  • Today’s soft spoken male ASMR ramble and story time is very special to me as languages are a huge part of my life. They fascinate me on a scientific and emotional level and I’ve dedicated my life to them. I have a slightly unorthodox approach to languages as I see them as pure maths, which I also love, and in this video I hope I can not only explain myself well but also convey how passionate I am. I’d love to know your thoughts and you can find the link to my English language channel below in case you are interested in seeing what I mean when I say languages are maths :)

    Thinking back to highschool, I took every language course offered...I was really good at that stuff, and they were all bird courses for me! May have picked the interest up from my dad, who was (and, at 89, still is) fascinated by languages...
    The math/language connection Sam makes intrigues me...because I was terrible at math but languages were so easy. I wonder though whether math only became difficult for me when the way it was taught was changed...the connection Sam makes, about rules and patterns, certainly makes sense.

      @@stevetournay6103 awww I love that you share this passion with your dad! ❤️
      I will make a video about why I like maths soon but the reason why I think most people dislike it or don't understand it is that it's often taught as a series of rules and formulas that you simply need to learn by heart, whereas I love finding out HOW those rules came to be and the mental processes that hide behind them. There is a reason why formulas are the way they are and it's fascinating to think that someone even came up with that idea to begin with. And these same logical reasons are at the core of languages

    Very interesting topic! I got you, your observations and thoughts made sense to me.👍

    We have four national languages (in a way five😂) in Switzerland: Swiss German (for speaking) and German (for reading & writing), French, Italian and Romansh. (It's a fascinating aspect of language how it can vary so greatly within a relatively small geographical area.😊) I live in the center of Switzerland, which is one of the German-speaking parts, I only speak "Schwiitzerdütsch".😁

    I don't know if you've ever heard Swiss German, but it's very different from German. It's sounds softer, has a lot of ch/sch-sounds and we use many unique words that don't exist in German. (e.g. "Gehen wir?" is simply "Gömmer?" in Swiss German.) It's literally a different language!
    Most Germans can't understand us, except for words that sound the same in German, of course. We only speak "High German", as it's called here, when a German (or a German-speaking person) addresses us in that way. That's why Germans in Switzerland often feel left out, get frustrated and go back to Germany. Really!😂
    We don't really have an official spelling and we only have two tenses, yes two! The Präsens and the Perfekt. We use them for everything, even for the future. So you can imagine that having twelve tenses in English is a little bit overwhelming for me.🤯 My brain is simply not made for so many!😂
    (For the future we often use Präsens + a time expression. e.g. "Ech schriebä morn en Brief." = "I write tomorrow a letter." You could probably say some things in Futur 1/2 too, but it would sound a bit strange. It also depends on the dialect to some extent, how it would sound.)
    Well, I've lectured you enough about "Schwiitzerdütsch", and I hope it wasn't too confusing.😳😂 To end this, let's not forget the infamous Swiss German "Chuchichäschtli" (Küchenschrank/kitchen cupboard) it's the ultimate tongue twister for every linguist! Have fun practicing!😜

      @@patrik_wilhelm Blimey, I didn't know Swiss German was so different 😱 poor Germans that move to Switzerland! 😜
      When I did my long exchanges with Munich and followed Latin lessons there, for some reason the translation was in Dutch, most of which I understood through knowing German, and the sentence you wrote about the letter reminded me of that excersise 😜
      At some point I will make a video in German (as promised in the past) and I will mention this book, but I'll do it now, too, as I think you'd like it. It's called DER DATIV IST DEM GENITIV SEIN TOD and through satire and comedy it makes fun of the grammar and vocabulary mistakes that Germans make in German (only Hoch Deutsch, though). I think it's brilliant! It's at least 15 years old because I bought it when I was in school, but I hope you can find it somewhere

      @@SamCarusoASMR Thanks for the tip. I've just downloaded it! It's a well known book. I remember at the time the author appeared on numerous German talk shows to promote it. I think he has written more volumes over the years. It's funny, since I've been learning English, I've also started paying a lot more attention to German grammar. Looking forward to your German video.😊

      @@Kaytlin_ Awww thank you so much, Kat! ❤️ I'm really envious that you are learning German! Now the language teacher in me is going to come out and say this: although I don't know why you need German or what kind (business or other types, more spoken, more written..), I have a few suggestions for general German 😊
      - if you have Disney+, they offer all their series and films in all the languages they dub them in, so you can watch many of them in German, too. I've watched 24, I'm rewatching Buffy... They have a great selection. The German used there is PERFECT, accentless and pure, like RP, modern RP or Standard British over here, which makes it easier to understand and a great introduction to spoken German. However, real Germans don't speak as flawlessly and clearly as that 😜
      - for more real life German, you should follow EASY GERMAN on UA-cam. It's a BRILLIANT channel! They have videos where they actively teach but what makes them stand out is the fact that they interview real people from the streets, which exposes you to accents, slang and all sorts of real usage of the language. It CAN be tricky but I'm sure it's divided into levels. They also have a podcast, where they speak real German as they are all native speakers, but it's slightly slower than native speed. And you can also subscribe to a partner they have (I think it's called SEEDLANG), where you can learn and do exercises and you get extra material regarding the UA-cam videos they release;
      - Netflix has a few German things, for example the series DAS LETZTE WORT;
      - There is a presenter called LUKE MOCKRIDGE who has a sort of talk show and you can find clips on UA-cam. Although it's brutal real life German, I weirdly find it easier to understand than some native TV series.
      Have fun learning German for me, too! 🤩😍
