Hey, Steve here. In this video, I look at compressor pedals: Why use a compressor? What are compressor pedals useful for? How to use a compressor? I tackle these question by looking at the typical features we see of compressor pedals, and by showing you some examples of how they typically work. Hope you find it useful! For this video I used a Boss CS-3 Compressor.

My cat said she would help with switching the pedal on and off, but she just slept instead... typical.

I wish people would review compressor pedals the way you have demonstrated this pedal. They pick the same blues riffs that benefit none-so-ever from compression with other effects running simultaneously. Now I know this pedal is a solid choice but unfortunately, I'm still lost in the abyss when it comes to gauging the quality of other comp pedals.

I spent my life looking for this. I always wanted THAT in my sound but never been quite sure about what it was. Dead serious. Thank you!

The Behringer Compressor/Sustainer is nearly a clone of the Boss with just a lot more plastic for cheap. I'd recommend that for a starting point.

I used to think compressors were kind of useless before this. I'm considering getting one now haha. I had no idea they did this, I'd never heard anyone describe compressors like that.

I just bought the Warden after watching that CHON video. I’m so excited for my pedal to get here in the mail, thank you for this! A lot of demos of compression are blues players. Showing gear applied to this kind of music and specifically tapping and lots of defined hammer ons/pull offs is a godsend. Love this channel :)

Thanks for the great video and explanation of compression featuring the CS-3! I have one myself and I have wondered a lot how to use it. I did pay attention to how it removed the quality of the dynamic when I activated, but I also really love to play soft parts with fingerpicking and sometimes the notes doesn't get quite strong, but now I see what other use this pedal has. I have a better idea now of when to use it and when not to.

Great video, man. Really appreciate you continuing to extend this series. There's always a lot of great information which, at least for me, has helped me grow creatively. I literally just got the EQD The Warden comp on Thursday and it sounds amazing, it not only does compression very well with a lot of flexibility, but it also adds a little bit of sparkle that sounds nice. Those guys at Earthquaker know what they're doing! (I'm in no way affiliated with EQD). It uses optical technology vs FET internally. Any experience with both? Any comparisons you could make or any explanations as to why one might go with one over the other?

Thanks for making a clear video on what exactly a compressor is; until now all I've heard is jargon and buzzwords to describe the purpose of a compressor. Keep it up!
