    The Nokton 40mm 1.4 and Nokton 35mm 1.4 are almost the same size and unless you look at the numbers they appear near identical. Nokton Classic Voigtlander lenses offer a great performance/ value ratio in addition to that classic voigtlander lens rendering. This video covers the Price, Size, Image Quality, SC vs MC.. + example photos (35mm + 40mm Portraits). My first Leica M mount lens was the Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 MC and years later I also bought the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f/1.4 MC. I use both lenses on my Leica M6, Leica M3, Leica M2 for 35mm film portraits and on the Leica CL mirrorless and Leica M240 too for digital 40mm + 35mm lens photography.

    I love the 35mm 1.4 SC. It's permanently glued to my camera. There is a signature red gem like flare when shooting directly into a light source. You have a example photo 5:18 into the video lower right corner. I love the bubble bokeh and it makes the out of focus background look like a painting. It sharpens up nicely past 5.6. Add on a close focus adapter and I have a all around lens. Love it.

    Thanks for this comparison, just what I was looking for! I'm actually in the process of doing some measurements and test shots of how the Nokton 40/1.4 compares to the 35mm framelines on my newly acquired Leica M4-P, whether it works like that or if I'd rather switch to the 35/1.4. I don't like the guesstimating part, but from what I read online the difference should be minor. Fingers crossed!

    Really interesting review, thank you. I have the 40mm SC version and use it on Fuji bodies. I already have some great Fuji portrait lenses, including the 35 and 56, but wanted something to give a different look to black and white portraits. The 40mm SC used with Fuji Acros film simulation gives a wonderful, classic Hollywood portrait look straight out of the camera. I don't shoot film, but the combination of the Nokton 40 SC plus the Fuji film sim makes me feel like a film shooter. 😁

      Thanks Greysurfer, I too have a Fuji body and have just bought the 35mm 1.4 SC. I opted for 35mm to give a standard 50mm full frame equivalent field of view. My logic for the SC version is that Fuji have Velvia simulation to give high colour if I need it and of course can be tweaked in post if required and the SC lens will give more muted tones as standard and as you say great monochrome. I hope this logic works out because the lens should arrive today!

    I had the 40mm f1.4 for Leica M8 and was fantastic. BTW, as far as I know, in the M6 the 35mm framelines is equivalent truly to a 40mm for "conservative approach" having more space on frames.
    If you use the 35mm framelines on the M6 with the 40mm you will have perfect match composing at least, a 1m or so (not sure at close range). But you should modify the mount for that.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Red Grave, excellent information from you again, thank you!! Do you know if the same holds true with all later M models and for me particularly for the earlier M4-P? I use my M4Ps more. ..yes I should have mentioned on the M8! Thanks for checking out the video. Matt

      @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom AFAIK it should be the same with all the 0.72 magnification viewfinders. If you can borrow an M10 you can try it by yourself in an instant (or do a test roll with the M6 and develop yourself). With the M8 I just put a piece of paper in the frame selector for "jamming" the framelines on 35mm and was VERY precise and even more comfortable to look at, thanks to the strange magnification on the M8 VF. You're welcome, pal! ;)

    Very well done.
    I have for a long time the 35mm f1.4 and enjoy very much its imperfections.
    Combined with the imperfect c sonnar 50mm f1.5 they make a killer combo.
    I thought of adding the c biogon 35mm f2.8 to the mix for balance 😀, but having the already sharp as hell biogon 25mm makes it a tough decision , buying only for size? Hmmmm

    Even at f. 1.5 and with its compactness this lens competes with the Summicron ASPH at f. 2. Great lens!! My only regret is that Voigtlander removed the small physical red dot/dome on the lens itself which was present on the previous lenses.

    Oh Matt, I'm still trying to get my head around this. I think I've told you before, I have the Minolta 40mm f2.8 but I would like something faster for low light photography. That's if we're ever allowed out to carry out night time low light photography! So my dilemma is caused by price! the 40mm f1.4 is a relative bargain & the 35mm f1.4 seams like a rip off in comparison. BUT, sometime in the not too distant future I'd like to treat myself to an M9 Monochrom. Which if I do I really ought to bite the bullet & buy the 35 rather than the 40mm. Doh it's très compliqué. 👍

    Stumbled onto your videos as I'm reacquainting myself with my old M9. For more of a Portra look (like you have in some of your early blog posts) would that be easier to achieve on the M9 with the single coated version of one of these lenses or are you better off with the multi coated and desaturating the colors in post? Love the M9 but straight out of camera the files tend to be pretty contrasty and slide film like, and I'm going for a more muted, negative film look.

Thinking about picking up a digital body because of a second child coming and don't think I could keep funding film at the moment. Anyways, I want to buy a body that I could still use the M glass and I plan to scan negatives with it. Interesting video - I don't have any of those lenses but well done review. You mention it at 4:58 of your video - the typical M-mount rangefinder bokeh. I never found out why most of those lenses have the double-circle bokeh circle and not just a smooth single one. There are exemptions though - CV 35/1.2 II and Leica 50/1.5 LTM Summarit have a smooth single circle bokeh. What affects it, do you know? I am personally not a big fan of the double circle bokeh. This excluded 40 mm rangefinder lenses for me so far because they all seem to have it (not sure if the CV 40/1.2 also has it).

      Zach B yes I hear the Zeiss 2.8 is better than the f2. I will try at some point and share if I can. The Nokton 1.4 classic gives you shallow DOF, bokeh, low light potential etc whereas the Zeiss are more just sharp. They give different rendering. Compare your work to my 1.4 images here but also the 1.2 video and 2.5 Skopar video for completeness

    • @ZachBie
      @ZachBie 4 роки тому +2

      Matt Osborne thanks for the response. I had the Voigtlander 35mm f/2.5, it was a good lens, but the filter didn’t match the kit I was building. I shoot black and white and work/travel with Yellow, UV, and Orange filters.
      People say the 43mm filter size on the Zeiss lenses is a strange size and doesn’t fit with a Leica system using (historically) 39mm filters. But the Zeiss designers built their system separately from the Leica lenses.
      The 43mm filter works perfectly as It was intended: 35/2 or f/2.8, 50/2, and 85/4 Zeiss lens kit. Great, sharp, flare-resistant, small-ish lenses.
      I think that I will just stick with the Zeiss 35mm f/2 lens as I don’t really shoot in low light often enough to need anything faster. If I am shooting a 2 or 3 lens kit, I like them to have a similar rendering so when I have photos from the event/trip/project next to each other, they feel like they go together.
      That’s why I like to pair the Zeiss 50mm f/1.5 with the Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 and not the 35mm f/2.8, as the 35mm is just too sharp and gives a different look to my eye. I almost feel like the 50/1.5 and 28/2.8 were meant to go together as they share the same filter size, and while they both make beautiful images, they aren’t as technically “perfect” as the 35/2.8 and 50/2.

      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  4 роки тому +2

    40 is very bad deal for me, i cant buy 50 anymore if i has 40. I prefer 50, 21 fast lens and 28-35 pancake class

    Boy oh boy i don't even know how many versions there are of this obnoxious lens! Mine looks completely different than that in your review... one with very very strange looking lens hood on screw, heavy as a brick, big with COMPLETELY useless focal metering, and the image... my GOD the image is so blurry at any apertures, with hateful nervous bokeh, plenty of purple fringing, tons of vignetting, ABSOLUTE lack of sharpness no matter what, TOTALY impossible to use with zone focusing technique and with price tag of 600+ Euro! I hate this lens more than the words can describe it!

      It sounds like you have a lens designed for a different camera but with the same name.
