Lord Vishnu and His incarnation Lord Krishna are black deities and you will find Their idols are usually up of black stone especially in southern Indian states. In north Indian states' temples, Their idols are made up of white marble. It is primarily because the religious texts that prescribe idol making followed by the two regions are different. I don't particularly know the reason of this difference, my guess is the black granite is not available in north Indian states focing the people to use white marble which is abundantly available.
