I think one of the best changes I see is how easy it is to see the "at start of turn" or "end of turn" text. The worst part of sentinels, for me, wasn't tracking all the 1's, but reading what all the minions did every turn. Still I don't know if I can buy the new version. I think I already own everything from the first edition including the big box. There's just too much content there to start all over. Plus while the new artwork is mostly better, the old artwork has that janky charm. At this point I'd prefer a pvp card game.
When I first heard about Sentinels I didn't buy it because I was initially turned off by the art, but now it's just one of the reasons I love the game.
Really appreciate the detailed comparison. I think I prefer the old "indie" looking art vs the various comic era art they are going for here and that basic card layout is less attractive (especially the font as you mentioned). Really wish we could buy the tokens and health dials separately though. Those are super useful.
Nice side by side comparison! I backed Definitive Edition but I'm torn because I also have the Big Black Box. I plan to play Definitive and that will determine if I keep going with the revamp.
This was a great new vs. old review. I own and like the first edition and I have the definitive edition on the way, so it was great to get such helpful, detailed, side by side comparisons of the changes. Great job!
Me too! Got the core for $16 and the Rook City Renegades expansion for $20 on Prime Day, and we've have already played it 5 times in two days! We're having a blast trying out all the different combinations!
@@ten_oclock_scholar4690 I got the same deal...core like $16 and Rook for like $20. Crazy deal. We have already played like 3 games of it. I have the old version and this new version is much better as far as changes made to make it a bit less fiddly.
I have not player the new edition, but Bunker was way powerful in the previous version. Similar to rock, scissor, paper, its a matter of fighting the correct enemy. When i was using Bunker and came to realize Voss could not get rid of my cards... i was destroying thst bomb card in one turn and once took down a star ship in one turn. It got crazy. If Bunker builds up too fast, he is way too dangerous.
Thanks for the review. That new layout with the thin type makes this an easy pass. Not that I was really in the market for the new version of a game I passed on before.
Thanks for the review. I have been waiting to see a side by side video and this was a great one. I guess I'm struggling with spending money on something that doesn't seem to have a ton of changes. I am happy to see some rebalance but I don't think that's enough to make me dive into the definitive edition.
Glad I was able to help you make a decision. You are right, it’s still basically the same game. Change some keywords, and the old heroes still work in the reworked system.
Thanks for this side-by-side comparison. It is always helpful to see individual cards compared to see exact alterations between versions, as well as the commentary from someone who knows the game extremely well. I’ve been on the fence about picking up the new definitive edition since I haven’t played the original, however this looks like a solid reboot with a tremendous amount of value. I’ll keep an eye out for it at my FLGS
Great comparison. This game has been improved but it is the same gaming experience. I prefer this new version: more stuff, heroes that are now playable like Bunker and Absolute Zero. A good work.
The issue with just throwing more heroes on and not in their original themed sets is there was a story at play in the background with each set building to oblivion.
That’ll be a problem for a small number of players, but I imagine the majority (including me) never read any of that stuff in great detail. We just want more fun characters and modular combos
The new version is better in every single way, and it isn't even close. I am totally fine with the font but see where it could cause some issues. Such a fun game.
so can we take a moment to talk about haka since he wasn't featured? (maybe he has been since this video, but I've only seen a few so far) I absolutely love what they did to haka for definitive. I remember in the old version, Haka's hakas were cumbersome to use and he really didn't get to do a whole lot. I remember i'd pretty much just roll his xtreme prime warden hero card and he'd be the designated damage sponge whenever I needed one. But now? his hakas actually do stuff, and getting large numbers of them on board is encouraged.
Love both version of the game. I will say - to my knowledge - Visionary hasn't been confirmed yet. Story wise, I'd guess she'll come in a different one. Rook City Renegades doesn't really fit her. But Expatriette was in the old Core game and will be in this first expansion.
@@jonasstaleker700 Ok, I couldn't remember if she was or not. I don't know why part of me thoughts he was lol But we do know all of Dark Watch makes up 5 of the 6 heroes.
Perfect comparison, thank you! I panicked when I saw that the old mini-expansions (with a few exceptions) aren't being sold on their website anymore, and was really on the fence about this new version. After watching this video I think I'll end up getting the definitive edition, but I want to complete my collection of the old version first (sadly missed out on the big black box 😭).

“Janky charm” is a good way to put it. Although we would have gotten used to stick figures.

I agree I don't like the change in font. In the original they used traditional comic lett3ring fonts and the new ones of too line and basic.

Just got the definitive addition for a crazy discount and got it on a whim. Glad to see that someone with experience thinks it was an improvement

Fair enough!
New bunker is much better but i prefer the card layout and colours of the old one. Old cards had their charm while new ones looks a bit generic
Great comparison! Note that the keyword "discover" (like on Unity's hero power) lets you immediately PLAY the card you find! It's super powerful.
Thanks, we had miss-read that rule, and had just been adding the discovered cards to our hands.

If you are at all interested in the game, this is definitely the way to jump in. Smoother for new players too.
Great video, +1 for more sentinels content!
Between Jason and Mike, two huge fans of the game on the channel, so more content is likely ;)

Great comparison.Looks like some nice improvements to one of my fave games.
My boy AZ looks so much better now. :3
He’s a beast. And bunker is a superstar
Really excellent and articulate in depth video. Very helpful as I've been looking for a new card game to play.
You are quite welcome!

Just the one change of reviving Enduring Intersession, the most useless card in the old game, made Haka better. Yea, the new one is really good!
Do you know if the expansion is out yet
Someone on our Discord just received their pledge for Rook City, so I think it must have just started shipping to backers in the US.

Yes! She gets stared much more quickly.
