Hi Matt, the dots at 2:33 are reflections of the pixels on your camera sensor. This can occur when light directly hits the lens and the sensor behind when the photo is taken. The micro lenses on top of the pixels back-scatter the light which can reflect on the back lens element and hit the sensor again. Would be interesting to have the CV 40/1.2 compared with the new CV 50/1.2 M lens. Biggest advantage for me I could see from the 40 mm FL is that I could still use it without external viewfinder on my M3. I am using the CV 35/1.2 II so far instead but always on my M6 instead, never on my M3.

Thanks, Matt. I just ordered this lens for use on my Nikon Zf. I’m already using the Voigtlander 28/1.5 and 15/4.5 with the TTArtisan "chipped" adapter. This maintains the camera's "rangefinder" and green box focus indicators.

I have had the 40mm f/1.2 for a few years now. I have come to like it a lot on an M240. It seems to have very nice color on this camera. I shoot mostly at mid f-stops like f/5.6 and the color and IQ are good there. Sharp but not eye bleeding. Yes, it is a good lens to have I agree with your review.

Voigtlander made the 40mm popular and thx to them for that. This one seems to be a good compromise with old look full opened and getting high sharp’esss and contrast buy closing it starting at f2.8 so the best of the 2 worlds. About the differences between f1.4 and f1.2, I would say that the f1.4 is better for the M and with a Leica SL the f1.2 is of course better dimensionned. As I am Nikon user and just bought the Z version following this video. So Matt again you cost me a lot !!! Fortunately I was able to find it at good price at 660€ in France which is I think a good bargain. I am impatient to receive it for mounting it on my Zf with its ability of using manual lenses on it.

I use the 40 f1.2 on a Sony and it’s a very nice lens. I haven’t used it extensively, because of our lockdown. Now that’s over I will be using it more. Voigtlander make a close focus adapter for the Sony, which means that its Leica mount lenses can be just that shade more versatile. Anyway, I have appreciated your video, because it shows its potential.

Interesting video - wouldn't previously have considered this lens (I have the 40 Summicron) but now will. When you do comparison shots (eg the 40mm 1.2 vs 1.4) at each aperture it would be useful to show the result split-screen rather than consecutively - easier to evaluate that way.

Yes, very useful video. However, instead, I'd love to see you test the Leica T (not TL, not T2) with the 40mm f1.4 (not the 1.2). Why? The T, with firmware 1.4 or higher installed, is a sleeper hit. Together with the Nokton f1.4 I'd think they'd make for a terrific portable quality combination. Nice review. I use both the 40mm 1.2 and 50mm 1.2 and if you don't mind the extra 10mm, I reckon the 50mm is nicer. It's got more pleasing bokeh in low light and in dark environments with bright light sources (the 40mm produces "onion rings"). For B/W on film I seem to get better contrast on the 50mm too.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt, with the 1.5 crop factor of the cl I can see how the 40 would work better for you. I almost exclusively work with fx sensors. I've put a few lenses on a Fuji camera in the past but while results were ok, they had nothing to do with fx results. That said, I still prefer 4x5 b/w film over anything digital. I use this lens on my Nikon Z7. Sharp even wide open at F1.2. Very good subject separation. Focus shift is negligible. Pleasant bokeh. Wide open, contrast is decent, a cross between SONNAR and PLANAR look. Stopped down it gets very contrasty. Small size and balance well for mirrorless cameras. All in all, not as perfect as a big & modern lens like Sigma 40 F1.2, but at 3.8x times less weight, it’s great for people who wish to carry less. So far two AF adapters are available for Z cameras, making focusing a breeze.

    I’ve been trying to like the 35-50mm fov . I love your creative look with 50mm . I have a Nikkor 55 f/1.2 that I love . I have acquired a 65mm from Sigma and a 90 and like both . 55-65 just feels nice and a 90 is just so easy.
As I start ( because I am going to start collecting M glass ) into the Leica world , I am going to start with Voigtlander lenses.
I like Flickr images from the 50mm f/1.2 the best and I’ve tried like hell to avoid that focal length. I believe I work subconsciously to have a different look.
I shoot a ton with 28mm and lately with 65 . Tweener focal lengths and I feel 40 is that . 40 is so normal I’ve been struggling with it and being creative. I have the Sigma Art 40mm for Nikon . I use it for video mostly and like it best for small room interviews for my tight shot and 28 as a wide .
You seemed to give better life to a 40 than I’ve seen most do but it still did not feel good except for the closer shots indoors.
I think I like the attributes of this lens but I liked the Flickr photos shot with the 35 f/1.2 and 50 f/1.2 better .
Thanks for this awesome review and love your work .

Awesome review and I will own this lens . They make it in the VM mount and Nikon Z and Sony E . I have the VM adapter for both mounts and my Sony is a close focus one so I’ll probably get the VM mount.
From testing against the Sony E the VM had softer looking bokeh and a nicer looking image rendering. Maybe microcontrast? Not sure but looked nicer even shot on the Sony body adapted .

Any recommendations for reasonably priced third party lens hoods for this one? Preferably non vented and round, shallow ish mostly for protection - I'd want something that clips on on the outside since I want to use filters sometimes. The Voigtländer hoods are just ridiculously expensive for a little piece of metal to clip on..
I bought this lens to adapt to my Fuji X-T5 and absolutely loving it next to my ZF Zeiss 50mm f1.4 - the user experience and feel in the hand of these Cosina made lenses is just absolutely outstanding, and they've got brilliant optical character that pairs great with Fuji's film simulation features to create some really unique out-of-camera results.

I shoot all/any digital cameras in B&W preview mode but record RAW. I need to visualise in B&W. I then just apply my MrLeica Camera X B&W preset to all images once imported to LR and that is most the work done.

I’ve not tried the 35mm v3. The v2 to my eyes gives a different look. Still nice but different. The 40 & 50 get the rave reviews, the 35 less so so I think it’s. Not quite the same. Check the 35 Ultron video. I was so impressed I bought a copy after Voigtlander sent me one to test.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom

Completely different. The 1.2 is modern at f2 onwards and super sharp. The 1.4 gives a softer classic rendering.. See my 1.4 video for examples.

Hi Tyler, yes. Set the lens to 0.7m (I think that's correct for the R3a, I forget), then "walk the lens in" to see focus and don't touch the lens. That's what I do.

I love your reviews! You test a lot and I love your photographs. I would love to hear your opinion on the TTArtisan 50mm 1.4 for Leica M cameras.
Now I have the Zeiss Planar 2/50 ZM on my Leica M2. It‘s a fantastic lens. My only problem with it is that it is more like a 45-48mm and so the frame lines does not match the Lens.
Other than that I can really recommend it. but sometimes it drives me nuts 😁
Is the TTArtisan 50 1.4 maybe a good alternative?
