Hi, i tried installing on sd card and then on ssd, i always get stuck the same place... When i launch the game at the final stage, its not lunching the game and after a few seconds the luncher pops up again. I tried proton experimental and protonGE7-53\54.. have any ideas what's the problem? 🙏
Thanks work for me ! I only had one problem after i add instaled game into steam i had "get game" to instal it again not "launch". I just had to press note down the "get game" to change game location and i selected folder Genshin Impact Launcher or something like that and it works perfectly. Good video

This didn't work until recently. We don't know if it's intentional or not. This could be a fluke, and Hoyo may be locking that back come 3.6. Be careful with your main accounts.

You shouldn't have removed the installer pfx. You should've just copied the location of the launcher and placed it in Properties>TARGET and START IN That way you're using the same pfx. By adding a new Non-Steam Game you made a new pfx and the old one becomes pointless. Now you have two prefixed, one has the game files and the other starts the game.
Things fell apart for me right after I followed the step to remove the installer from my steam library. Since I did that, I am unable to find the launcher.exe anymore. I had the file location open, but I got a "this folder doesn't exist anymore" red message immediately after removing the installer from my library. Any idea what I can do to fix this? @@BOYSSSSS he's not crazy because I ran in to the exact same issue at the same exact same step. the creator made a glaring misstep that maybe the current steamOS doesn't agree with because the same exact thing happened to me when I was following the directions to the letter. basically right at the step where he says to remove the installer from steam, it completely uninstalls and erases everything you downloaded if you remove it, deleting all the folders in the program files for genshin and so on, forcing you to have to redownload all of the genshin game files all over again and basically start over. The reason the creator probably makes this mistake is because they used a microSD card, and they fail to account for what the experience will be like for those who are trying to download it to the onboard SSD.
As of October 2023 = Patch 4.1 (Neuvillete & Hu Tao Banner), can confirm this still works. Tested on a Ubuntu 22.04.03 system running GE-Proton8-16. NOTE: 1. Do NOT delete the installer like he did at 4:10 = Instead select "Hide Steam Game" you still need this folder to run the game 2. At 5:44 = When you run "Add a Non-Steam Game" (launcher.exe) it will ask to REDOWNLOAD the game! There is NO NEED for this as you have previously download the game files already... 3. From the 1st "Compatibility folder" (/home/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/2901732111/pfx/drive_c/Program Files/Genshin Impact/Genshin Impact Game), move the folder "Genshin Impact Game" (that has over 80GB+) to the NEW launcher.exe "Compatibility folder" that you created. Check the "Properties" of both folders in "/home/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata". If you did this right - the most recently created one should be 80GB+ (game files/launcher.exe) while the older one should only be 680MB+ (The installer files/ GenshinImpact_install_ua_8addb81de420.exe). 4. Resume normal steps at 6:15

Followed this guide but didn't see a launcher exe in that folder- only a GenshinImpact.exe, which I used instead. Seems to work just the same. ALSO: the 3 line button on my Deck didn't bring up the pause menu in GI like this video says, so I had to use a USB-A-to-C adapter and a generic keyboard to hit ESC and get that menu to appear. I wonder if this was intentional, I do remember speculation about a frame of a video from TGS that shows Genshin Impact loaded up on a Steam Deck. I was skeptical about that. But since Genshin now works on Steam OS through the official launcher. Could this mean Genshin Impact will be getting official Steam Deck support?
Ok so the launcher.exe when started tells me to get the game. There is little button to the bottom left where your supposed to find the game but its different from the one in the video. Its much more basic, i think old would describe it best and i cant find the game there. But the launcher you are supposed to download first is now running the game. Is that a problem?
@steamdeckgaming You really glossed over how to select an install folder on your SD card at around 2:20. Why edit the video to make it harder for us to follow along? I have tried selecting my SD card, following what little you include on this step in the video, but I'm just not able to "open" the sd card to install. The file name location bar remains blank. There is no Genshin Impact folder to click on (unlike in your video, which seems to exist already). I have tried making a Genshin Impact folder on my E drive to use, and I am able to see it in the install window, but I am still unable to actually select sd card as a install location. In game mode, I have confirmed that my SD card has been formatted and is selectable as a storage location for games. What is going on? Please fix your article and video to address this oversight. It is silly to get vague on this step, and it's really frustrating that I can not find any guides on this specific step.
just a heads up, dont delete the installer from steam. for some reason at least in my experience it deletes the entire game. I've had to reinstall it about 4 times now lmao
Followed the instructions exactly, but the exact moment I removed the installer from steam, all genshin files were gone. Currently redownloading, and testing if the files stay if I don't remove the installer. Weird behaviour, will try what happens if I keep the installer in steam (maybe just hiding it).

