Lester is a very versatile player, at home delving into the Miles Davis Quintet songbopok (Blues By Five - also on YT) to fitting in well with this older music. He also has a burnished tone on flugel, sadly not as well known as he should be, given his talent.

I agree 👍 I'd say he was initially more familiar with the likes of Miles Davis and Clarke Terry and we used to tease him a bit when it comes to playing the really traditional Dixieland numbers, but he's learning more trad numbers all the time these days. We are slowly getting to him!! 😁

@@AndrewClancyJazz As an OLD (:-() trumpet player myself - it was Jimmy Deuchar and Hank Shaw for me - I appreciate good jazz of all styles from Rex Stewart, Hot Lips Page and Red Allen to some really young players around now - Austin Ford is a really great modern player in the States (there are some You Tubes of him) . Most trumpet players look happy, and with the range of Lester, he has every right to be - he really deserves to be better known, but thanks to the BBC's policy on jazz these days there are so few opportunities for jazz players. I long for the days of Jazz Club, where you got two live sets each week - you might have Alex Welsh sharing the bill with, say, Ronnie Scott - a chance for the casual listener to find some music they might not otherwise have heard.
