  • We have a ATLAS LATHE H54 10F 28 for review.
    How exciting is that? We know we are excited to have this lathe in our garage machine shop.
    We would love a Monarch lathe or Cincinnati lathe. A Clausing Colchester or Leblonde lathe would do. But for now we are excited to have this lathe by Atlas Press Company in our shop.

    I own several lathes including a modern geared-head Emco... But for some reason, I always enjoy my worn-out 10" Atlas the best... I think it's great that folks have such a passion for these old machines.

    I've got a QC-42 (with the quick change gear assembly) which is a 10" November 1950 lathe. I've also got a 9" horizontal 36" from 1940. It was being sold at an estate from the original owner. He bought it, went to war (WWII) and returned to use it again. I've got the original bill of sale. Really cool.

    The real impressive part about these old machines....the craftsmanship in using these lesser machines to make better more accurate machines makes me shake my head in amazement.

      A machine that rebuilds itself...kind of scary. I love when I get opportunity to tinker on this machine. Thanks for watching!

    I have 2 12 x 54 inche atlas lathes the last was on a cast iron stand and casters and I have forks for my backhoe it went in my garage, but the second no stand I took it completely apart and carried it in my shop in peaces, both have quick change gear boxes that add another 25 lbs,,,both are timken bearing lathes and l have bought 3 6 inch 618 atlas lathes also and a 109,,,l love the atlas lathes. And people realize vintage lathes are the best way to a lathe now as prices rise, l have one 618 that's never been used on display,,, and have almost every attachment for both the 6 and 12 inch with tons of tooling. And have taken them all apart and restored them to like new conditions.

      Wow! That's quite the collection. Must be a magnificent sight. These old machines are great. They sure don't build them like they used too. Thanks for stopping by. Email me some pics. I'd love to see your collection. debtfreehomesteaders@gmail.com

    This machine is a lucky find at a very lucky price! Do take the Time to give it at LEAST a complete take down and cleanup and rebuild!!! BUT you guys SHOULD DO a full Restore on this kind of a machine, Your son will learn a lot from it (you might too😉) and you will safe the Atlas in the long run. Lots help online! Good Luck.

    Nice lathe and nice video! 10F-28 is just the part number for the door. While the 10F lathes do all have power cross feed, that’s not actually what the F stands for. It was just used to designate the latest model. There was a 10D model just before the 10F.

    Nice video. I learned a lot about my lathe. I am 17 and recently purchased an atlas th 54. And I really enjoy it. Mine came with a quick change tool post. I would definitely recommend one.

      I have been thinking about getting a quick change tool post as well. That is awesome that you are 17 and own a lathe just like my 16 year old son owns this one. Keep learning. Keep making!

    Great to see another H54. Just beginning to work on mine, so I really appreciate the opportunity to learn more. MrPete222 has an Atlas Lathe training video set for sale which is excellent. Looking forward to your future videos on the Atlas.

      Yes, I just did the same thing as well... These older Atlas lathes for the money just completely destroy the shit out of all the new Chinese lathes, no comparison...
      Hope you got it up to your standards, I'm sure she won't let you down..I have mine tuned to 0 tolerance(original Timken bearings) incase you wonder

    10F-28 is the part number for that part. Just about every cast part has the part number cast into it. It really helps when looking on eBay and people have parts misidentified; you can swoop down and buy them before other people realize what it is. OOPS....just gave away a secret!

    I am in the process or purchasing a very similar possibly identical lathe. This will be my second old lathe the first being a much larger machine. Let me second what vancroft13 said. The best thing you can do is clean it. My Sidney cone head had so much swarf in the apron that it was totally jammed, One should never use compressed air to clear chips on these old machines. Too many open gears.

    • @Debtfreehomesteaders
      @Debtfreehomesteaders  4 роки тому +1

      I agree on the compressed air. There is still more cleaning to do on this one as well. So fun to play and learn with my son on this machine. Thanks for watching!

    I’m looking at a TH54 right now. However, it just comes with basic tooling and no gears. The gentleman has sent me videos of it running and it’s very clean. Sounds very much like yours.
    I’m not asking what you paid but this gentleman is asking $ 1200. Is that in the ballpark?
    I’m new to hobby milling and something keeps bringing me back to this machine.
    Thanks for any help

    • @Debtfreehomesteaders
      @Debtfreehomesteaders  Рік тому +1

      Sorry the late reply. If it is clean and pending on what tooling comes with it $1000 sounds fair to me. Thanks for watching. Let me know how it turns out.

    Yes, you’ll find it’s 28 inches between centers. I’ve had this same model for nearly 40 years.

  • @georgespangler1517

    Looks like your 10 inch was put on a 12 inch bed,,, the 28 is between centers and the 10 inch was 28 and 12 inch 36..
