The fact that wet sponges immediately dry out when placed in the nether is honestly more concerning to me, and the fact that Steve can easily tolerate such heat, but not lava
Lava in the nether doesn't cool down, its burning red, meaning air around it is really really hot. Also, lava produces dangerous fumes, so even standing near to it should kill Steve.
He failing, because that's just the energy required to *heat* the water to 100°C, not to *boil* it away... although the boiling actually adds practically a negligible amount on this scale lol
He also fails because he confused weight with density, as he said osmium is the heaviest substance known to man. Osmium is the densest stable element known to man,
The energy needed to also evaporate the water will actually be 350 giga joules of energy not 45 giga joules in total. @@LolO36675 i did the calculations for this but for 65 blocks of water, it works out to around 169 GJ of power (latent heat of vaporization is 2260000 J/kg) also i think furnaces cook in 10 seconds so that would work out to roughly 17 nuclear power plants of power if you were to use the full 135 blocks as in the video it would be roughly twice that amount for all 3 values
If you want to go even further with the insanity, you can use a bottle on a single source block infinite times, thus a single source block of water will weigh infinite tons so a sponge can collect 135 infinite tons and yea I think you can get where I’m going
Something else to consider, placing a wet sponge in the nether will dry it out NEARLY INSTANTLY. even if it took 1 second that would be 15 times more heat than the furnace, OR 45 TIMES MORE POWERFUL THAN A NUCLEAR REACTOR!
For anyone wondering here are the exact calculations: 1 cubic meter of H2O = 1000000 grams of H2O Multiply this by 135 for the 135 blocks that are absorbed Using the formula q=m*C*deltaT we can plug in: The weight: 135000000 g The specific best capacity: 4.181 J/g*C And the change in temperature assuming the reaction takes place at STP (25 C): 100-25=75 C 135000000*4.181*75=4.2363x10^10 J = 42.363 Gigajoules Next we calculate for Watts using the formula Joules/seconds = watts Joules: 42.363 GJ Seconds: 15 seconds 42.363/15 = 2.8242 Gigawatts = 2,824,200,000 Watts of energy P.S. I have my AP chem exam tomorrow, so doing this calculation was just a fun way to test my knowledge of thermochemistry! 😅
Great calculation, however in the video the initial temperature is set at 20C, and the sponge is evaporated completely, so like the other reply mentioned, you also have to calculate the enthalpy of vaporization for 135 tonnes of water

And remember....
It can do that for millions of sponges

For anyone wondering here are the exact calculations:
1 cubic meter of H2O = 1000000 grams of H2O
Multiply this by 135 for the 135 blocks that are absorbed
Using the formula q=m*C*deltaT we can plug in:
The weight: 135000000 g
The specific best capacity: 4.181 J/g*C
And the change in temperature assuming the reaction takes place at STP (25 C): 100-25=75 C
135000000*4.181*75=4.2363x10^10 J = 42.363 Gigajoules
Next we calculate for Watts using the formula Joules/seconds = watts
Joules: 42.363 GJ
Seconds: 15 seconds
42.363/15 = 2.8242 Gigawatts = 2,824,200,000 Watts of energy
P.S. I have my AP chem exam tomorrow, so doing this calculation was just a fun way to test my knowledge of thermochemistry! 😅
For boiling, dont’t we take latent heat of vaporization
Great calculation, however in the video the initial temperature is set at 20C, and the sponge is evaporated completely, so like the other reply mentioned, you also have to calculate the enthalpy of vaporization for 135 tonnes of water
In addition, don't forget there are significant figures in this problem, and the units for the efficiency for the furnance is in Gigawatts/second, or watts/second
