Nick Cave was part of that punk ethic that demanded total confrontation with the audience, begun with his early band THE BIRTHDAY PARTY in Melbourne. It's one thing to do it in a small club and quite another to do it within a huge arena. To be able to get right in the face of the audience and seek their involvement and then get it was very uplifting. And towards the end, the audience was represented by that girl in white sitting on the shoulders of her boyfriend. Pretty special.
I love how he puts his trust in the audience, to keep him perched up on the fence for the duration of the song. Incredibly intimate and memorable performance
Keep in mind also that the whole front section is V.I.P. Many of those people are friends, family, girlfriends/wives and other chosen insiders. Behind the V.I.P. section is a fence that separates them from the mass of the general audience from there on out. It's like this for almost any major concert event as such.
