    I also wonder if there is a certain amount of over saturation. I few years ago there weren’t that many channels or they were mostly a couple of mates rolling some dice and pointing a phone camera at the table. Now there appears to be a large number of channels with very professionally produced content and Warhammer is a niche hobby compared to fortnight or COD.

    The other problem is, especially now, you're going up against 'The Big Guns' aka Play On who have an entire team doing their stuff and thus have very slick looking productions. Not only that but they regularly rotate the people playing, meaning that it would probably lessen the amount of burnout a single person feels PLUS often time they'll have the minis painted by a professional company, especially if it's one who has sponsored the channel.
    For example of things not working GFN gaming (small channel but great for Kill Team content) would do narrative focused kill team battles and created a long running narrative campaign tying it all together and those battle reports disappeared for a while. The guy incharge of GFN gaming, when I asked what happened to them, came out a said that the amount of work they put in to those narrative games was just not worth it and that the normal non-narrative battlereports just got more consistent views.

    This is something I was chatting about on my live streams lately. I moved over from UA-cam because I had been doing it for 5 yrs at the time and my lack of editorial skills lead to bad numbers and burnout. I got a taste for live streaming and decided I'd move over to twitch. I'm only on 3 nights a week but it's less stress, you get instant feedback, and it counts as my working hours/hobby time too. I'm also making more in ad revenue now than I did from 5 years worth of weekly videos (sometimes 3 in a week). Throw in a dozen subs and it's easily the best decision I've made. Do I miss doing videos? Sure but doing a live "fuck around and find out" show trumps 2-3 late nights recording and editing. Cheers for this video 🤘😎

    With all my respect, I think the reason is Warhammer battle report needs HEAVY after edit to make it understandable.
    I was a Warhammer player myself, and I must say the game including too many dice roll and rules required tons of explanation.
    Most of the time, I can't even follow what is happening on a live battle report, and a well edited version cost way too much.

  • @chad534

    Most are far too long because people don't want to edit the videos down more than necessary. When I first came into the hobby at the beginning of 8th I remember telling a friend how long it took to play a single game and to this day it still blows me away that it takes as long as it does. 40k just flat out is not a good game, the lore is amazing and all that but 40k since the middle of 9th just hasn't been enjoyable, at least for me. I actually jumped to MESBG almost entirely and it's become my new obsession.

  • @johnbattyll6874
    @johnbattyll6874 7 місяців тому +1

    I think there is 3 things that have had an effect on the viewership of 40k.
    1) the wave of people getting into 40k at the start of 8th are draining away. Either because real life has got in the way ie family, career and/cost of living why watch something that makes you feel like your missing out
    2) Competion 40k at start of 8th there was not really another massive game system AoS was still finding its feet and fantasy player either went to 40k or infinity. Feels like the sterility of the game (lack of narrative) and the explosion of game systems like Bolt Action, Cruel Seas, Gloomtench 26, Star Wars Armada, X-wing, Legion along with GW owned competition like AoS, Old World, HH, KT, LI has pulled the player base away from 40k so people are playing what they watch.
    3) Quality, now this might sound counter intuitive but why I like watching Winters (however even his 40k bat reps I've not watched many of recently) and Ministry of Miniatures (historical wargames) is because I dont feel guilty of not giving my full attention to them. I can put it on and listen to it whilst I do the washing up or tidying the house, hanging up the washing. Stopping to watch when the game sounds exciting or interesting. Really over produced bat reps I feel obligated to watch it, due to the time and effort put in. I dont have the time to watch a 2hr bat rep on a system I cannot currently play or want to play. When I have film, tv series or bat reps on systems I want to play that I can be watching instead.
    Really enjoy your talking head content and I do think you are underrated as a channel. Keep up the hard work and I hope you get the success your hard work deserves.

    I've always felt like batreps are a bit of an impossible challenge for creators, any video over 10 minutes has an uphill battle against the retention gods of youtube; along side the delicate balance of not editing so much out people can't follow along, but also not leaving too much in it becomes slow and stale... • @TheDysartes
      @TheDysartes 7 місяців тому

      If you're setting up a channel to make a living, then you'll need to treat it as a new business. The average business will take roughly 3 years to break even, and on average it'll take around 3 years for most UA-cam channel to reach monetization. You'll need to factor in equipment costs, cost of living, possibly studio space and a ton of other additional costs. I would say don't go full time until you can create the same amount after costs as your paid in your current job. I would also say don't try to run before you can walk, don't try to emulate some of the bigger channels. They've been doing YT for years and built up to that standard. Start small and slowly build up.

  • @hectorc7080
    @hectorc7080 7 місяців тому

    UA-cam is a more difficult environment to monetize now it seems... but at the same time, my understanding is that 10th ed battles are much less appalling than previous edition ones... Not sure if that is true though.

  • @Harmfulshyguy

    I feel as though the bubble for certain UA-cam content relating to specialist hobby has burst and its not as profitable as what it used to be. Bat reps especially asits a longer time investment ansd requires a certain level of game knowledge to watch.
    Compared to painting or lore videos the production time and expenses is also huge as you need to account for so much in terms of crew and post production.

    I remember I got into your channel because of battle reports but respect that times change even though selfishly I’d love more BR content (Apologies for not being a secret millionaire oil dono baron to fuel that selfish dream)
    I remember on my channel when I made 2 (low effort/budget) BR reports & it was an eye opener. It took like 2 days to film/edit for 1hr 30 min video 💀 Great fun/experience but jeez… some effort.
    Totally agree on burnout & shaking it up. My channel would be classed as bottom pit dead but I’ve found talking/painting different themes keep it fresh & exciting… or it’s a case of last minute oh heck I need to make a low effort video 😂 It’s a hobby within a hobby for me but I respect the pressure of approaching a channel from a job perspective.

    I really WANT to love batreps. But a lot of what I see is moving models, measuring, banter and "hits on three, wounds on four", then rolling dice and rolling saves. Yes, that IS warhammer. But it's not fun to watch. It's fun to be in the room and see the players do their thing. To look at their models. But through a screen you lose the interaction, so batreps need to be heavily edited down for me to enjoy them. And even at that point, I find talking content much easier to enjoy. Whether it's strategy, lore, talk about the game in any other way.

    I think fundamentally 40k, 10th especially, just isn't a particularly interesting game to watch. GW stripped all the flavour out of it which leads to less varied games and less opportunities for emergent narratives to happen while playing. Oh look, the Marine player drew Investigate Signals so he has to send units into the bad behaviour corners for a turn to score points. Whoopdifucking do. For someone watching the game it is a completely meaningless and random interaction that is totally divorced from anything actually happening in-game. And it's not like the brand new detachment system gives the game much variety or narrative spice either, especially when your characters and psykers do One Thing and One Thing only. The days of your farseers being run in all manner of weird kooky weird ways is dead; now man stands behind the Avatar and does his GW-mandated One Ability. Unless he's on a bike, then it's another One Ability. For some reason.
    10th is just ass to watch, dude. Not much better to play either, unless you're super new or a garagelord who plays one game every 2 months.
