Why We Don't Teach Readings (yet!)
As mentioned in the introduction video to this series ( ua-cam.com/video/RKWrWRFyfYo/v-deo.html ), it is my philosophy that it is a WASTE OF TIME to learn the readings for each kanji in isolation. I explain WHY in that video.
To learn how to read kanji, I think it is best to learn WORDS that contain that kanji in the context of SENTENCES. We WILL be doing that in this series, after learning the meanings and writings for the 118 kanji in the JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 tests.
So fear not! You WILL be learning how to read them in the near future. 😊

I got 4/5 right on the quiz! I’m excited because I want to be good enough at writing kanji to discern Nihongo at a proficient level.

These are very helpful! Wish i had these when I started! Sadly I'm ahead of these in my kanji learning but I've been watching them all anyway to help expand my way of think of them and drill them into my mind a bit deeper.

These videos are great. Although I am already familiar with these kanji, I'm taking the opportunity to refresh my knowledge of the stroke order. I also find the history bit very interesting. Thanks so much for these.

I love this series a lot, it’s definitely useful for my particular learning style. One critique/request i have, though, is that I wish you would include the Japanese word for each concept, even if it’s just saying or showing it once. As a complete beginner, I think that would help me begin writing that neural pathway that I could reference later when learning the word officially.

    • @ToKiniAndy

We will be covering the Japanese words for each and every one of these after we learn the meanings for the first 118. I’m very intentionally leaving that out for a purpose, and will not be adding it in. Sorry! 😉

@@benjamenfaen Because then people will think they need to memorize the on and kun for each on their own, which I'm completely against.
Once again, will not be backing down on this.

I understand you have a reason and I trust you have paved the way for how you want to do these series. I just want to give the feedback that my experience with the series so far is very good and the only thing not making it perfect is that I’m not provided the japanese word for the english word, only the symbol/kanji, so far I’ve learned most of these so I repeat the words in my head as I see the symbol, giving me great exercise, but eventually there will probably be more and more kanji I still haven’t learned the words for, and what would make your videos perfect in my opinion now, is if just the hiragana/katakana was written as a connotation when introducing the kanji, maybe along with the english words, not even needed to be adressed vocally at this point, only as an written addition to fill the maximal potential of repetition and learning.
I might change my mind later when you start the other series of reading as an addition to this, but as of right now this is my experience. I will trust your choice and process, but I also appreciate you reading our comment and feedback about our experience with your video.
I will probably have to look up the next kanji you introduce that I have not learned yet in the dictionary anyways, so there will be extra steps, which can be good for learning too anyways.
Thank you for making these videos, they are great.

Hi, I’d love to be able to get your anni deck, but I currently can’t afford a monthly subscription to your site… Is there any way I could buy just the flashcard & phrases deck?

Tokini Andy: I am using Tofugu to learn hiragana and katakana…. i’m almost there… so I will start some Kangi work soon. Tofugu suggests WaniKani… I also notice that you teach a course. I’m a beginner… Is Kangi important at this point of my journey? Best, John

Kanji is probably not what you want to be your main focus. Mainly because it is only helpful most of the time IN WORDS. This means that you usually want to actually learn kanji with the words that it goes in.
Since you're a very early beginner you most likely don't know a lot of words so learning kanji for words that you don't know might not be very helpful. I like to look at the kanji when I look up words since it gets me more familiar with them so when I eventually learn them I'm already going to notice it looking wrong if I don't draw it correctly.
There's no downside in starting to slowly pick up Kanji now, but just make, sure you are looking at them in the words you'll use them for, or learn the kanji for words you already know.
