I agree a part 2 as I use GU gels and Stinger gels. I do appreciate all the work you put into this video I know everyone who watches appreciates it. Great job Alex you rock!!!!
Thank you, Mike! It's always very nice to hear that the content I'm putting together is useful and/entertaining :-) I was using GUs a few years ago but the taste was a bit strong for me over longer durations. That being said I remember their "Roctane" variations were very well dosed in electrolytes and minerals. Need to try Stinger! Have a great Sunday Mike!
Thanks for doing the expensive work of testing for us 😀 Have you tried SiS Beta Fuel gels? They have the same glucose:fructose ratio as Maurten. I would be interested how the glucose variability on supersapian testing compares between the two. Does the sodium alginate make all the difference?
Years ago I tried a variety of gels including Gu, powerbar, Cliff, Hammer gel and a few others. Seemed like I got a big energy spike for a mile or so and then back to where I was before consuming one. Then I tried the original Honey Stingers and they seemed to be good for 4 to 5 miles even though they take longer to kick in. I do add electrolyte pills with them especially if it’s warm. The problem is the original ones are hard to get now. The organic stingers first ingredient is tapioca and I don’t seem to work nearly as well. I always enjoy your channel Thanks.
Many thanks for your nice comment, Dale. Very interesting to read it and the info on Stingers gels. I believe many companies have now implemented more "complex" carbs in their gels in order to prevent from short/high spikes and try to provide athletes with a more stable glucose level. I do however need to test the Stingers as many of you mentioned them to me. Thanks again and take care
Great video, thank you for the effort you put in the video. Maurten is very expensive , most of those gels I haven’t seen at sports shops here in South Africa. I currently use GU.
Thanks for the very nice comment, Kabelo! Much appreciated!
Thanks Alex for once again bringing valuable info and differentiate yourself among a saturated world of shoetubers. Keep the hard though relevant work and your channel will keep flying!
The comparison was top notch, even though I missed the gel I have been using for a while now (Hüma), for being more balanced then classics like gu, which have huge though short spikes. It would also be interesting to see in a future honey based gels like Stinger or Aerobee.
One more question: how about those carbs/isotonic drink mix (from 6d for instance), is there any difference on the spikes from those vs. from gels? I understand that those are less convenient for carrying on a running race, however for training sounds like a good 2in1 option. Any experience from your side also in view of the fact that those seem to be more used in cycling?
Cheers 👊🏼
Many thanks for the very nice comment, Bruno! Stingers have been mentioned a few times to me in the comments so I'll definitely check them. That being said honey is not known for being a low glycemic index type of food but it'd be interesting to see how it stacks up. I need to check Hüma, never heard of them to be honest.
Your question is very good and indeed the more you can dilute your carb consumption (like in drinks), and the more you can spread the intake over time, the less subject to spikes you'd theoretically be. That's what I actually do on the bike, drinking a few sips every 5mins instead of taking one full gel every 20mins.
Cheers
Alex thank you for your review, very interesting though! There are at least two more well known and popular gel brands amongst runners, gu energy gels and high5 gels.
Thanks a lot for your comment, Panagiotis! I was actually using GUs a few years ago but stopped as the taste was a bit too strong for me over longer distances. Need to check High5 though! Take care
I’m usually using SiS gels. Works perfect for me! I always wanted to try Maurten ones. Maybe after your video I will give them a try…
If you have something that already works fine for you, it's great! But Maurtens are so different that it may be worth giving them a try just for the sake of it! Don't expect nice flavors like the SiS ones though! Cheers
Hello from Rotterdam! 😉
Awesome to finally see this.
My Marathon fueling is set now, I' m using Maurten. But will be trying some of these in the future.
In Training Longruns I used Powerbar Hydro Gels btw. They' re like 70ml so almost a drink.
Big day for you tomorrow! Will keep an eye on the tracker 😉
I mean powerbar hydro and other « hydro » gels are nice because indeed they feel like a drink but to hit my carb targets I’d need to carry like 2kg of them on me (and a volume that wouldn’t fit in any pocket). Here in the pain cave on the bike I must admit they’re nice for a change indeed!
Good luck Robin!! #GoBeyondYourLimits 💪🏻💪🏻
@@AlexFilitti Awesome, haha. 1362 is my number✌️
👌🏻👊🏻
@@AlexFilitti 02:45:46😊 Happy with that.
Yes I saw!! You nailed it!! Great job, Robin - super happy for you 😀
I believe the SIS gels are isotonic, that's why they are bigger and have less calories. The plus side is you don't need to take them with water.
The one on the thumbnail yes but the one I presented and for which you have the data is not (but I may be wrong!)
Nice Video Alex...... Would have been great to see a graph of side by side comparison of the Blood glucose release and stability profiles for each one...... easier to see visually ... great Info though thanks!
Yes I thought exactly the same when I rewatched it after a couple of months. Next time around! :-) Thanks for the comment Stuart
Excellent video
Great content!
Many thanks, Alberto - much appreciated!
Very interesting gels review ...i'm gonna start to test some of them for my first marathon next year...the only gels i have tested are Aptonia gels from Decathlon or the one with BCAA from Isostar....but i'm not sure that they would work for me on a marathon ...i need more explaination about how the carbs work, i mean when to take them and how many .. during a run or race. 👍😉🇨🇵
I'll prepare a comprehensive video on energy sources and how to fuel ;-) Decathlon gels and Isostar are already very good but indeed you can probably find stuff that work even better for you during races (and keep the Decathlon ones for training for instance). Merci Francky!!
Great idea! Thanks Alex :)
I have been using PurePower gels, they have some new stuff more liquid and much easier to use it.
There is a "Neutral' flavor that has quite neutral taste, very little sweet. Not bad.
