- '9 to 5' star Dabney Coleman has died. He was 92. A rep for the actor tells ET that he died at home on Thursday. Coleman was best-known for his villainous role opposite Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin in the 1980 comedy. He also starred in multiple TV shows and other feature films, including 'Tootsie,' 'WarGames,' 'The Beverly Hillbillies' and 'You've Got Mail.' Coleman's final role was playing Kevin Costner's father, John Dutton Sr., in a season 2 flashback on 'Yellowstone.'

He was one of those actors that never seemed to be “acting”. He was totally living in the moment. I really enjoyed watching his movies, especially Tootsie and 9 to 5.
Exactly.
And never without his trademark moustache.
Totally agree with you. He made any part he played looked natural. Thats the sign of a great actor . RIP Dabney. Thanks for all the great memories.
Wargames!
So true, seemed like he always fit right in effortlessly.
A fantastic actor.!!! RIP Dabney
One of those actors that was perfect in any role and pulled you right in. Always came across as humble and respectful. Was less then a month ago stumbled on a clip of him on UA-cam and went down rabbit hole looking at his old movie trailers, interviews, etc and then see this today. So sad, another classy and memorable actor leaves us.
A very great actor!!!! He was just wonderful!!! North Dallas Forty, Columbo, Nine to Five, John Duttons father etc..... What a powerhouse actor!!!! He will be so very missed... 😢😢😢.. 🙏🙏🙏.. 💔💔💔.. 🕊🕊🕊🕊......

Oh man this is a hard one. This man gave us so many laughs. The man we loved to hate in many of his roles. My favs are 9to5, Modern Problems and The Towering Inferno. RIP Sir Dabney Coleman.
On Columbo too, always with his chewing gum.
RIP. Recess was a huge part of my childhood.
His touching performance as John Dutton Sr. on Yellowstone brought me to tears.
RIP Mr. Coleman…
Loved him in 9 to 5!!!!❤❤❤❤
RAT POISION IN HIS COFFEE
HANOI JANE DID IT
May he rest in perfect peace.
One of my favorite actors and his movies always made me feel better and Im so sorry for his family because were never prepared to lose the people we love. There have been several actors who have passed away and I cry as though I knew them i guess because movies and sitcoms were an escape as I was a kid and even now sometimes. When me and my sister and brother were being raised by my our grandparents and in the 80s we only had 3 channels on tv because we were so out in the country so when we finally got a vcr it was amazing and 9 to 5 was one of our favorites that we would watch and never got tired of watching and my wonderful grandfather was a quiet man but when we would watch 9 to 5 and National Lampoons Vacation and Threes Company and the Andy Griffith Show the best part was my grandfather laughing so hard right along with us. I dont really know how else to explain it and im sorry for rambling but I hope those actors and their families knew how special they were to so many people.
Beautiful memory. ❤
RIP Dabney Coleman. You'll be missed. You were great as Principal Prickly on Recess, Chief Quimby on Inspector Gadget and many other great roles.
I forgot he was Quimby. Thanks.
I heard his voice in Disneys Recess My favorite childhood show. 🙏
Man, you’re not very good at your grammar are you?
People remember him for the 80s stuff, but towards the end of his career, he did a stint on Boardwalk Empire that was amazing. Thanks, Dabney. R.I.P. My kids and I will probably watch 9 to 5 today. Anyone remember a ridiculous little gem titled Short Time? He plays a cop trying to die in the line of duty for insurance for his family, but it's all due to a medical test mixup.
He will be missed my favorite movies with dabneys are on golden pond and Tootsie 👍👍👍
Thanks for the laughs and your amazing talent! RIP.🌹
R.I.P Dabney Coleman!!! 🙏🙏🙏
RIP. Loved "Drexell's Class."
Dabney Coleman always made me laugh out loud! Even in the 1969 Elvis Presley movie "The Trouble with Girls" where he tricked some little kids into buying illegal fireworks. And all his great roles in movies, and television series throughout the years. He even played a killer in two episodes of "Columbo" with Peter Falk. Rest in Peace Dabney 🙏
I liked him too . And that Columbo episode.
He was SGT. Murray in an early episode of Columbo and in the 90’s played a killer in a Columbo episode
And with his famous chewing gum also.
May He R.I.P 🙏🏽🕊💐
My childhood is dying. We are slowly losing all our 1980s heros and villians.
So true 😢
He will be deeply missed from 9 til 5 24/7 and 92 jams.❤
Sending prayers to family and friends 🙏
Rip.😢❤
Dabney Coleman may have been a star lately but he was best known as Slap Maxwell. It was the short lived show that lasted 22 episodes on NBC in 1987 that followed 7 years ago with Buffalo Bill which lasted 26 episodes. He'd been on countless appearances went from The Donna Reed Show to appearances on action and drama shows and then got into movies and guest appearances. But was best know as the boss Frank M. Hart in 9 to 5 and other films from 1965 to 2016. He was in the last film "Rules Don't Apply" and in his last appearances in "Sins of The Father" on Yellowstone. Even has a role with Aly & AJ in "Star Maps." E.T. Access Hollywood and Extra said There's word tonight that Coleman has died at 92. His wife Jean Hale in which Ann Courtney Harrell was divorced and his 4 children are with him.
Rest in peace sir god bless you sir may you rest peacefully ❤❤❤

Such a great and versatile actor. Brilliant in comedy, as we've seen in this 9 to 5 clip plus drama. He was brilliant in Columbo also.
I strongly believe Dabney Coleman's performance is what makes Sack Lunch... Without such a star, it's just another movie

