I visited Phnom Penh several years ago -- 10 years probably -- and although this video makes its point about being modern -- a tremendous growth of skyscrapers -- it misses the best part of the city: the stunning gardens and the river front. The streets are eerily empty -- which must be an earmark of the skyscraper district because the streets I experienced were quite busy.
They need to stop building skyscrapers. Why try to imitate the rest of the western world when we have our own unique and beautiful architecture that has so much value for the local culture and world renowned for its timeless beauty? Being foreign born Cambodian, I go to Cambodia to see Cambodia, not another version of LA, New York, or Hong Kong. Most tourists also think the same way too, however nowadays we try to avoid Phnom Penh altogether because most of the traditional charm is gone replaced with the congestion of skyscrapers which are like modern architectural tumors that spreads like cancer through historical cities. They should have at the very least preserve the colonial buildings and just added to Phnom Penh cityscape with the skyscrapers located in new district separate and distinct from the historical district.
Most countries in Asia are just obsessed with tall buildings especially in ASEAN where Cambodia is currently in, if you look at the top 20 countries with the most skyscrapers then you'll see 6 ASEAN countries in there, getting a skyscraper is like getting a Nike for them, you get to flex on others, and if you go ask random people on the street of Vietnam "what defines a country wealth" they'll say skyscraper lol
Wow amazing development. Did Cambodian people benefits from that development? As far as we see, millions of khmer people have no jobs and they have to illegally move to neighboring countries to find employment there. All the buildings we see in Phnom Penh don't belong to khmer people.
Is it all made by and made for Chinese people? If only native Cambodian people enjoy and benefit from this development then we can call it true development, all the best.
