Tragic how a city with so much character and atmosphere has turned into a boring highrise metropolis of concrete and glass. Those 70s architects should have been hanged for the irreparable damage they did to hundreds of communities towns and city's. Remove history and there's just a sprawling sterility of broiling concrete, with nothing to connect to.
In Perth, there have been some complete idiots over the years dealing with town planning. That building at 2:40 was spectacular. Imagine if that was still there today instead of the eyesore that is there now
Beyond words - the city was demolished by a group of developers for their own gain. Not a thought about architectural heritage or leaving behind perfect examples of early Perth for future generations to enjoy. This didn't happen in Adelaide thank god!
A few of the old pics reminded me of Adelaide. Glad Adelaide hung on to some of its heritage so it's not a soulless concrete jungle like Perth appears to be.
I get that it's not practical to keep all the old historical buildings BUT, if you're going to tear down a beautiful old building, it should be replaced with a better-looking, better-built, more architecturaly-significant one. In no case there did that happen. Every new building shown is just cheaply-fabricated commercial-space junk. Fine for an industrial estate, but hardly the best solution for prime city spaces.Surely, it's not too much to say that any replacement should improve the visual appeal of the city overall. Obviously what that might mean will vary according to individual tastes etc, but is should at least be obvious that cheap pre-fab-looking aluminium and glass boxes are not an acceptable replacement for hand-hewn stone classical architecture.
At least Fremantle got it right. The building on the Corner or St Georges Tce (I think T&G) and the one with Gargoyles up the road should not have been pulled down. Its was said that an example of the one with Gargoyles had a twin in South Africa and therefore didn't need saving.
There's just no comparison...it's like comparing cheap Chinese plastic plates and cups with antique beautifully crafted cutlery, vases and art nouveau ornaments
@@thevannmann May be true in the past, but the modern products made for general public are a far cry from the craftmanship that made them special. Kinda like Perth then and now.
There's no need to demolish these beautiful buildings, just build your boxes a bit further up or down. What is the obsession with building on a piece of land that already has a fully functioning building?
I like all the before shots, too much glass now ,I think you need to update the photos even more now perth keeps on changing for the worse I like perth how it was ,not like it is and I live in the metro area.
But i am sad. The first time when I came to Australia was in 1984 and every other big town such as Adelaide Sydney and Melbourne allready lost their autentic looks but Perth looked rather still unick. They could have kept it like that but did not understand or learn the lessons how thing were screwed up over east in the looks. So join the club and do the same shit overhere in the west.
Appropriate music - so sad some of those beautiful old buildings have been replaced by characterless monstrosities. Understand if they had to be demolished for safety reasons but a real shame ☹️
Yea Perth has lost all its great history, but if you travel a little down to Fremantle or Busstleton the place is filled with old buildings and relics.
Man, the soundtrack and visual for this must have been done by a work experience kid in 1987. Museum and Yacht Rock is like Winston Churchill and Japanese Polka. And all you got is 3 minutes? That's Perth...the last bastian of the British Empire, Liddle Britain, Hello Landsdale, Rocko,..with a relevent budget, heading south.
Yes, if it’s old it has to go. Perth city has no sense of continuity and the buildings that stand there now are like sets out of Star Trek. The powers that be, take the view that conservation is little more than gutting an old building, but keeping the facade and then drowning it in gallons of gloss paint. A city without a sense of its past, is like a boil which has sprung up over night.
Oh what a shame they bull dozed all those buildings for crappy modern ones, does anyone ever think what those old buildings replaced when they were built, no they dont.

For someone that has been away from Perth for many years and homesick, this was beautiful. Thank you Perth Museum.
What a shame to demolish all them outstanding buildings, just to replace them with a matropolis! R.I.P old Perth 😭
I thought the same thing
Architects and designers should make an oath not to demolish a beautiful historic building no matter how much the developer wants to pay them.
