I’d like to suggest #112 because her natural Afro hair doesn’t need even a brush, it’s finger-styled only. Especially good for Black buyers. Many of us are moving away from relaxed/straight hair to our natural hair textures, which does not tend to be straight.
a couple more tips: - plastic brushes are okay but the reason the wire brushes are recommended is because they don’t catch on wig caps as much. also, sometimes plastic brushes/combs can cause friction on the synthetic (plastic) hair fibers. - the our generation wire brush is just as good as ag’s and it’s $8 at target and comes with a spray bottle.
I just started collecting again this year! My first dolls were Samantha and Addy in 92/93’. I ultimately had to get a new wig for Samantha after almost 30 years of wear and tear (plus a chic bob haircut) but only had to do a hot water dunk for addys hair. They look great for how old they are and after years of play when I was little. All clothes were stored in a traveling wardrobe. I’ve had only one issue overall from a 2006 release. The faux suede rubbed off the shoes from my sparkly tunic outfit, they’d barely been touched :/
I only got straight hair dolls at first. I also started with Our Generation, as well. A doll wig brush is important. I have Our Generation brushes. I love the fact that there’s a water bottle included. I keep the magic eraser in case. The dolls stand. But no doll stands well. I lay my dolls on a bed. I do have to clean my dolls faces due to the dust. I have plastic containers for my doll items. Each collection is in a container. But, I separate clothes for different dolls. I have many pajamas, because they stay in bed. Unfortunately, if your air conditioning goes out, it will be a little bit hot for the dolls. I have only been collecting AG dolls for a year and a half. The easiest way to care for curls is to finger curl them using the spray bottle while covering their eyes. Wavy hair can be spritzed with the water bottle and carefully brushed and finger curled. You can make smaller or bigger waves and curl it somewhat, that way.
Thanks for the tips! I have seven 18 inch dolls and two Bitty Babies now. I just recently started collecting again after stopping for a while. I’m almost 40 and still love my dolls!
I’ve been collecting since 2009. It’s fun to watch videos like this and wish that I’d had some of this information before getting my daughter her first doll. We used her bristle hair brush and her hair ties in her #22’s hair. Needless to say, she had to have a head replacement a few years later. Since then I’ve gotten better with doll hair. One tip is to look for good wig brushes from Sally’s Beauty supply. They used to be cheaper than AG (haven’t bought one in awhile) and they are much better quality.
I got Julie and molly from a yard sale, from my parents. I think they were 50 bucks or more since they bought them for resale, they told me to choose one so I chose Julie and I got a ton of accessories too! I’m so happy.
I've been collecting since 2012 when my daughter was 6 and I was 41. My daughter stopped collecting and we sold all of her dolls in 2018 when she was 12, but I kept going. :) I've also sold and donated some of my dolls to keep my collection small (I want them all to fit in a doll cradle that I've had since I was little). I now have 6 dolls, plus a Chrissa who is currently listed on eBay. My newest doll is Evette. :) I definitely agree at a wire brush and water is the best tip for new collectors (and brushing the ends first). Great video!
I have been collecting since 2016! For my curly hair dolls (not the really curly hair dolls) I make little buns in their hair and then wrap an American Girl doll hair tie around the little bun. For example Rebecca will have 10 buns when I'm done.
Hi, Ally! I'm an older doll collector (23) who will be buying their first AG doll. I have a Color Surprise Barbie (pink, blue and purple pastel hair) who has the same hair fiber as AG dolls. I recently bought a plastic round brush for her, which works WONDERS for her hair. It gives her hair more volume and makes it bouncier. I plan on getting JLY 67 and the AG hairbrush, and will be happy to let you know which one works best. Thanks for the tips!
I’d like to suggest #112 because her natural Afro hair doesn’t need even a brush, it’s finger-styled only. Especially good for Black buyers. Many of us are moving away from relaxed/straight hair to our natural hair textures which does not tend to be straight.
I laughed when you said "How often do you dress your dolls in pjs anyway ?" Actually, I've thought about making a couple of pajama party and sleep over videos and Christmas morning scenes, etc. because I've made a ton of cute pjs. I bought Kira's koala bear set and made cat print ones, yellow ducky ones with matching slippers, pink flamingo ones, panda bear boy ones with matching slippers and bought moose print ones, Hello Kitty ones, dog print ones with extra cute doggy slippers. On and on. Also red or green and Christmas themed ones for Christmas and a couple for Valentine's Day. So more than a few videos will feature them wearing their pjs. Maybe some will lounge around all day in their pjs, too. I've done that a lot due to staying home during the pandemic. To comment about this video I have TM #44 and she has hair like Gabriela and it's impossible to control. Fly-a-ways in her face all the time. She's a pain to take pictures of because of that. Also have TM #58 but she's not as bad if you just leave her hair as is and don't style it. I just add a bow sometimes. Agree with your advice for first time buyers or for younger kids. You have to think about how easy or hard they will be to care for.
My photography style is usually dressing my dolls in modern trendy clothing and doing portrait photography. I don’t use my Pj’s that often anymore, but I used to get Pj’s for every new doll I bought
Great to find your channel. I’ve just ordered my first American Girl (boy). So much information that I wasn’t aware. Thanks for this great entertaining and informative video.🌟

Grew video. I have been collecting dolls all my life for almost 30 years except for my 10-year doll hiatus. My adive for new doll collectors is if you get your dolls second hand and you can't get a stain out or can't get tangles out of their hair take a break and try gain. You gave great adive. It’s quite hard for me to get American girl dolls and items, even a magic eraser because I live overseas. Not even eBay ships here but i still manage to get some dolls from amazon (but more expensive) but they don’t sell every doll available.

I usually try to keep my blinds closed to minimize the sunlight and heat coming in, or store them in a cooler area like the basement. I have an air conditioner in my room, so during the summer it doesn’t get too hot. But for long periods of heat like a trip in the summer, I move them to a cooler area or shut my blinds
Hahah your first tip is so funny, my first doll was JLY 46 which is basically like Gabriela. I think I was around 14 or so, maybe 13 when I got her and I couldn’t manage synthetic curls: i thought because i have very curly koily hair I’ll know what to do...but it doesnt work that way😅😂 I then straightened her hair and it was so awful, very frizzy and knotted.
I would like to start collecting AG dolls, but I have to pay 300 or more for each one plus shipping etc, and second hand dolls are in a petty bad condition and their accessories are even more expensive as second hand items
Hi Ally, I love your videos they are great. Thank you for the care tips. I have been collecting for over 20 years and I have about 92 dolls now. What would you recommend for dusting off their hairs? I’ve tried different things.
I think I have a video going over the best dolls for beginners. To be honest, I don't really read that much anymore so I am not the best person to give story recommendations. Don’t brush curly hair dolls and brush with water but not to much
Dont buy expensive doll stands buy a Build A Bear stand which costs 5 $ and works just as good!
