You were holding the guitar correctly at the start Guitar chord boxes and tablature have the lowest (thickest string) at the bottom of the box, and the highest (thinnest) string at the top. This is meant to simulate you looking downwards at the guitar neck while holding the guitar (the strings will be in the same order).
