    Adm Ernest King was quite the character. Drach's videos on him, and several others that mention him, paint a picture of a very driven, some-nonsense, effective individual who loved his navy and hated almost everyone else with varying levels of how useful/helpful they could be to HIS Navy. The fact that he helped to restructure the Naval Academy into a more-efficient form while he was there, a form that remains to this day, means a lot to his legacy. If there were anyone who could drop a hammer and hound people to get things fixed, it was him.

    The head of the Bureau of Ordinance at the start of WW II had been a lead member of the team that designed the Mark 14 torpedo so he was not going to admit that he screwed up in designing that torpedo. Blaming the submarine captains was more pollical expedient and pointing the finger at someone other than himself or his staff was better.

    If you really want to have a look at the clean up after pearl harbour. Drach has a great 3 part 30-40 min each part video on how they fixed the fixable battleships after the attack.
    Oh, the reason that it says the five minute video is it that used to be a five minute info video on ww1 and ww2 ships but he expanded his content.
    Also, he has a two-part video on the battle of Tsushima about the second pacific fleet from Russia if you are interested. Part one of that deals with the journey (voyage of the damned)part two actually has the battle. The funniest two videos that drach has on his channel. Cmdr Dick O'Kane had plenty of time to experience the horrible Mk-14 in his earlier time with Mush Morton on the Wahoo, and by the time he arrived in the Pacific with the Tang they were getting a handle on the problems and having very good luck with most of them. His channel name is pronounced “dra-KIN-ifel”, but it can be simpler just to call him “Drach”. This is one of his best videos.
    ANOTHER drawback to the Mk 14 that isn’t discussed in this video is that the nose cone of the torpedo tended to crush on impact and FORCIBLY EJECT the exploder mechanism before it could detonate the warhead.
    However, once you get the bugs worked out of it, under-keel detonation using magnetic influence is in fact a very good idea which is used in virtually all modern torpedos, at least for attacking surface ships.

    33:40 Oh he wasn't the only one, a large part of the US Submarine arms commanders till Lockwood arrived were also against the Submarine crews.
    For instance one submraine got back to Pearl Harbour after a patrol and the entire crew threw their matresses out the hatches because they the black with mold, this was due to a lack of aircon and this wasn't the only issue with the sub it was basically run ragged and was falling apart, another submarine had arrived with back at Pearl in such a poor state again falling part, including the engine that at the end the engineers had been eyeing the crews bedsheets as they were trying to work out how much of them they were going to need to make a sail to try and get back to Pearl Harbour.
    The commander before Lockwood read the reports inspected the boats and said they were in perfect working order and the crew simply had to "Do better", how on earth he was shot by someone i don't know.

    The failure of the Mark 14 was mostly institutional. The higher ups of the Navy and Congress decided not to spend the relatively small amount to test it. In the end that was only the first part of the scandal and not the worst part. That was the coverup; and to this day the names who actually did it are very hard to identify. That is why I wish someone would do a real documentary on this which I consider the greatest scandal in the US military in WW2. It took almost two years to fully right; when it should only have taken a few months.
    the admirals who fought any investigation and tried to blame it on Submarine crews should have been court-martialed and sent to Leavenworth; instead they apparently all skated and retired on full pensions. some of them even got promoted.

  • @Joe-xq3zu
    @Joe-xq3zu 7 місяців тому

    The fact that no one was court-martialed for the absolute shit show that was the development and deployment of the mk14 is a f*ing travesty
    As Drac said, the lack of live fire testing prewar was at least understandable if distasteful, but the constant obstructionism and refusal to even acknowledge the existence of any problems is just unforgivable.

    • @Vyrexuviel
      @Vyrexuviel 29 днів тому

      Because Admiral King, the guy in charge of the Navy, absolutely hated the British Royal Navy for the way they ran roughshod over the US Navy back before WW1. They were like "awww, the lil baby 'muricans think they got a navy, isn't that so cute? now get out of the way, the big boys are here".
      I think one quote of his was "the royal navy was quite nice, in how they allowed us access to the High Seas". He really fucking hated the British because of that, and resisted any efforts to figure out how the British were doing convoy escort shit because of it, probably leading to a great deal of American merchant shipping getting sunk.

