Small world! I was up in Sidney and remember this theme music often playing on 22 when I got home from school. My mom or grandma probably had it on for noise.
My mom watched this show when I was a real little kid. It along with Days Of Our Lives and the Young And The Restless. By the time I was 7 years old, she stopped watching soap operas.
This soap had pretty good actors and actresses. The most recognizable were Robin Wright Penn, A Martinez, Marcy Walker, Lane Davies and Nicholas Coster.
Taking into considering where the person who posted the clip resides, "Santa Barbara" probably aired in Spain two years after the original airing in the U.S. The logo before the end credits, Antena 3 Televisión, is a television network based in Madrid, Spain.
NBC Daytime had a strong Daytime Line-Up back in the 80's $ale of the Century with the late Jim Perry of Card Sharks and Former Miss USA Summer Bartholomew, Wheel of Fortune Daytime with Pat Sajak & Vanna White (Rolf Benirschke took over from January-June of '89), The Original SCRABBLE with Former Wheel of Fortune Host Chuck Woolery, Super Password with the late Bert Convy, Classic Concentration with the late Alex Trebek of High Rollers and the revived JEOPARDY!, Win, Lose or Draw Daytime with Game Show Queen Vicki Lawrence of The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family, Days of our Lives, Another World and Santa Barbara and now, what does NBC Daytime have? Days of our Lives and 4 Hours of TODAY God I miss the 80's
I think that part of the reason this show did not survive had to do with backstage problems, not the ratings i. e. Bridget and Jerome Dobson's long-standing feud with NBC. That whole fiasco was what put the nail in the coffin for this show and it's really too bad, since they won many awards including several daytime emmys for best daytime drama and writing.
SANTA BARBARA HAD BEEN THRU 3 TIME SLOTS ON WBZ TV 4 IN BOSTON: 1) WEEKDAYS AT 3:00 PM 2) WEEKDAYS AT 10:00 AM AND 3) WEEKDAYS AT 2:00 PM BUT NO ONE IN BOSTON WOULD WANT TO WATCH “SANTA BARBARA”, DESPITE THE SOAP OPERA WINNING A DAYTIME EMMY. THE SHOW WAS CANCELLED IN 1992 AFTER 8 YEARS. Kenneth Huang. 4/14/24.
I was really too young back then to have taken interest in Santa Barbara, but I don't know what kind of ratings it got on WBZ. It must have done better than Another World did in Boston. WBZ didn't even air AW from 1983 onward as it was NBC's lowest-rated soap by the start of that year (following the cancelation of The Doctors and Texas). I wouldn't rule out there being any avid followers of SB in this market, though. If I knew people who watched Loving (ABC's lowest-rated soap from 1989 to 1995) in the Boston area, there were definitely SB fans. P.S., there's no need to type all in caps. It makes it look like you are yelling. Come on, it's 2024. You should know this.
Some of that could be because the Dobsons were kicked off the production for several years. They were eventually allowed to return, but despite this the show never recovered.
The ever controversial Jill Farren Phelps was the executive producer at the time this episode was made (between December 1987 and March 1990). Ironically the show's Nielsen ratings hit their peak during her tenure, with a 4.9 rating in 1987-88 (4,341,400 households, 10th out of 12 daytime soaps) and a 4.8 rating in 1988-89 (4,339,200 households, 10th out of 13 daytime soaps), and the show won three consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series (1988, 1989, 1990).
SB was a huge ratings success internationally. The way I understand it is that I New World Television was making bank on SB in foreign markets but wasn't giving any $$ to NBC. That coupled with the backstage drama between show creators, The Dobson's, and NBC wanting more creative control (as usual), and ratings did slip. In the end, Santa Barbara could've been saved and easily gotten those viewers back. They had Pamela K. Long as the new HW, Paul Rauch as EP, and The Dobson's had the creative control that made SB so special. I have yet to forgive NBC for causing the Denise of SB way too soon
And this was after Jon Lindstrom who played Mark McCormick left the show because he was only on there for a year because I didn't see his name on the credits.
Whenever I heard this playing, I knew I'd be watching Ducktales next! My mom always watched this show at 3pm on WKEF 22 Dayton, Ohio.
Lmao!! I'd actually would watch SB cus i knew they'd show duck tales right after. Oh the good ol days of television

The show's theme music is so catchy.

The German version called California Clan also had this view as well. I remember seeing Barbel Schafer during the credits on the left.
Makes me want to just go to SB, if only to walk along State Street.
Me too Tuchech Stone.

And now no Days of our Lives anymore even.
@Restlessi I think the longer credits would usually be run on a Friday.
Great TV Series!

If I were them, I would've taken the show to Fox.

my grandmother, used watch this show .
My mother, used to this show
This show was sooooo good from 84 to 88 then became boring!!!!!
Same with all 80 soaps.. After 89 90 they lost it

That’s because the Dobsons were locked out of the studio. JFP aka soap killer took over. The Dobsons eventually returned but it was never the same.
Closing in 1989
Santa Barbara: it’ll excite you!
and has it been posted on youtube?

I think that was before A Martinez moved on to L.A. Law.