You know something?
It was because of Disney that I first became familiar with Dabney Coleman.
I remember seeing him first in My Date With The President's Daughter (although it aired a lot on Disney Channel when I was growing up, I found out a few years ago it was actually made for The Wonderful World Of Disney on ABC).
I also saw him as Riverton Police Chief Quimby in one of my childhood cinematic mementos, the 1999 action comedy Inspector Gadget with Matthew Broderick [made for Disney].
He was also the voice of Principal Prickly in another Disney project = Recess : School's Out.
Besides appearing in movies that was made by the House Of Mouse, he appeared in two movies that I saw on Disney Channel all the way back in the early 2000s that were made by other studios.
One was the 1994 comedy Clifford with Martin Short, Charles Grodin [R.I.P.] and Mary Steenburgen.
His character Gerald Ellis was the boss to Grodin's Martin Daniels and was concealing (literally) a secret regarding his hairline. The first time I watched Clifford I didn't get to watch the remaining twenty minutes due to being sent to bed since the film was airing at the time (this was when the current millennium was starting out) I was to tuck in.
The second movie was the 1984 spy adventure film Cloak & Dagger. The night it was broadcast, I wasn't aware of its title and resulted in me not knowing what it was called for years.
Besides the title, I didn't instantly recognize Dabney Coleman as the character of Jack Flack or as the dad to Henry Thomas' Davey Osborne.
Like Clifford, the bedtime of my early years thwarted my goal of seeing the ending of this film.
I finally watched it during the peak of the pandemic quarantine and I am sorrowful I missed out on not seeing it sooner.
Later on, when my mom bought the VHS copy to the 1999 movie Stuart Little, I once again didn't recognize him right away as the doctor who examines Stuart after the incident with the washing machine. Only through subsequent viewings did I finally noticed who it was.
Despite never being a Hollywood A-lister like Tom Hanks or Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dabney Coleman was a man that was super committed to his craft and took on each role without faltering and was content with working steadily and not scurrying away into becoming an enigmatic recluse.
Farewell, Dabney.
You did your job so well.
RIP SIR 🙏🏽 Loved you in every character you played. Rest well.
The movie WarGames.
I remember him very well in that one.
Dabney Coleman a great actor from tv shows such Buffalo Bill NBC 1983/84,Slap Maxwell Story 1987/1988 ABC, Dexell's Class 1991/1992 Fox ,Madman of the People 1994/1995 NBC all great comedy and The Guardian on CBS 2001/2004 a great drama. From movies War Games,9 t0 5,Cloak/Dagger, Short Time, and Tootsie all great movies. Rest peace Dabney thanks for laugh 😂 .
Big love from England. Dabney came in strong in 9 to 5, and Tootsie. This mo-fo had a big set of balls ❤
Oh, he was on of my favorite actors, l loved him in working 9to5! Enjoy heaven!❤
My second favorite performance from Dabney Coleman in a feature film was his portrayal of the character of Harrison Wilby in the 1969 motion picture, "The Trouble With Girls"; an excellent movie starring Elvis Presley.
Very sad. He was such a good actor
Please rest in peace, Mr. Coleman. 🪦
No! He was such a good actor and nice guy, I was just wondering about him last night; I remembered how he'd had a sandwich named after him in Burbank! To find out now that he died then is shocking beyond the normal. RIP, Dabney, you were great!
One of the best at acting as the villain 👏 God speed.
RIP Dabney ... and thanks for the memories!
i'm shocked i've been a fan for many years i always wanted them to do a 9 to 5 sequel with him in it in some form getting revenge for getting fired
And getting lost in the Brazilian jungle;
Rest in paradise, "Principal Prickly".
😢
He was great in 9 to 5 you hated his character so much he's gonna be missed 💙🙏
I really like this guy in Cloak and Dagger and Drexell’s Class. Really good actor and seemed like the mustache played a big part in his whole look, like Selleck.
Action Jack!
Praying for his family and friends and fans 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Cloak and dagger one of my favorites
Loved him in Wargames too!
He may be remembered for his staring roles in big shot live action shows in his prime, but I'll never forget his voice role as Principal Prickly from "Recess."
It's sad to lose such a legend, and I hope his family is doing well.💐
Fun fact: it was Coleman who was originally slated to be the agent in "Tootsie". However, Hoffman insisted on director Sydney Pollack to add realism to the role! RIP to both
Wow. Very sad news 😞
Rip Dabney Coleman never knew until today that he was the voice of Principal Prickly off of one of my childhood shows Disney's Recess😢
My condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace. 😢
I am 45 i remember him in the 80s❤
I remember seeing Dabney Coleman in The Muppets Take Manhattan and Stuart Little. May he rest in peace 😢🙏
R.I.P. You've got mail
He was amazing in the movie Cloak and Dagger.
What a fun actor to watch thank you ❤
Prayers for his family
I can’t believe the guy who played Principal Prickley is gone. Rest in Peace.
Here's to the man who gave us the funniest car chase scene in film history.....
SHORT TIME (1990)
God speed. May we meet some distant day...❤
Liked him for voicing as
Principal Peter Prickly
in both TV Series and
Movie Version of
“Disney’s Recess”… 😭🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
He was superb in,
'On Golden Pond.'
I'll always remember Cloak & Dagger.
R.I.P Dabney Coleman
He was great as a "smut peddler" in the movie Dragnet.
My sincere condolences 🙏 for family
Inspector Gadget and My Date With The President’s Daughter are the only movies I can name he was in.
Wow, didn't know he was still alive. He was one of those guys (I think) just known as an actor who did his job and wasn't all over the press. If people can track down "Buffalo Bill" that was a groundbreaking and short lived show.
Principal Prickly
We’ll miss you
Rip dabney prayers for his family
