"Pan On The Move"(1972), Its Journey And Impact - A 50th Anniversary Tribute to Dr. Ray Holman.

- The story is about Dr. Ray Holman's composition of "Pan on the Move", the first "own tune" composed by a pan arranger back in 1972, going against the tide of steelbands performing mainly the songs of calypsonians before then. The move eliminated the boundaries/limitations and presented the idea that pannists/arrangers could compose their own music for the instrument, causing a ripple effect in the pan world which gave rise to the likes of Dr. Len "Boogsie" Sharpe composing and arranging his own music, Ken Philmore and several others doing the same. It is a story to cherish and preserve, told by Dr. Ray Holman and Dr. Len "Boogsie" Sharpe themselves. An acoustic performance is also included of the song remade for this documentary, with Ray and Boogsie performing together in this project. Incidentally, during the making of this project, they both received their honorary doctorates from the University of the West Indies. 50 years later the story of this song, and its impact comes alive in this video.

I have always wondered why Ray and Boogsie always came out with their own tunes. Now I understand why they did. Thanks to this clip. My gratitude and thanks to the men and women who help produce and promote this musical video. Long live the steelband of Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹 37:13 37:20 37:21
An excellent production capturing Ray Holman's fundamental humility, his genius and his pioneering efforts against the odds. There are not enough accolades to describe what this man has contributed not only to the progress of pan but also to the human spirit. Thank you Mark.
Thanks and so true.
Great history on how traditonal steelpan music evolved.Congratulations to both gentlemen on their degrees and continued influence in the steel pan fraternity.Thank you for this production 👏🏽
Well produced. Thank you for doing the work and bringing the information to the world. Thank you for your contribution Dr Holman.
Thanks Keon. Hope the information is used by all schools and the global pan community to inspire what we can do. Thanks to Dr Ray Holman for creating that spark which Dr Len “Boogsie” Sharpe continued along with several others. Thankful to these masters.
Great documentary.A history lesson for everyone including me.Thanks and well appreciated .
Thanks Rosalind for the feedback.
OHHH MYYY GAAAWWWWDD, WHAT a magnificent production Mark, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS #DOCUMENTARY! I learned so much, if I said it once I said it a thousand times, pan is my favourite thing about #Triinidad #Carnival, I Love everything about Pan. I hope this is just the beginning and that your'e gonna produce many many more about all our pan Luminaries, and in fact about the history of pan itself. Thanks Mark, well done!
Thanks Darrel for the feedback and really glad you enjoyed and was able to learn about this significant aspect of pan history thanks to the conviction of Dr Ray Holman.
Fitting tribute to a great scholar, gentleman and musician. Dr. Ray Holman is a pioneer. Thanks for taking the initiative, Mark.
Thanks Luke. Indeed. He was removing the boundaries and limits in our mind and entertained and executed the idea of using our own creativity and talent to compose music for the instrument.
What an amazing and well-presented documentary of Dr. Ray Holman's long and distinguished journey with the steel pan. Thank you, Ray, for breaking the glass ceiling and for your humility even in international recognition and success. Our gratitude to all involved in making this fine documentary.
@@julietmcdavid8450 Thanks for your comment.

