Hi Loey! Mennonite here (Menno USA), living in Amish country. Whether or not an Amish person is allowed to use a radio depends on what their order is like, and is decided by the community elders. Many Amish around here allow some technology outside their homes, up to and including cell phones! However, there are some that refuse to even put reflectors on their buggies and use gas lamps at night instead. It's a big spectrum!

I find it interesting that the Amish aren't more strict in the sense that they aren't all required to follow the same laws or rules or whatever. I would've thought that either you can have technology or you can't. I never would have guessed there were such grey areas like this involved.

@@debtoralive4693 it’s the same way here in MN. It kinda reminds me of different denominations in Christianity. But instead of Catholic/Lutheran/etc, they have “New Order” or “Old Order,” etc. I grew up with Amish neighbors nearby and in general our community has many. I’ve even witnessed one family use an old, small tractor, but I’ve only seen that once.
Anyways, when I was a kid I always thought it was no radio/electronics/no anything like that. Then as I got older I learned about the different types. In general pretty misunderstood but kind people, at least around where I’m at. They have some awesome greenhouses around here that I visit every summer/spring.

I know it is never an easy thing to deal with emotionally, the abuses inflicted upon an innocent child. I used to think I was only beaten when I deserved it, all the way up until I was in my late 20's when I had my own son and realized immediately that I NEVER once had a reason good enough to warrant hitting my child. NEVER! His mistakes did not ever enrage me, they only helped me teach him to correct his errors. You can punish children in effective and loving ways if they mess up. But mostly with calm discussions designed to reach mutual understandings.

I grew up in an Assembly of God church and that alone was enough to scare someone. They made us take a test to see which “Holy super power” we had - i scored pretty high and was seen as a healer at only 11 years old.. They put me in services with adults at 12 and after every sermon i would be called up (the adult sermon may I remind you, i’m the only child in a room of adults) and I “healed” the people who came up and bowed down at the end of the stage. Elderly people would come up to me and beg for me to pray for a sick or disabled family member they had.
I was 16 and leading sermons for children and even kids my own age at the time. By 17 the church offered to pay for my college tuition at their organized university. Thankfully, something (finally) told me this is not good and i left the church and pretty much ghosted them.

I lived in Palmer Lake when the cult was active around 10 years ago, and attended it a few times. My parents met through the Living Word Fellowship, and so I was pretty much indoctrinated into it. I'm currently recovering from CPTSD and severe depression. It's really messed up what they teach. It destroys your free will and takes away your ability to form boundaries and healthy relationships.
It's refreshing hearing someone from "outside" talk about it. I'm still coming to terms with just how destructive this group was. It really destroyed many many lives, including my own. I'm no longer "Christian" and will probably never trust another religion or religious group.
My dad worked at the sawmill and was one of Shiloh's builders. I personally went to Young Adult School of Prophets, a two week summer camp with work activities and other church events, twice at Shiloh and twice in San Diego at another church location, and then attended the School of Prophets (for adults) in Shiloh.

Members of this cult have tried to get media attention & there are lawsuits pending. It would be absolutely great if outside researchers would reach out to some of the former members (those who aren't involved in lawsuits). Some of what you share here is great, some is a little off course as far as the big picture. You must also realize there was blatant emotional abuse, gaslighting, sexual grooming, physical abuse, & labor abuse. All us kids who attended YASP (young adult summer program- part of SOP-school of profits) at Shiloh were forced to work during their 'summer camp' (which was run for at least 30 yrs). Families/marriages were split up, LGBTQ youth & adults were shunned & more. My memory of a lot of stuff is fuzzy & hard to piece together (which is a red flag of sorts). Thank you for raising awareness & hopefully compassion.

I remember Shiloh in the late 70s/early 80s. I was elementary school age, so most is pretty fuzzy. I remember the playground outside, the narrow green(?) halls, the smell of new carpet, the sanctuary, and a green olive, cream cheese, and sprout sandwich that I couldn’t get enough of.

I'm a non denominational Christian and faith healers sketch me out. Prayer is a huge part of our faith but I don't think God is calling us to reject modern medicine. My sister was part of a faith healing cult for a while because they convinced her, if she prayed hard enough, her eczema would go away. If God didn't heal you, you weren't "Christian" enough. It messed her up. My pastor, on the hand, has expressed multiple times that physical and mental illnesses are not symbolic of weak faith or being a "bad" Christian. He's even been using anti depressants for years. It was a breath of fresh air to hear him say that stuff because I was in a dark place mentally at the time.

I have a weird fascination with cults. Growing up in a religious household, the concept of people using other people's faith and beliefs to corrupt and warp their minds is horrific. Im always afraid of getting caught in one too... I sometimes struggle with gullibility, and am a mentally ill person, and I know those two do not bode well when it comes to my susceptibility of being manipulated. Tack on my people pleaser defensive mechanism to avoid conflict, and Im just a walking target for these evil people. Learning about cults give me a sense of comfort, cause it allows me to educate myself on the things I should look out for if I ever found myself talking with the wrong person

    • @-Ghostess
      @-Ghostess Рік тому +24

Because it is the easiest to convince people looking for a new church family into joining because it's easy to portray as just another denomination, and easier to twist the familiar into a different way of thinking about it, especially since most in the Christian faith only have a surface level knowledge of what the bible says, and usually from hearing others tell them what it means instead of what it says.

In Frankfort, Indiana, there was a Living Word church. My grandparents went there and even sang in the choir. My grandma performed solos there. They drug me there as a child a few times and their members would dance around, arms in the air, speaking in “tongues”, etc. They would tell me over and over I needed to do that too. It was creepy AF. The last time I went with them on a Wednesday night, they had bible study or something and I had to go to the kids class. We were given this book called “Don’t Hug a Grudge” to take home. It was definitely culty!

Side note: the living word has a man named Cameron Stratton that was working for them that was a superintendent or something and dealt with disciplinary actions for students with a Christian school in Frankfort. He was arrested for child seduction and there was a trial. I don’t know a lot about it bc I don’t live around there anymore but pretty interesting giving so many people are coming out with abuse allegations and saying this is a cult!

@@cartermichellelee Sounds like the same excuse to cover for predators.
I don't know. JRS TLW abandoned the Pnetcostl speaking in tongues decades ago for "bigger revelations.:

Not the same cult. No less nasty, I'm sure, and definitely some similarities. However, I'm positive that it wasn't a Living Word Fellowship church. We did have a family living in Frankfort at one time. But we were in West Lafayette. Most folks traveled in from surrounding towns, including our Frankfort family. In the late 80's some key people moved out to Shiloh and some other key people transferred elsewhere. I think they eventually lost the building or something. I was gone by then, but services were moved to Indianapolis in the late 80's and eventually died out. There hasn't been a TLWF in Indiana in decades.

It depends on what type of Amish you are, somtimes there are groups that regroup or just chose to use minimal electronics
