    Thank you so much! The screw driver trick did not work for me but I was able to replace the capacitor by myself with no previous HVAC experience. I ordered the capacitor, some electrician gloves, and an insulated screwdriver from Amazon. It took about 30 minutes to change and worked the first time. I cannot thank you enough!

    The screwdriver trick to get my fan running just saved my family from another almost 100 degree day until having a professional come look at my unit. Considering I have a 4 month old, I’m sure you can imagine how relieved we were to have a temporary fix! Thank you!

    Thank you, Kent, the screwdriver got my fan spinning and I thought holy shit that worked. 45 minutes later the system shut down again. I then proceeded to take the AC compressor panel off and took a look at the wiring configuration. I took photos of the wire configuration to reference and remember where the wires connect once I purchase a new capacitor. Temperature is gaining speed currently at 84* I couldn't wait to purchase online. So I made my way to Ace Hardware and was promptly directed to the section where I could find the capacitor required for my unit that cost a little more than online but since it was Saturday and the cost of an AC tech coming out on the weekend was elevated I was happy to pay the extra cost. I got back home and started to assemble the capacitor and after it looked like it was assembled correctly, I turned the switch on the panel and the unit started working and continued to work. Awesome Victory today, Thank you.

    In an emergency, if your fan is not spinning and has resistance turning freely, a huge trick is penetrant oil, cut the power pull the fan Motor off leave the grill on, flip it upside down, push the rubber seal up on the dust cover, try not to damage it,add some oil to the shaft, let it soke for about 5 minutes, notice the fan spinning freely now reattach..I'm sure this will get you through until you get a new motor if this is the case.

    Great video, very helpful! BUT! You mentioned spinning the fan clockwise, and mine are both counterclockwise. If you look through the vents at the top at the fan motor it will indicate a rotation direction - make sure you look at this. The air should be drawn upward through the coils. For mine, spinning clockwise drew the air downward.

    The Screwdriver trick worked once for me, but not after that. However I had regular house fan that was wide enough to put over the top of the unit which I used to blow into the unit. This actually also started the fan blades to move in the AC unit and once it moved fast enough the AC unit fan started working on its own for at least that on/off cycle. So that is an alternative method to try if the screwdriver push is not enough. The added benefit though is that if it is dry outside, you can just leave the house fan on top of the unit while you are waiting for your capacitor to arrive. Since it is blowing continuously it should allow the AC fan unit to turn when the thermostat in your house causes it to need to turn back on.

  • @deafmute420_9
    @deafmute420_9 2 місяці тому +1

    your original cap was a 45 + 5 and you installed a 40 + 5. It'll work but might cause problems with your compressor in the future. also putting in the fuses while there is a cool on signal going to your unit could have fried those fuses. the proper way to do that is make sure the thermostat is off, reinstall the fuses and flip the breaker to the on position, then you can use the contactor switch next to your capacitor to test the unit. 45 + 5 means its a dual capacitor (two in one unit) the 45 is for your compressor and the 5 is for the fan motor and they represent the microfarad rating.

    I actually replaced the capacitor months ago but it turned out being the AC switch inside next to the capacitor. Just woke up from a nap and the house was 81 degrees, turned the thermostat off for a few minutes, it turned back on but still hot air coming from vents, walked outside to the the condenser and I heard a low hum, put my hand on the cage and I could tell the hum was coming from the compressor but the fan blades were still. I kicked it, pulled the quick disconnect and nothing. Reached down for a thin twig and pushed the fan blade and it started spinning but still thought, it was running much quieter than normal. Cool air coming out of vents for now but I guess I will slap the old good capacitor back on. Strange indeed. Anyways those switches are single and double poles, they’re usually In stock at ACE hardware and you can use a double pole switch as a single if that’s all you can find. Don’t pay a tech. If I can do it. You can too. Feels amazing when you can do it yourself. I should clean the unit as well, I think mine may be clogged. About to go out there now before the mosquitos come out but I’m cooling the house down first to 72

    While watching your video I noticed that you replaced your old 45/5 uF capacitor with a 40/5 uF capacitor. You need to correct this mistake. This compressor in this case needs a 45 uF capacitor to start and run correctly. The compressor is already running below the value of that which is considered permissible by most hvac technicians which is 10%. (45 x 10% =4.5 45 - 4.5 = 40.5uF) It's definitely below the 6% tolerance stated on the new capacitor. If you continue to run this cap, sometime in the future your compressor will not start up. Not only this, but the run windings on the compressor are running extra hot because the start (also called auxiliary) windings are not running at their full potential because of the under sized capacitor. By the way the 5 uF (which is for the fan start windings) is correct. Hope this helps.

    The original cap was a 45/5 MF, and the one you bought was a 40/5, it will work, but will put more stress on the compressor, eventually causing it to lock up and fail. 5MF make a huge difference when it comes to no AC, I ain't a tech, but my friend has over 10years experience. And I showed him this video

    I poured water on my blade to jump start the spinning. It worked but the next day, no spinning. No choice but to get a new capacitor. Luckily I didn’t misdiagnosis this as a burnt out fan motor. And yes, I too forgot to disinfect the drain hose.

    The best way to open these screws is with the power tool' mount for all kinds of bits. It'll open it very quickly.

    Thank you so much sir. Its summer and my a/c stopped working. It gets to about 91 degrees Fahrenheit out here in Stockton, Ca. It got really hot inside the house, and I didn't have the money to hire an ac repair man. Your video helped me fix my ac, so I won't have to endure this crazy heat. Thanks again.

    Thank you so much for this. This video was the first thing that came up when I searched for A/C Fan Not Spinning last night and I knew it was the same problem when I tried spinning it with a screwdriver. I went to ACE today and got the capacitor I needed, and it's already fixed!

    Thank you so much! I was looking for a contractor to install a new AC and came across your video. For now, spinning the blades is working. If they stop again, I know what to do :) Buy and change the piece as shown in the video! Love saving money when I can :)