After adding the launcher to steam, setting the launch option and running it I'm getting "get game" instead of download like you, I've tried selecting the genshin impact folder and the genshin impact game folder but it says "game resources not found". Any clue on how to fix it?
Seems like the video was pretty well put together but the process broke. Somehow I got 3 genshin impact game folders and none of them bring me the option to go back a tab. No game launcher found anywhere. I know it downloaded properly

For SD card users: Step 1. Download installer Step 2. Set installer as non steam game Step 3. Set installer to run with Proton experimental Step 4. Run installer Step 5. Install on E drive Step 6. Locate game in SD card folder Step 7. Add game as non steam game Step 8. Set compatability to proton experimental. Step 9. Run game This got it working for me (only thing different from the video was finding the folder)
I just can't seem to figure this out. When I try to install on the E drive, nothing happens! I select the E drive, and the file name path remains blank. I am unable to click "open" to select the E drive for installation. I tried going to the E drive using Dolphin and created a "Genshin Impact" folder to use, but the problem is the same... I can't navigate to the folder, but I can't "open" the location to select for installation. What am I missing??? So frustrating as it seems like every video and guide deliberately glosses over this part with minimal detail. Even this video edits out the actual process of selecting the folder!! Very frustrating.

If you followed this guide and it worked, but then one day you try to launch the game and it says there's an update you need to get, but it doesn't automatically show any sort of update button: Launch the INSTALLER. Click on install game or whatever. (Check the "agree to terms" box). It'll warn you that the game is already installed and ask you if you want to overwrite it - do so. It'll load for about 5 seconds, then the game's launcher will start. You should now see an update button.
Question. When in desktop mode I can right click on most things and use "add to steam" to skip the whole "browse your files" and "copy the path" stuff. Is that not available to everyone? Because that makes it a ton easier. Also, in your written tutorial on step 25 you mention to enable "Auto launch at startup" but I didn't see it in this video. Is this step required? I'm getting a little bit of mixed messages here. Thank you so much for showing this though! Will absolutely use this (with an alt account for now just to be super sure)
The right click add to Steam was added later, It does make it a lot easier, it used to be a plugin, I forgot they added that, thanks lol. The launch on start is not required, but it helps to skip the launcher, I realized I missed that as I did the article after the video, my apologies
One thing that these guides are completely forgetting to explain is how to update the launcher. Version 4.2 is around the corner, and while I can download updates IN the launcher and in the game's loading screen itself, I do not know how to update the launcher.
Mostly because it wasn’t known to be an issue at the time. But you have to delete and reinstall the launcher then point it at your game install. So make sure you have your game folder not in the compat folder of the launcher otherwise You will have to redownload everything and not just the launcher

Heads up, I'm not sure which update to SteamOS did it but if you delete a non-steam game now it deletes all of it's compatdata along with it. So this specific process would hit a snag after the 4 minute mark, as those folders would no longer exist.
@@ravenknight_gaming3177 at first I tried just changing the target and location within Steam to target the launcher instead of the installer, but sadly that didn't work. How I ended up getting it to work was copying over the entire "Genshin Impact" folder to another location so it wouldn't get deleted again, add the launcher as a non-steam game, when you open it it'll try to reinstall again but use the "Installed? Locate Game" option under the "Get Game" button and select your copied over files. Should launch perfectly fine from that point forward, but it does mean you need double the required space to get this to work.
Followed your steps exactly. Game launched with no problems after the initial download. After adding the launcher shortcut, the launcher appears and acts as if the game's not installed and ended up with duplicate files. Gonna delete everything an try again

