Roster regardless if they’ve/their respective franchises’ve not had much new since the previous game and regardless if they’ve not got particular popularity levels. Though believe it or not Lucas almost replaced Ness in Melee, but Ness was kept after Mother 3 for the N64 being scrapped, and Jigglypuff was added late in Development for Brawl and close to’ve been cut like with Toon Link and Wolf (hence their exclusions from the Main Story of the Subspace Emissary).

When I unlocked these characters, I never needed a tutorial, I was just passing all the fights and randomly I had new characters. By the way, good tutorial!

All Unlockable Fighters in the Original Smash Bros. but Luigi are unlocked through Classic Mode, pretty interesting. Boy are some of the Unlock Methods stressful, completing Classic Mode in under 20 Minutes, completing Classic Mode with 3 lives on Normal Difficulty without receiving any Continues.
I remember this game feeling so complete and playing it for hours without getting bored. Then meelee came out and I thought it was a big roster, since you only played 4 max, plus all the minigames and trophey. I had it for years and still felt I couldn't finish it, since looking for online help was so hard I discovered most of it by myself and with friends. Man good times.

Back then i heard that 2 other more characters could be unlocked in very hard ways: Dark Link and Wario Dark link could be unlocked if you played very hard mode with one life, in less than 2 minutes solo game and Wario by completing solo game with less than 20% Damage
What a surprise it is that Classic Mode is used for unlocking all Unlockable Fighters (not to mention features like the 8bit Mushroom Kingdom Stage) in the Original Smash Bros. but Luigi.
C. Falcon: Complete 1P Mode in 5 minutes or minus and defeat him. Ness: Complete 1P Mode whit 3 lives in normal or in more difficulty whitout continues and defeat him. Jigglypuff: Complete 1P Mode and defeat him. Luigi: Pass the Bonus 1 Practice whit the 8 start characters and defeat him. Mushroom Kingdom: Complete 1P Mode whit all characters.
