suggested that they come to Manchester - we've got some AWESOME places!
They really do need to come to Manchester!
Brick lane in London.
Paul Wheeler facts not getting anything better than ladypool rd
Yeah, Leicester has the Golden Mile, the food there is great 🍚🍲
When you ate the whole lemon pickle at the beginning my god you are a legend
I live in Birmingham & lived 1 min from ladypool rd & it’s arguably the best place in Birmingham to go for a curry & you guys went to one of the best place ‘imrans’ for food too, we go on on occasions mostly.
So glad you enjoyed your time here
Err' sry guys, but did you forget to order the rice.
That's the usual accompaniment. :)
Patrick Oneil naan bread is the usual accompaniment for balti not rice
Nearly always bread with Indian. There are actually very few regions of India that are major rice growing areas.
Not everyone eats rice lol...
Expert here. ;) Patrick is actually correct. Locally, we eat those mild spice curries with 1 or 2 naans (or rotis, because naan can only be made with special ovens, not available in homes) and end it up with some rice, basically like 1 - 2 scoops of fresh rice on those big spoons. I use that because there is no way I am going to end all those vegetables so I end the contents of the balti along with some rice.
Yes but you dont HAVE to have rice
The dish is called balti which actually means a bucket , so it’s supposed to be served in bucket shaped dish . This has been served in a dish called a kadhai .
Not even sure if there is really a dish called balti although there is dish called kadhai chicken
eugeneluther I can’t speak for anywhere else in the world, but in Birmingham there is a dish called a Balti, and it’s served in the wok-shaped bowls.
Those of us who’ve eaten it and enjoyed it for years and have happy memories of sharing them with friends in the Balti houses of Stoney Lane and Ladypool Road don’t really care if it’s authentic to anywhere else.
The people who make it and sell it call it Balti, who are any of the rest of us to quibble?
Whenever we go abroad, the first thing we have when we get home is an Indian, that's the main thing we miss glad you've discovered it and they all tend to be very affordable
Balti houses have gone upmarket since Ilived near Birmingham. We used to have the challenge of not using a fork and only eating the curry with the nan bread.
You guys should collab with Mark wiens
hes rude and doesnt care about his followers.. and very false..
Balti was created in Birmingham.
Balti is 'hindi' word meant "bucket"
@@NeerajSharma-if7rs But it was invented in Birmingham.
@@Anonymous-lw4nq why not enter the word in oxford english dictionary then?
@@NeerajSharma-if7rs I oxford were to be under me, I would surely do it.
Hey guys, great to have you back in Blighty, come back soon ok?
Balti Houses seemed to kick off big time in the Birmingham area in the late 1980s and early 90s. Then the concept spread around the UK and eventually you saw supermarkets selling Balti sauces and ready meals. Always thought it was strange buying the stuff in supermarkets because the whole point was the serving with a bowl and naan bread! No rice.
The first Balti House I went to was on an invite from a friend. The tables had glass tops and the menu was sandwiched between the glass top and the wood table top!
That baalti looks like a kadaahi..😅
Afifa Bano hahaha.....Same thought......angrejo ko bewakoof bana raha hai....kadhai ko balti bol kar.....Enjoy the food 👍👍👍👍👍
Exactly........ I was thinking the exact same thing......"hame pta hai ye balti nahi hai, restaurant walo ko pta hai ye balti nahi hai....par in angrejo ko nahi pta ye balti nahi hai"
Baalti means bucket right? kadai means Indian wok, that's what you see in this video.
It is kadahai, they should know balti is actually a bucket.
You guys ever been to Leeds and Bradford? Leeds has largest amount of Victorian shopping arcades in UK, largest indoor market in Europe and Bradford is also curry capital of Great Britain.
Glasgow is the Curry Capital of Europe. Everyone knows that.
Deep fried pizza too - as recommended by the Scottish Heart Association
Lucas D Bradford, and it's because it has a large Asian/Indian community there. It was awarded the curry capital a few years ago.
www.thesun.co.uk/news/1944819/bradford-named-curry-capital-of-britain-for-a-record-breaking-sixth-time-in-a-row/
Bradford does not have a large Indian community. It has a large Pakistani community. Big difference!
Fun fact the Balti dish is actually a British dish, not Indian. Asians that immigrated noticed that people loved their foodand flavours. But it took long to prepare. So the Balti dish was created. It is essentially fast food. As in good food fast
We Brummies (people from Birmingham UK) love a Balti. We usually eat it straight from the balti dish, using pieces of the naan bread to scoop the curry up. When your bread is all gone, you use the spoon to finish off what is left. The plate is just so that the waiter can carry the balti to you. The balti is also cooked in the dish it is served to you in.
Used to go to Saleems in the triangle in the 70s before it became sophisticated. They used to have a dustbin/garbage bin in the middle of the restaurant. Lovely grub, happy days
this is not balti.
this is kadaie.

Yum!! Balti is SO British!
nope curry in britain is nothing like in india sorry but its true
No, Balti in the UK is tailored to UK tastes, and the word comes from Portuguese balde, meaning a bucket, the Portuguese influence on India is often forgotten.
Aryan Girl1492 nope balti dish invented in britain so lol at you
Curry is literally the national dish of Britain
Aryan Girl1492 answer me this is pasta italian?
You should check out Hampshire next time! The birth place of the royal navy, the air force and the army, has the historic city of winchester, once the capital of the country, the old royal hunting grounds for william the conqueror, including the marked spot of one of his son's death from a hunting accident in the forest, and portsmouth has the historic dockyard, with a dredged up tudor warship, the first ironclad ship, and nelsons flagship HMS victory (from the battle of trafalgar). And it's right on the doorstep of the jurassic coast, wiltshire (salisbury and stonehenge) and the south downs national park!
We went to the Historic Dockyard last August and the HMS Queen Elizabeth was in. Got a perfect view of the HMS Victory with the brand spanking new ship in the background. Was wonderful.
Sounds wonderful and I'm from the U.K.! 👍🏼😃
Great choice! Not forgetting Kingley Vale, just over the border into West Sussex, but just down the road, the oldest Yew Forest in Europe. Each tree planted where a warrior fell.
I had no idea about this!
Loki Scheissmessiah as a loyal yorkshireman i have to agree, Hampshire is one of my favourite places and love Portsmouth. Amazing things to do and see
