Hello, I used to live in Ocean Drive years ago when I was younger , I went to Ocean Drive Elmentray School in 7th and 8th Grade....I remember this dance, it took me awhile but I could do it. My name is John Bill Steelman age now 71 years old. I am on Facebook.com as John Steelman retired , you see me playing a guitar. If anyone remembers me , please write.......thanks.....John
A lot of similarities to the rave culture of the 90's...groundbreaking sound pioneered by black artists, limited places to go to hear it, and it brought people together to dance all night
Hey Bobby : you recognized me . SHAGGIN'S SMOOTH & ONE BUTTON COOL . I APRECIATE YOU . SEE YOU AT MID WINTER ! STOP & SAY HEY . GOT 20 NRW STEPS AND A COUPLE MORE TURNS !
Some important details are missing here…the dance was discovered by Ms Shag from Charlie’s place. Blacks were not allowed on Ocean drive outside of work. Charlie’s was a place specifically for blacks but Charlie allowed anyone in his establishments. Whites would come and party with blacks and would take the dance moves back to there areas. Charlie was beat and tortured for allowing blacks and whites and his place by the klan. I find it interesting that you mentioned the dance and how you teach it; but failed to pay homage.
It is the swing dance of the deep south " THE SHAG" Take it from me . " ONE BUTTON COOL" Come to Fat Harold's and let me entertain you . And teach the secret of the dance . " A man who can dance is seriously sexy !"

She was also a jitterbug… you worked in the shipyards in Charleston….. She amazes me to this day she was born in 1919
She and my father could clear a dance floor….. my father also taught dancing at Arthur Murray….. He was a smooth criminal :-)
Fat Harold’s my favorite bar and the one next to the beach
Good explanation Jeppi. Left us too soon
Cherry Grove Beach and OD or ocean Drive beach. The best beaches that were affordable.

Dancing leads to sex!
Over rated dumb dance. Looks like ballet with some swing thrown in.
I threw in 31 different style dances and built it to Shag !
It always looks strange to outsiders . Intricacies are hidden until you try it .
