There was a French guy who proved this by working on his heart rate while swimming with sharks. When his heart rate went up then the sharks would get nervous and excited, they even bit him a little to examine whether he was a fish they could eat. And when he relaxed, so did they and he was able to pet them like dogs. He eventually did this in South Africa with great whites. Not sure if it's still there, but the doc was on YT years ago. Crazy man free swimming with great whites! You're not cathing me trying to do this, but he did prove that sharks are no threat to us if we behave properly around them.

Collisions and being caught up in nets accidentally is also an issue (although much less so). Many countries contributed to the initial decline prior to protections being put in place, including the UK and US (they are only now showing signs of recovering in UK waters, for instance)
Sharks should be understood and not feared, they are more important to the ocean than most humans think. If they are gone, the whole oceanic food chain is affected and probably humans and other land animals. I admire these unique animals.