Sounds like something I need to try then! Thanks a lot for the encouraging comment, much appreciated as always.
@@AlexFilitti I don't know how purepower compares with the others. From your test the only one I tried was the SYS. It would be interesting to find out the glucose curve though...
Would be great if you could test the Spring Energy gels. They are great tasting, definitely work very well (with me) but curious how they compare
Hi Fanny! I should try them indeed. There will maybe be a follow up episode to this one as indeed I did not try all the gels people recommended. Thanks a lot for your comment
Hmmm.... Ever tried Huma or Spring Energy? Those are my current go-to gels. Have tried Maurten, but too expense over time (and no sodium). Also tried GU, SIS, Honey Stinger, Unived, Boom, etc.... Usually consistency is off (too sweet, too liquidy, too thick) or taste is off. Also, really prefer gels with some sodium to I don't have to take additional capsules.
Hey there! Never heard of any of these two but I'll check them out. Thanks for mentioning them. I do agree that sodium in the gels is a good thing but as I'm also competing on the bike, it doesn't bother me to put some good sodium tabs (like the PH ones) in my water bottles. Cheers
very interesting and great scientific approach. I like the PowerBar Smoothie, would be interested to know how they stack up as I find them more pleasant to eat. You mentioned the variability values and that of course matters if you compete for the win, but for the average non-elite runner, how much of a difference is it really? Rather marginal like comparing the speed of the BMW to the Mercedes or rather comparing to a Velosolex?
For non-elite runners what will matter most is the amount of carbs. Many people are underfueling and the mere increase in carbs intake can do magics. Then the second step would be to worry about variability indeed. Thanks a lot for the very nice comment, Phil.
Thanks for this video! It’s very useful to me to narrow down the list of gels to test 🙏. I like the SIS texture, it’s very easy to absorb. How about the Precision and Maurteen? Are they easy to swallow?
Hi Olivier! You’re very welcome, super happy if it’s useful! Maurten is very very dense and either you chew it to « break it down » or you swallow large chunks. Precision was quite liquid and now they thickened it a bit making it more of a « paste » but still super easy to swallow and digest. Hope this helps!
@@AlexFilitti thanks a lot. I tested some Cliff caffeinated gels but they are so sugary and dense that it sticks in your mouth… I like the SIS ones because it’s almost liquid and goes straight in your stomach. I’ll give the Precisions a try then.
what was the exercise intensity during your tests described herein?
This is something I will probably have to learn more about. Practically all of my running is done fasted and I’ve never taken even water up to marathon distance.
I’d be interested to see if they make a positive difference to me in this marathon training block.
You probably developed an excellent fat oxidation system and you have a performant energy ressource there. But you’re also likely missing out on another energy source than can be very useful in a marathon for instance. Looking forward to hearing on how you develop and improve from that angle!
@@AlexFilitti it’s definitely something I’m going to look at. Nutrition and running is an area I’ve never really investigated. I’ve kept it simple, lace up, run then eat breakfast when I’m done.
I’ll start working through some of these gels on a Sunday long run and see what works and what doesn’t.
Should make a part 2 and include the Unived gels as I’m curious how those stack up. I really like their much higher sodium levels compared to the rest. My thoughts are reasoning for carrying your own gels is you don’t have to rely on what the race course is offering for electrolyte drinks and pre-adapt to that before your race. You can just get your hydration via water at the aid station, and all your carbs and electrolytes come via the gels you’re carrying
I used a recent marathon combining a unived and precision gels and it worked ok but unived taste was 🤢 compared to precision gels
Hi Ryan and thanks for suggesting the Unived gels. My review need a part 2 it seems, in order to include more gels that you guys suggested in the comment. I agree about that race strategy and no bad surprises with what races provide you. I did things the other way around once: checked what gels were given on a race I was doing, and trained only with these (new to me). But I really didn't like them in terms of taste and digestion so I likely won't do that strategy again haha. Cheers
Nice video 👍🏻. I guess taste and how your gut handle the gels are very individuel. My stomach can handle everything so I choose gels based on taste. My favorit is SIS salted caramel 😊.
Exactly, lots of subjective things when it comes to nutrition. But if this can help then hey why not 🙂 I think I had this one among the SIS I tested and indeed good taste. Caramel gels are often nice from what I discovered during this testing period! Thanks for the nice comment Michael 🙂
The discount code for precision fuel doesn't work
Very interesting... I am on Keto diet.. I don't feel the need for it. I also have no water or my runs but I don't run more of 90 minutes. Perhaps if I run longer runs I might need it?
Depends on how hard you run.
@Blixten said it all. Energy systems vary depending on the power you need to produce to sustain a given pace. The more intensity the more carbs you need (with a limit to that of course).
You should try Spring Energy
Duly noted, I'm adding these to the list of gels for round 2 :-)
Difficult to find in Europe. I also wanted to try it.
Winforce is an alternative made from natural ingredients, but the flavours this year aren't great.
SIS Beta Fuel is 40g carbs, too bad you didnt had one to test.
Beat fuel is a 1:08 mixture, I'd say serve a more specific purpose to hit hourly crab goals whereas these gels are the more general type.
Gels are overrated and expensive for a simple mixture of sucrose/fructose.
Liquid nutrition with 5 types of carbohydrates are so much better.
You need maltodextrin and starch to avoid sugar spikes and give sustained energy.
Most of the gels tested here are based on maltodextrin and/or starch!
@@AlexFilitti That was not so clear. I know for instance the powergel and Maurten ones are just simple sugars.
Probably should have made it clearer. Thanks a lot for the feedback
This stuff is pricey
They are all poison :p
Haha because they're sugar? Indeed it's not ideal but you need carbs to perform at certain intensities