      @@Vyrexuviel so King put personal prejudice ahead of the good of his country and the lives of his sailors? He was probably annoyed that when the USN sent a squadron to help the RN in WWI their gunnery was so bad they were sent for remedial training

    • @Vyrexuviel
      @Vyrexuviel 27 днів тому

      @@davidmcintyre8145 Kinda. Racism and patriotism kinda went hand-in-hand back then, and King had an exceptionally low opinion of the Royal Navy due to the way their commanders arrogantly 'allowed' the US navy to even exist in international waters during WW1. He wasn't in command then, he was at most a ship-commander at the time, he only ascended to what HE would have liked to call the "Arch-Admiralty" for WW2, by which point his view of the British was probably "pompous arrogant buffoons who'd gleefully use MY SHIPS AND MY MEN to protect their own wretched asses rather than get stuck in themselves".
      So his refusal to deal with the british was more akin to him trying to protect his men from what he perceived as their incompetence, not realizing that the British got rid of their incompetents very fast during the war. His personal vendetta against the British Navy -did- get in the way of the US gaining tactics and knowledge that the British had at first, but his own staff did an end-run around his refusals and got the intel anyway, which King begrudgingly turned a blind eye to, because it -did- start saving his men and ships.
      Bear in mind that the Drachinifel episode about him (running for somewhere around an HOUR) is titled "Semper Iratus" for a GODDAMN REASON. ^^ The man was perpetually pissed off about SOMETHING.

    The Royal Navy did the anti-torpedo refit on the much smaller number of battleships and heavy cruisers it decided to retain after WW1, which used up the whole naval budget in the mid 1930s when anything that was going to be ready for WW2 needed to be built. The only problem was, that to avoid losing speed, they took armour off the decks and the roofs of turrets, making them more vulnerable to air attack at just the moment when aircraft carriers were about to become the decisive naval weapon until the 21st century, when drones became decisive and aircraft carriers became obsolete.

    This would come back to haunt him on his fourth war, patrol where he would be labelled as to timid a captain despite the fact that he launched practically every single torpedo, he had at target, and none of them hit, or they missed or they detonated prematurely…😮
    Red Ramage’s rampage would occur with his second ship at around the same time the U.S. actually manage to fix the Mark 14 torpedo’s problems.

    "So many people are going to die because this was a bad idea".
    To be fair, so many people were also going to fail to die.
    In all seriousness, it's hard to figure out who dies and doesn't die in 1941-1943 if the torpedoes worked or how the war would change; we we don't know most of the failures.
    If a sub is sunk, you can expect every crewmember to die. With most WWII US subs lost on patrol, we know roughly when and where they died but not how.
    Those especially were the people who died because of the torpedo.

    The worst thing about BOA is that they were aware of these problems, but because fixing them would've meant particular factories would have shut down. A complication that certain politicians didn't want to happen because it may have meant they didn't get re-elected.

    If I had been in charge of the Bureau of Ordinance after WWI, testing of the Mk 14 torpedo would've been REQUIRED.

    Bureau of ordinance incompetence and corruption sadly remained after ww2 and tried to kill the sidewinder missile because it would replace their missile at a fraction of the cost and a much greater rate of success.

    Imagine if they actauly had a Torpedo that worked how many tons of ships more would japan have lost and so many US lives would not of been wasted on a attacks that failed because someone could not be othered to see if it worked. But no they cost so much better not waste it in find if the dumb thing worked it must because we made it. Did they not learn for other things you need a prototype to find the bugs then fix them and improve till you get one that works otherwise you are wasting time building dud Torpedos.

    Admiral King's hatred for the British was legendary. Despite the fact that the Royal Navy had been the most powerful navy in the world for the last 200 years, despite that even though Britain and America were considered even in naval power by 1940 most pragmatic American Admiral's consider the Royal Navy to be better, and despite the fact that the Royal Navy had been single handedly taking on both the German and Italian Navy's for the last 2 years and mostly winning, Admiral King held them in contempt. He pretty much ignored all the hard won experience the British had in hunting U-boats which would have been useful in the first months after pearl harbor when U-boats were hunting off the east coast. On multiple occasion's Roosevelt had to order King to cooperate with the Royal Navy when planning operations.

    34:10 The commander of that Sub was so angry he stormed into the US Submarines commander Lockwood, who was on the sub crews side, and was about to scream and shout at Lockwood over the Torpedo and Lockwood was quite will to let him do it and then let the guy off, thats how bad it was that a sinior officer was ready to let an office commit insubordination and then let him off, fortunately for Lockwoods ears the poor sub commander had got so angry he was unable to speak only to be told his Torpedo's were fine, its not recorded what his reaction to that sentence was but i wouldn't have wanted to be in the room he was told.
