Feels like all these high scoring games the opponent does well to guess it makes sense if one persons getting like 600+ their not blocking much if anything
A lot of competitive games tend to be very centred around Europe and North America so I’m glad that not only is high level play found around the globe but also that Will takes the time to point it out
My jaw actually, literally dropped at AFFIXABLE. That is ridiculous. Would love to see more videos about the African Scrabble scene, seems like there are so many strong players. Good luck against Wellington! (You'll need it 😝)
Whenever you show the player's rack pre-bingo I always pause for a couple of seconds to try to find it myself but never accomplish in doing so. Affixable especially was a great find! Excited for the Will vs Wellington matchup. You know, they don't call you the Dick Fosbury of chess for nothing.
not only is this play insane, the announcement at the end had me popping off, LET'S GO WILL!!!! we believe in you, best of luck in both competitions!!!! 😤
For those of you coming to this video after the fact, Will ended up winning this exhibition set 4 games to 2, but Wellington ended up winning the actual full tournament.
Will, In a world filled with justice, you would have 400,000 subs or maybe 400 million. Alas, we are in a world that favors watching cats play the piano. Hey, wait a minute, could you teach your cats to play the piano?
He was so insightful on commentary in the last World Championship Final too! Super excited for the set, and hopefully for some deep post-game commentary :)
The dictionary does have some very silly high-scoring bingoes. I think my favourite (because I actually got to play it in an online game once and spent the entire rest of the game giggling about it) is VAJAZZLE, which Collins defines as "to decorate the female genitals with jewellery". Sadly, VAJAYJAY is not yet valid. Please get on that, Scrabble lexicographers.
Crazy to see you go from under 10K and thinking “wow this guy deserves way more subs and attention his videos are so entertaining!” To today where I’m saying the same thing despite a massive milestone of 40K in the near future. I hope you continue to grow in popularity as you inspire others to play this game!
oh god, I can't imagine putting together a video about how someone set a record-breaking scoring play with the context that I was going to go up against them soon 😅
Yes, this isn’t common, but it definitely happens. There was one such situation in my previous video about a game between Josh Sokol and Jackson Smylie. In most cases, passing up a bingo involves holding the blank tile and having a strong scoring play that saves the blank for next move, giving you a better 2-turn sequence than taking the immediate bingo.
This is like the ultimate "who asked", but "Krone" is both the Danish and Norwegian currency (and Swedish too, but they spell it Krona), introduced at the same time back in the late 1800's as a common Scandinavian currency. They were actually interchangable across all three countries until World War 1, from that point on they've had different values. The Danish Krone is now worth the most, and is the only Krone directly tied to the value of the Euro. And "Kronen" is not the plural form, it's the definite singular form. Plural would be "Kroner" in both Danish and Norwegian, maybe that's legal too in US scrabble?
40k subs well deserved! Every time you upload I watch it asap and recommend your channel highly to my friends. We dont even play scrabble LMFAO Your videos are just the right length and palatable enough to the layman to be worth a watch every time it comes up in my feed. Keep doing what youre doing man
congrats on 40k!! i never knew about the scrabble championships (and the general competitive sport) but now I'm deeply invested in this amazing sport :D and your narration and explanations really make this that much more entertaining and fun to watch!
4:38 small correction: "kronen" is actually not plural but the definite form of krone in danish, norwegian and swedish, equivolant of saying "the krone"😊
Will, is it possible for you to show every tile on a player's rack during these recap videos? Surely it must be possible to reverse engineer which tiles they had on each turn by starting at the end of the game and going backwards? It could probably even be automated via code. Unless there's a detail I'm overlooking :)
I think normally I do this! This game wasn’t live streamed and the players didn’t record every rack for posterity, so I was working with Wellington’s year-old memories. Normally, the games I pick for videos do have full racks for both players.
When you said he won the worlds in 2015 I looked it up on Wikipedia, I noticed the last entry was 2019 but then no winners after that, did the world championship discontinue or something?
It’s mostly because of Mattel - they have the right to designate the event as the official championship, which they had done every other year for a while. but the players have held an event called the WESPA Championship during the off years, and I don’t think we see any distinction between those two things in our community.
Fun video! It'd be interesting to know what are the highest scoring non-bingo plays, as well as the highest scoring games with zero bingos in professional play.
For 178 points, I’d challenge almost anything! The Scrabble dictionary can be inconsistent, so given the move’s score and game situation (Chris essentially loses on the spot if the word is valid, so he needs it to somehow not be valid despite common sense), I think his decision was wise.
ik this is mostly unrelated to the video, but one time i almost had anxious, but there wasnt an s on the board, and i didnt have one myself(btw this was on an online game)
Great video as always with some excellent play and historical context! I noticed in this video there are more word challenges than I'm used to seeing - are these done purely from a defensive standpoint, like on the off chance it's not a valid play, it's worth sacrificing five points to challenge them off? Good luck this week as well!
Thank you! Yes, 3 challenges is a lot, but internationally, the 5-point rule makes it much less damaging to challenge a valid word, so you’ll see a few more “just making sure” type of challenges than usual, which is what I think these were.
Forget wishing Will or Wellington luck I wish for the show match to go the full 7 games. Also looking forward to watching all participants in the main event do you know who will be casting?
Someone help please! I've tried so hard to find the highest scoring single scrabble move *Actually Played In A Tournament* and I haven't been able to at all as every search result is just the theoretical best --- looks like cross-tables as used by will here would be helpful but I can't figure out how to search single moves let alone order by highest scoring. If anyone could help find a list I would appreciate it so much!!!!
To find stuff like that on cross-tables you need somebody with a higher level of access to the game database than is publicly available, so don’t worry! You’re not missing anything. This page has at least some good info: www.scrabbleplayers.org/w/Records
It is, but the only actual rule is that the word touch the center star. It’s actually kind of a funny faux debate within our scene and maybe worth a video someday.
all things considered, huge props to Chris for fighting back after getting hit with 400 points in consecutive turns
Feels like all these high scoring games the opponent does well to guess it makes sense if one persons getting like 600+ their not blocking much if anything
Not going to talk about the 11-letter DIRECTORIAL on the SQUAREd board?
probably (DIRECTOR)IAL but still funny how it was just ignored
You know, I intended to and somehow just forgot. Pretty incredible board there all around!
Tiles played progress bar is a good idea! It's a good casual spectator feature.
Tbf the thing I love the most in this game is CORONAE hooking KRONEN, with both words being related to crown
I once S-hooked HAPLOSES onto MEIOSES and felt like the biggest science nerd of all time in a casual scrabble game with me friends B-)

Awesome video. Possible followups: highest scoring nonbingo; montage of 7-overlaps; biggest out-bingo comebacks.
Sounds like Rachel's play still the highest scoring play to have a total word multiplier of under 3?
Gazumpers should be an interjection.
Sounds like something Shaggy from Scooby Doo would say.

Thank you for the progress bar!! It's a huge help to a scrabble noob like me, especially when I cant see all the tiles the players have.

Yes, this isn’t common, but it definitely happens. There was one such situation in my previous video about a game between Josh Sokol and Jackson Smylie.
