I absolutely love the idea of more old video games! Brings me back to the old "Backflips in Bioforge" days. One of my favorite GiantBomb segments to this very day.
The weird and basic early Genesis music that was particularly in EA games was because Sega provided sound middleware called GEMS for early Western developers. It was for developers that had nobody with any background in similar Yamaha chips or FM synthesis, and did not take any advantage of the Genesis sound chip's deeper features. You would basically pump in midi data and assign the tracks to basic preset instruments.
The bad sound in Zany Golf may not be because of GEMS, or at least it's not credited. It's a port of an Apple IIgs game which made full use of its 15 sound channels, and the Genesis only has 4 so many compromises had to be made not only on the sound.
these guys work so hard on making good video content, and out of everything in this video it's the sideways cardboard Obama in the background that makes me laugh every time I see it.
I can remember Super Starwars getting really good reviews and then Super Empire Strikes Back getting slated and was super gutted. Super Return Of The Jedi was probably the best out of the 3
Free games, that was the only real selling point to the majority of A500, A600 and A1200 users back then. We just had what was given to us so it was home computers and packs of blank disks over stupidly overpriced rom carts a lot of the time.
Talking about old games, I really liked playing Starflight on the Genesis. I preferred it over the Genesis Star Control port. Like RPGs and Strategy games of the time, it's not something they could sit down and play for this format.
Dan is out doing a lot of stuff for his book this week. I guess vacation? He was on Colin and Greg Live on Twitch on Tuesday and last week recorded an episode of the Comedy Button that was just released today.
