As a puerto rican I feel super proud for you reviewing this band from PR. They were a salsa group composed from the best singers and musicians from another salsa groups. They made this group to tour around the world meanwhile each one of the keep composing music and recording their projects and albums.

Hector Lavoe was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico and his influence was Chuito el de Bayamon. A singer that was known as an improviser. And Hector took that into his style.
Las características de la voz de Lavoe eran su nasalidad natural, que no fingía al cantar. Otro aspecto era el brillo en su voz y lo limpia que era: no sonaba rasposa ni opaca. Sumado a eso, poseía una gran fuerza para cantar, que le imprimía un carácter fuerte a sus interpretaciones. Tenía también un manejo bastante eficiente de su registro vocal, el cual se extendía desde el la2 (como se aprecia en algunas versiones en vivo de «La Murga de Panamá», mientras hacía la melodía de los trombones), hasta el la4 (que se puede apreciar en el bolero «Tanto como ayer» y «La retirada»).[74]Tenía un registro de tenor común, de dos octavas, que comprende entre "la2" y "la4", con una tesitura que le facilitaba ejecutar sus agudos. También poseía una dicción que le daba la cualidad de cantar fraseo extenso y rápido con mucha claridad y con buena emisión, lo cual le permitía al oyente entender lo que estaba cantando.

I’m an Anglo-American who grew up learning Spanish, and I’m also a singer. It wasn’t until I was maybe 21 that I was exposed to salsa, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I became totally hooked and I’ve never looked back. Celia and Hector were two of my first idols in the music. Cosa Nuestra is one my favorite albums that he did with Willie Colón. Celia also did a few records with Willie. Their version of the Latin American classic “Cucurrucucú Paloma” is just spectacular. I would also highly encourage you to check some of the great Cuban singers such as Beny Moré...you can’t go wrong with Beny. He was kind of the Frank Sinatra of Cuba. Another great from recent years is Mayito Rivera. Check out a video of him singing “Soy todo”, with Los Van Van, probably the most popular post-revolution Cuban band. Seeing you experience this and the Celia video was such a delight. Seeing you tap into the joy for life that this music is all about is so wonderful, and it really brought me back to that moment when I first experienced that feeling, like your whole body is going to burst into flames....in the best possible way hahaha. Héctor Lavoe is a legend. Great performance outstanding voice with no filters. All natural.
Something I found very nice from the band: they used french words. At 6:30 you can ear hector saying "chantez". That means sing. At the end of the song he also say "merci". It's very nice to hear singers making an effort to learn some words of your country. As a Frenchman I was shocked when I heard this ! Hector lavoe. Le chanteur des chanteurs! The Fania All-Stars are the legends of Salsa. This was a concert in Africa. They also had one in Yankee Stadium. Please create a Hector Lavoe radio station on Pandora and you will hear the greatest of Salsa. Hector Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Cheo Feliciano, Celia Cruz, Ray Barreto, Larry Harlow, Raphy Leavit, Mongo Santamaría, Bobby Cruz, Willie Colon, Richie Ray and many more that I am missing.

Chorus are some of the biggest salsa singers. Santitos Colon. Ismael Miranda. Cheo Feliciano. The congas is Ray Barreto. Cowbell is Roberto Roena who founded Apollo sound orchestra. Some of these great performers started their own careers and earned Grammys and Latin Grammys.
These artists where ahead of their time as far as composition and rhythm. Their songs were characterized for been “street songs”. Barrio songs. They have a big Cuban/NY/PR influence.
Don’t forget that Roberto Roena was part of Cortijo y Su Combo and El Gran Combo one of the most important bands of Puerto Rico.

I just so happened to come across this, very very nice to see you do this. My father was a veteran member (musician and producer) of the Fania orchestra for decades and specifically hector’s band... He was very close in our family... Yes I believe this is a tour they did overseas.... The history of Fania and all of these beautiful artists are magical.... While they were all a beautiful representation of different vibrant cultures, the common denominator was the love and passion for the art of music and the people!!!

Héctor was the best and this music during that era, it was the best. Hector could sing anything and there has never been anyone quite like him and he could improvise a song on the spot. The Fania All Star was a band that created so much talent. All those guys in that band had their own unique talent and their own band. Those were the best of times.
And you had all this rythm boom there in New York overseeing it for years. Hector LaVoe, a top legend.
