@@jp783 it’s because it’s not played on the typical 4 beats you would count in a typical song like this, it’s played amazingly, the drums are just played on the down beat of every bar
@@djcsessions674 No, that's not what I'm talking about. I mean the drummer/band as a rhythm section, lost the pulse. I can tell the difference. And what he did on the album and what he's trying to do here isn't rocket science. They lost the pulse. If you can play a rhumba on the drums or think of the inverted rhythm as a "rockified" rhumba, it makes the figure a lot easier. You're playing a basic rock beat, albeit inverted (which is why knowing the rhumba pattern is helpful e.g's Repitition & My Little Suede Shoes by Charlie Parker) - or with the snare accent on the weak beats of 2 and 4. Not hard. What is more difficult is keeping the pulse totally steady for less advanced players from one section to another where the snare lands on 2 and 4 and the cymbals seem accented on the strong beats (not the upbeats), so in a live situation, the time needs to be solid and, in this performance, it's not.

I've always loved piano in rock & pop music. It's because of Ben Folds style of playing that inspired me to seriously take up piano this year at the age of 43. Never stop learning, Never stop challenging yourself. Personal challenges are what makes life an adventure, you can sit on a couch watching TV for a year or you could learn to play an instrument in the same amount of time and that is something no one can take away from you.
Fuck me they are such a really good tight band. Everything is perfect. The bass player sounds like he Bass and guitar. The drummer is hold it all together and Ben is amazing
Thank you for putting this up. I hadn't listened to Ben for years. This just reminded me how much I love this group. Sometimes you need a kick in the ass.
Tempo is all over the place. I’m a drummer and I’m OK with that. It adds to the excitement and tension of the music. So many musicians I play with expect metronomic timekeeping and sometimes that’s OK but for songs like this, the pull in push adds to the live nature of what’s going on.
Ben is such a technical master of music. I did not appreciate that fully until recently. Watching the older stuff, brings back great memories and shows off his technical rock chops.

This girl I worked with not long ago, this song seemed like her (though her name I found out was Sandra)... I always found myself calling her Kate!! I finally had to share this song with her... she laughed... I laughed... she didn't change her name from Sandra, but always says HI back when I say "Hi Kate!" :-)
Shoutouts to Kate who asked me out during work. I would’ve taken your number in hindsight, I was just so taken aback and flustered that you did that. Let’s hope we make the connection and be friends!
Was the audience being paid minimum wage to be there? How can they be so still during this? One woman has her arms folded! I can't keep my head from nodding along to this music!
@Ross Donnan - Sessions at W. 54th St. is a PBS production. The audience is a reflection of that - they were probably instructed to be quiet because it was being recorded for broadcast. This wasn't a typical concert.
Aw, look at Ben, so young. My favorite band from the moment I heard "Battle of Who Could Care Less" in 1997. I was 36, Mr. F would have been 31. A Generation Jones masterpiece to be sure. Have I gone crazy or have the the vocals have been inserted from directly from the record. Why? Also, the intro is almost perfectly in time with the record... then the rest of it moves somewhere between 103 and 104% speed. Weird. It can't have been that bad...
@@steeno861 I can't remember but I think I later lined it up all the vocal parts from the CD with this recording in software. Not all of the CD vocals exist here, only the one's that were needed - and a few more like 1:19.
@@steeno861 Maybe... I'd note the vocals on "Whatever and Ever..." in those parts are very close anyway. (They sound very close when you overlap them and pan them left and right.) Anyway, if you time compress the studio version to 97% you can line up the phrases (the West 54th tempo changes) If you can isolate the vocal and put the two tracks in each ear you can hear either one of two things... 1. copy and paste from the record with a bit of VocAlign or other (I think I saw a demo of that in 2001) 2. The worlds greatest live vocal ever... (with a great doubling effect in just the right spots) The bit that stands out is the bits not used like "Oh I..."
Not necessarily an "error" but anyway. Fun fact (for me) i used to go get free dinner from the Hare Krishnas on campus in the early nineties. I got a Baghavad-Gita from them too, but I'm pretty sure I remember it was a guy who gave it to me, and he made me give them a couple bucks for it. It's still on my shelf, i have to read it one day. This is so perfectly paced. A lot of bands, out of excitement, play their songs a little too fast when they're live. This is perfect.

Most impressive here though, is the vocal harmonies are on point.
