  • For our latest episode of "Box Breaks With Bruce", we open up a near complete box of 1999-00 OPC Chrome Hockey Cards, as well as some extra packs of Overtime to make up for the missing packs. With two refractors per box on average and some relatively sought after insert and high number base subset cards, this is sure to be an interesting time.
This 22 year old product is all about those rainbow refractor cards. It features a checklist full of current stars, and upcoming rookies from the CHL, as well as refractor parallels of every set and subset! But the big question is, how will we do with only a near-complete box, and will we get both promised refractors by the average? You know how to find out!
Also, don't forget to answer our viewer engagement question for this episode in the comments down below as you may be featured in our next episode's "Comment Shout-Out Portion". Our viewer engagement question is: "Have you ever had any 'last pack luck'?" I want to hear about it, "last pack luck" stories are some of my favorites!
Note: the first half of the break I do have a bit of difficulty with the high shine on the cards and the light source battling each other on camera but more or less sort it out at the mid-way mark.

    A backwards last pack.
So, in the late 90's, I got back into collecting hockey cards.
I was buying retail as I did not know about hobby boxes or Card Stores.
After finding an LCS, the owner told me (on one of my many visits) that if I ever saw 1 pack left in an open box, buy it.
About a year later I popped into a convenience store to pick up some Tic Tacs (was going to a meeting right away), and I saw a bunch of retail boxes (all 99-00). One box had a single pack in it, so I grabbed it right away. It was Upper Deck Ultimate Victory, which didn't really interest me a lot (think it was $2.99).
Got back to my car and did my big 1 pack rip, and there was a Maurice Richard - A Piece of History - 500 Goal Club card (these have been inserted for 20 plus years in UD) with an R in black marker on the front!
My jaw dropped, and I think I even yelled in excitement. Still have it. Value is about $300. Great advice, odd luck, and the best 3 bucks I ever spent!

I did so like this set back then, but you are right. The year before was a better set. I am very jealous that you hit that Bourque refractor. I have quite a few base refractors and a All Topps Alfredson refractor from this if I remember correctly. I think there were different Moments variants that were short printed. But I could be thinking of something else.
Probably my best "last pack luck" would have been UD 2020-21 Series 2. My second box I opened was kind of lack luster and while the YGs were decent they were nothing special. Then the last pack I hit a Kirill YG. I am sure I've had others but that's the first that came to mind.
    Another great video.