This was confusing, why did I have to download the game twice? Was there something we aren’t supposed to actually do? I don’t think I have to download and install a game twice for it to work and I followed these steps to the T. Mine showed “download” at this part 5:48 but it was just redownloading the whole game, not doing the “verification process” like on the video. Can anyone help clarify please? I just wanna play 😭💙
Don’t delete the installer anymore. A comment is pinned. But they changed the cleanup process. So you need to change the install location or don’t delete the installer.
Upon navigating to run/media/SD card and setting that as the installation location, it inaccurately reports the remaining space on disk as the space remaining on my steam deck, which is 6 GB, instead of the SD card's remaining space, which is 233 GB. Any idea why that is, or how to fix it?

Oh please When I start the launcher, it tells me to reinstall the game from the beginning, instead of just starting the verification process ... I've canceled the installation, and it has deleted all the game's folders ........ So you're telling me that I'm supposed to start all over again, take 2 hours to download the game, and then take another 2 hours to download it twice??? Hey, so when I install following you steam creates a compatdata folder when installing. After install + download, then adding the launcher to steam, steam creates a second compatdata folder. When the launcher is ran from steam, it can't find the already downloaded data and it downloads again. I think this is why we are seeing the 100+ gigs. This is getting installed twice. I suggest that we only install then immediately quit, add to steam, run the launcher, then download the game. The game should only be 53.25 gbs. What I don't know is if the second compat folder has the same c++ install.
its not getting installed twice, but it downloads compressed, then extracts (so you need double the space free), after extraction it will delete the original files, annoying process

@@SteamDeckGamingI just tested it a few times and you end up with two game folders if you do it following the video. I moved my game folder to the SD card so I can point to the same game location on either the initial launching and/or the final setup, this helps you make sure you only have one copy. If the game requires to re-do the install for some reason, you can get to the game folder again without having to re-download.
This is a nightmare. I've been trying to move my 75gb install in to the launcher folder for 3 hours. The game just keeps trying to install all over again. Desktop mode is pain

Only one thing: there's a launcher update, and even though I have around 13gb free on my internal memory, the launcher says it cannot update because there's not enough space. How do I solve this? (And do I need to? It's a launcher update, not the game update, which works as it is on the SD card which has much more space.)
Launcher updates are still bugged. You have to delete and reinstall. Just make sure your game folder is elsewhere and point the launcher to it after reinstall.
Hi I managed to get to the point where I could open the game from my Steam account and i’m at the first part of the game. But when I click on the three dots icon at the top of the Steam Deck the Settings does not pop up, what do I do now? None of my controller keys work

I kept going through the installation phase while following this vid xhsnnd What finally worked for me was I still added the launcher.exe then i copied its "Target & Start in" path to the Installer.exe. This made me not go through another download and successfully play the game. I also removed the launcher.exo from steam after this so there's only 1 copy and it's still working. The vid tells you to delete the installer but that just deletes the game entirely GOD IT TOOK ME MANY TIMES TO FIX THIS SHT

This really cool of a method to get around installing windows apps, but how would you Uninstall if you ever had to. Plus i heard of somebody uninstalling the normal way and it going like havoc and deleting lots of their Home folder, so even if this is a usable way of doing it. It would be really good to see a way to do an Uninstall if ever needed.

I have tried selecting my SD card, following what little you include on this step in the video, but I'm just not able to "open" the sd card to install. The file name location bar remains blank. There is no Genshin Impact folder to click on (unlike in your video, which seems to exist already). I have tried making a Genshin Impact folder on my E drive to use, and I am able to see it in the install window, but I am still unable to actually select sd card as a install location.
In game mode, I have confirmed that my SD card has been formatted and is selectable as a storage location for games. What is going on?
Please fix your article and video to address this oversight. It is silly to get vague on this step, and it's really frustrating that I can not find any guides on this specific step.
just a heads up, dont delete the installer from steam. for some reason at least in my experience it deletes the entire game. I've had to reinstall it about 4 times now lmao

Followed the instructions exactly, but the exact moment I removed the installer from steam, all genshin files were gone. Currently redownloading, and testing if the files stay if I don't remove the installer. Weird behaviour, will try what happens if I keep the installer in steam (maybe just hiding it).
I did all this but when I wanna download language packs ingame it says insufficient space even though I have plenty left . How do I get around that ?

