  • This is a review of the Getzen Custom Series 3047AFR Trombone, a tenor trombone with a single Axial Flow (Thayer) valve with a rose brass 8.5" bell. A professional level trombone that I picked up very cheaply due to it being sold in dreadful condition.

    I fucking love the trombone. I joined a ska band recently as a trombone player and I've never had more fun playing music in my life and I've been playing music since I was 8

    Can I just say how much I love your videos? I'm personally a trumpet player doing Marching and Jazz Band at the Highschool level, and I love sitting down and tuning into your amazing commentary on different and exotic instruments. You make my day every time you post. I hope you continue to do this for a long while. Thank you :)

    Can you do the pros and cons of dependent rotors vs independent rotors on bass trombones?

    • @ZarkosisSmash
      @ZarkosisSmash 7 років тому +2

      dependent pro: play d or db in first (more agile)
      cons : sound worse when not engaged, less neckpipe

    Thanks for your thoughts Trent. I've played the 3047AFR for quite a while, and it really has grown on me. Like everything it has its moments, but now that i'm used to it I wouldn't want to play something else.

    That's the model horn I had from senior year in high school to about my third year in college. I owned it from 2008 to early 2012 when I traded it in for my current horn which is a Vincent Bach 42AFG with an Edwards nickel slide. The Getzen was a great horn while I had it, but there was something about it that my Bach has that the Getzen lacked and I can't lay my finger on what it was. Anyways, good review! Keep it up!

    I own the same trombone for many years now and have been searching quite a while for the right mouthpiece (and the right leadpipe, new it coms with three leadpipes, but mine only had the #1, so I bought the #2 afterwards for a more even sound in all registers). I ended with 2 mouthpieces that work well on this instrument. The Griego CS5 (Which comes standard by this instrument now, but not with mine, so i had to purchase it afterwards) and an Yamaha Canadian Brass Signature (this mouthpiece is out of production but works really well on this horn).

    I've used my Getzen 3047AFR for the last 4 years, and I've only encountered very small issues while using it in orchestral playing. I've noticed that my sound is noticeably "darker" compared to my section mates who have yellow brass bells on their horns. The challenge that I've come across is making my sound brighter. It's great for jazz, but given that I'm more of an orchestral trombonist, I've decided to order an Edwards T350-E with the yellow brass bell.

    I am investigating this horn because I recently acquired its SMALL-bore cousin, the Getzen Custom 3508R. It is absolutely the most sonorous and free-blowing small-bore trombone I've ever tried, and it has me wondering whether its Edwards or Getzen .547 equivalant would perform similarly. From your evaluation of the 3047AFR, it sounds like the answer is no for the Getzen. Maybe the 3508's nickel outer slide is a key difference.

  • @ZarkosisSmash

    I very much hate Getzen horns. Everything is way to heavy in weight, the slide is too heavy as you stated, and the axial valve plays worse than the Edwards counterpart. The bells are all soldered beads, which I do not like. All of these problems are avoided with the Edwards lineup, as you can choose differently from the Getzen custom series. I played these horns side by side at TMEA, I was expecting the custom series Getzens to play well compared to their normal professional line but I felt like it was somehow worse than the horns I already knew I disliked. I was expecting to hate the Edwards horns as they are part of Getzen and I already had a great distaste for Getzens from playing on my friends 1047fr's and 1047f's. But I was pleasantly surprised by the Edwards, even more so than the Raths and Shires I played on. (Sorry if this turned into a Edwards fanboy post)
    TLDR: Getzen horns are too heavy, Edwards are much better playing and provide more options to match the player :D

    • @JuggernautHunter02
      @JuggernautHunter02 7 років тому

      Zarkosis Smash Honestly, it's only a problem if you're used to lighter horns. I'm used to my Getzen, it's been through three years of marching with me (the exact same model as the one in the video if I'm not mistaken, they both share the thayer valve)

    • @ZarkosisSmash
      @ZarkosisSmash 7 років тому

      I am used to medium to heavy weight horns. I play on a Holton-160 as my main horn for orchestral settings, and its a much heavier horn than a horn like a Bach-42 or a Conn-88h in bell thickness and much larger in diameter. I also play a heavyweight copper belled Conn 12h for jazz settings. But I feel like the Getzens are too heavy and don't respond as well as they could if they were perhaps a bit lighter in gauge (or did not contain a soldered rim). The only people I've spoken to who love their Getzens seem to dislike the normal Bach-42 or Conn-88h or even my Holton- so perhaps you are correct that I'm just not used to it. But in my humble opinion I feel like these horns are not ideal for a professional orchestral setting or any other setting for that matter. Even the eastman trombones play better than the getzens eterna line. The custom line is slightly better, but overall the slide is too heavy, the tuning slides are too thick and damper the resonance, and the bell itself doesn't project well. ( Sorry for hating on your horn D: I apologize )

    • @ZarkosisSmash
      @ZarkosisSmash 7 років тому

      I would also like to point out that very few professionals play Getzens (and probably for similar reasons to mine), the only one that comes to my mind is Ian Bousfield- but his horn is custom made/designed by Christian Griego therefore it is basically an Edwards(Christian runs the shop).

    • @JuggernautHunter02
      @JuggernautHunter02 7 років тому

      Hahah, no biggie. Everyone has their horn preferences. I'm just extremely accustomed to mine as it's my first horn. I'm not nearly a professional, but my horn has carried me quite far. I'm only a junior in high school after all, and I got mine around 7th grade. My private instructor recommended it to me

    Mr Hamilton, i totally not agree with your oppinion about this great instrument. I played several different a-brand trombones for the last years, kings, courtois, Conn and must say that i like the Getzen 3047afr more and find it a magnificent brilliant horn with a great large orchestral sound. It is the player who makes the tone and from what i hear of your tone it isnt that great at all.