Thanks so much.
Thank you for creating this important documentary of our master steelpan musicians. Thank you for your passion and dedication to ensuring the our history is not lost to time.
Thanks for your note. So glad this was done with the masters still around to feel appreciated.
Excellent documentary. Well developed and produced. All involved should be proud. Well done, as usual, Mark.
Thanks for the feedback Kwame, hope this is used in all schools and universities with pan.
@@MarkLoquanMusic absolutely!
Mark - As a person who grew up with steelband music and who calls himself a proud pan jumbie, I have utmost respect for what you are doing recording the giants of our current age and preserving our music and arrangements.
This was an incredible documentary that took us through the evolution of pan music from Ray's perspective touching on some of his great performances and of course missing out some. It should form part of our educational curriculum in T&T and for pan lovers everywhere. I cannot wait for the Dr Boogsie version and also that of Andy Narell.
Congratulations again on your work and keep documenting and recording our music so that future generations can look and play Pan in A Minor as arranged by Jit, or either of the the Boogsie and Prof versions of Fire Down Below, the truly wonderful Pan by Storm and Ray's Shaadi - the Wedding. Nuff Respect for what you have done and achieved thus far
Thanks Bryan. Really wish several others were doing this work as there is so much to preserve and document. It does get back to changing a culture that is not oriented to preservation, digitisation, etc, but when captured we see the tremendous value of learning from these masters and capturing our music and history for future use.
Liked the vid. Pan Arts Forever ...."Together WE Aspire, Together We Achieve" Trini's gift from the Creator All Praises to The Most High !
Thanks Denise.
Wow!!!!..Totally loving this!!!!…Something for the archives.
Thanks for the feedback.
Wow ! a nice production .At 75 ,I always say I grew up wit pan and pan grew up with me.This video covered the era ( mid 70’s - early 80’swhen I thought that pan had definately “ turned a corner was taken to a new level and was definately not in danger “ Thanks ,producers 🌴Am not a musician btw !
Thanks for the feedback Olivia.
Marvelous. Thank you
Congrats to Mark for making a wonderful idea a reality! It's a brilliant way to bring Ray's path to Pan On The Move to the public and the larger story of pan, its music and the man who gave Panorama its first original pan music.
Thanks Knolly. 50years later one of his songs out of his rich legacy of music is highlighted with such significant ripple effects.
I can't believe it's 50 years already. I was one of the skeptics as a 16 year old, I needed to hear the tune on the radio to be able to critically judge it from which ever part of the savannah I could breach or storm. But as a two-year veteran playing mas with the "Liff" I appreciated the tune on the road.
Thanks for your comment Steve
@@MarkLoquanMusic I have been celebrating this pioneering work for a long while..more than a decade ago I posted a crude reproduction of Dr Holman and Dr Ken Archer (my UWI batchmate) jamming. ua-cam.com/video/ihkUB-bp3x8/v-deo.html
@@stevemaximay7243 nice version Steve, thanks.
Well done Mark congratulations 👏👏👏👏 blessings.
Thanks Andre. Keep well.
@Mark Loquan Thoroughly enjoyed the version of Pan on the Move at the end.
Excellent production overall. Very informative.
Thanks to all who participated in making this documentary. I enjoyed every minute of it as I was very fortunate to perform the compositions of Dr. Ray Holman, Ray,Dr. Len "Boogsie " Sharpe and the late Ken "Professor" Philmore at previous panorama competitions.
This information should be shared at schools (MoE Audio Visual Unit) .
Steel Orchestras should dedicate a day/night to view this production which could even encourage their management to gather their history and music from the past to document their story.
Thanks for the feedback Curtis. Appreciated. A lot of original music to be thankful to the masters for.
@@MarkLoquanMusic Yes indeed. I want take this time to say thank you for your dedicated service to music beyond Trinidad and Tobago. Your vision for a music literacy trust to document the stories and music from the past and steel orchestras/musicians is a Godsend. Love in Pan.
@@curtismarcelle8064 Much appreciated.

Thanks for producing this wonderful tribute to my favourite part of our culture. This should form part of the school curriculum. Every steelband should also play this at the start of their training. Jamela.
Thanks for the comment. Agreed.
A very informative production Mark. It raised many pores on my body because of being able to relate to those times in the pan history. As many, I fell in love with the steel pan after hearing the first note at a very young age. I migrated in '78 but I still have the tenor that I first played in a panorama in the 60's. I have a double tenor also that was personally made for me in 2015. Power to the steel pan and power to the players and great innovators. Blessingz to you for the great video. Thank you. 🙏🏾
Thanks for feedback and comments. Keep playing your pan.
Loved it! Thank you Mark for creating such a great doc! Hope to see more!
Thanks for your feedback.
Brilliant video. I enjoyed it! Congratulations Mark. God's blessings!
Thanks so much Anthea.
Excellent videography and storytelling. it still amazes me to know the fickle and downright silly reasons musical innovation was and still is rejected in this Pat Bishop's God forsaken country.
Thanks for the comment. Pat certainly reminded us all time to appreciate the talent we have. Thanks to pioneers Ray and Boogsie of sticking to their path of creating own music.
Boogie arranged a calypso for Silver Stars to go on Sunday sarenade and played with us in the Hallows. Oh please remember this Mr. Sharpe. 1971
Thanks, Boogsie was an integral part of this history.
Sweet, I remember that year. I had friends as Stowe on seconds playing with Stalif. I played with Solo Harmonites 1972. Mas in May....Thanks Ray and Boogsie.
Thanks for the comment.