Seems like the video was pretty well put together but the process broke. Somehow I got 3 genshin impact game folders and none of them bring me the option to go back a tab. No game launcher found anywhere. I know it downloaded properly

i gave up.downloading and play.. after reboot steam deck all genshin related folder are gone.. completely missing idk what happen 😮 3x attemp and still missing 😢
For SD card users:
Step 1. Download installer
Step 2. Set installer as non steam game
Step 3. Set installer to run with Proton experimental
Step 4. Run installer
Step 5. Install on E drive
Step 6. Locate game in SD card folder
Step 7. Add game as non steam game
Step 8. Set compatability to proton experimental.
Step 9. Run game
This got it working for me (only thing different from the video was finding the folder)
I just can't seem to figure this out. When I try to install on the E drive, nothing happens! I select the E drive, and the file name path remains blank. I am unable to click "open" to select the E drive for installation. I tried going to the E drive using Dolphin and created a "Genshin Impact" folder to use, but the problem is the same... I can't navigate to the folder, but I can't "open" the location to select for installation. What am I missing???
So frustrating as it seems like every video and guide deliberately glosses over this part with minimal detail. Even this video edits out the actual process of selecting the folder!! Very frustrating.
Did you format your sd? Do that then restart your deck

If you followed this guide and it worked, but then one day you try to launch the game and it says there's an update you need to get, but it doesn't automatically show any sort of update button: Launch the INSTALLER. Click on install game or whatever. (Check the "agree to terms" box). It'll warn you that the game is already installed and ask you if you want to overwrite it - do so. It'll load for about 5 seconds, then the game's launcher will start. You should now see an update button.
Question. When in desktop mode I can right click on most things and use "add to steam" to skip the whole "browse your files" and "copy the path" stuff. Is that not available to everyone? Because that makes it a ton easier.
Also, in your written tutorial on step 25 you mention to enable "Auto launch at startup" but I didn't see it in this video. Is this step required? I'm getting a little bit of mixed messages here.

The right click add to Steam was added later, It does make it a lot easier, it used to be a plugin, I forgot they added that, thanks lol.
The launch on start is not required, but it helps to skip the launcher, I realized I missed that as I did the article after the video, my apologies

One thing that these guides are completely forgetting to explain is how to update the launcher. Version 4.2 is around the corner, and while I can download updates IN the launcher and in the game's loading screen itself, I do not know how to update the launcher.
Mostly because it wasn’t known to be an issue at the time. But you have to delete and reinstall the launcher then point it at your game install. So make sure you have your game folder not in the compat folder of the launcher otherwise You will have to redownload everything and not just the launcher

Heads up, I'm not sure which update to SteamOS did it but if you delete a non-steam game now it deletes all of it's compatdata along with it. So this specific process would hit a snag after the 4 minute mark, as those folders would no longer exist.

@@ravenknight_gaming3177 at first I tried just changing the target and location within Steam to target the launcher instead of the installer, but sadly that didn't work.
How I ended up getting it to work was copying over the entire "Genshin Impact" folder to another location so it wouldn't get deleted again, add the launcher as a non-steam game, when you open it it'll try to reinstall again but use the "Installed? Locate Game" option under the "Get Game" button and select your copied over files. Should launch perfectly fine from that point forward, but it does mean you need double the required space to get this to work.

Followed your steps exactly. Game launched with no problems after the initial download. After adding the launcher shortcut, the launcher appears and acts as if the game's not installed and ended up with duplicate files. Gonna delete everything an try again

Is the launcher window still open? You can check from the steam menu. Make sure to change the launcher to close on game launch.

It was working before update 3.7 now it doesn’t. I tried a new install but the launcher.exe is no where to be found!

This was confusing, why did I have to download the game twice? Was there something we aren’t supposed to actually do? I don’t think I have to download and install a game twice for it to work and I followed these steps to the T. Mine showed “download” at this part 5:48 but it was just redownloading the whole game, not doing the “verification process” like on the video. Can anyone help clarify please? I just wanna play 😭💙
Don’t delete the installer anymore. A comment is pinned. But they changed the cleanup process. So you need to change the install location or don’t delete the installer.

Upon navigating to run/media/SD card and setting that as the installation location, it inaccurately reports the remaining space on disk as the space remaining on my steam deck, which is 6 GB, instead of the SD card's remaining space, which is 233 GB. Any idea why that is, or how to fix it?

I managed to reinstall the launcher which fixed the space problem but the game doesn't launch anymore.

So I've started the installation at 8:30 am, and it will finish at 2:30 pm
Im at the part where I would put the Launch.exe to my Steam Library and it kinda forced me to download the game again 1h to 30min and after the download part is finished, I pressed Launch(play the game) on the game Launcher and the login screen does now open up,
Followed every instruction perfectly and once I added the launcher it still says get game and starts downloading again. I tried to search for the same folder in installation location but to no avail. Where can I find the install folder so it doesn’t download again?

hold off a couple more days to be sure ;) - but brows the folder from steam in desktop mode and you can delete the compat data folder

Hey, so when I install following you steam creates a compatdata folder when installing. After install + download, then adding the launcher to steam, steam creates a second compatdata folder. When the launcher is ran from steam, it can't find the already downloaded data and it downloads again. I think this is why we are seeing the 100+ gigs. This is getting installed twice. I suggest that we only install then immediately quit, add to steam, run the launcher, then download the game. The game should only be 53.25 gbs. What I don't know is if the second compat folder has the same c++ install.
its not getting installed twice, but it downloads compressed, then extracts (so you need double the space free), after extraction it will delete the original files, annoying process

@@SteamDeckGamingI just tested it a few times and you end up with two game folders if you do it following the video. I moved my game folder to the SD card so I can point to the same game location on either the initial launching and/or the final setup, this helps you make sure you only have one copy. If the game requires to re-do the install for some reason, you can get to the game folder again without having to re-download.

This is a nightmare. I've been trying to move my 75gb install in to the launcher folder for 3 hours. The game just keeps trying to install all over again. Desktop mode is pain
If your keyboard isn't appearing with the shortcut just restart your deck and it should show up👍

Only one thing: there's a launcher update, and even though I have around 13gb free on my internal memory, the launcher says it cannot update because there's not enough space. How do I solve this? (And do I need to? It's a launcher update, not the game update, which works as it is on the SD card which has much more space.)
Launcher updates are still bugged. You have to delete and reinstall. Just make sure your game folder is elsewhere and point the launcher to it after reinstall.

What finally worked for me was I still added the launcher.exe then i copied its "Target & Start in" path to the Installer.exe. This made me not go through another download and successfully play the game. I also removed the launcher.exo from steam after this so there's only 1 copy and it's still working. The vid tells you to delete the installer but that just deletes the game entirely GOD IT TOOK ME MANY TIMES TO FIX THIS SHT
You changed "target" AND "start in" to the exe? Doesn't the Genshin "install now" box pop up every time?
@@kylerclarke2689 no, it's the launch button. Just copy the "target & start in" path of the launcher.exe to the installer.exe and use the installer.exe as the app and rename it to genshin. I don't really get it but it works for me
i cant open the keyboard when i open genshin and it asks me to sign in, the usual steam + X wont work

This really cool of a method to get around installing windows apps, but how would you Uninstall if you ever had to. Plus i heard of somebody uninstalling the normal way and it going like havoc and deleting lots of their Home folder, so even if this is a usable way of doing it. It would be really good to see a way to do an Uninstall if ever needed.
Just delete the folder it installs to and remove it from steam as a link
