  • In this video I show you how to make a swirl filter for my aquaponics system. I use a 55 gallon drum which you can buy on craigslist for pretty cheap. As well as uni-seals, and PVC pipe + fittings. It helps get many of the solids out of your aquaponics system. The swirl it creates causes the solids to settle on the bottom of the barrel.

    With soft materials like plastic, run that hole saw backward. If it cuts, finish the hole. If it does not, only run it backward for the last bits of cutting. This makes a better hole for the Uniseal. And most hole saws allow you to replace the drill. But this also means that the drill length is probably adjustable.

      I will try that next time
      Thank you for the advice

    Will definitely use the swirl in my 2nd barrel, where my submersible pump will live. Thanks !

    Good work. Hat tip: if you start the hole sawing and then put it in reverse ig makes less sweet and you dont have to file the holes. Larry Hall has a garden channel that talks about this.

      Yes good point. I did learn about that from someone else commenting on this same video below. And have used it on both plastic and fiberglass tanks. With the plastic tanks I still find that you have to file the holes after doing it that way. It could just be that the hole saws I have are just very old and over used.
      Thank you for pointing that out

    How do you control flow rate into the swirl? Atm I am new at aquaponics designs. Thank you

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  3 роки тому

      You would want to use some valves. And possibly create a bypass incase the pump is to strong, that way you can control the flow of water.

    does it have to be a round barrel.. my pond filter is already made with bricks and cement but the compartment i want to modify and put in a swirl filter is 1 ft by 1 ft square and about 3 feet height..

      No it does not have to be a round tank. However for the swirl affect a round tank is more effective than a square one.
      I would instead do a radial flow filter. That should be more effective than doing a swirl filter.

    I assume the height of the outflow to your other filter has to be lower than the height of the water in your fish tank. is that correct?

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  5 років тому

      Yes everything is gravity fed after it leaves my fish tank.
      The fish tank is the highest point so the water can flow down to everything else.
      The filters are the next highest point. And from there it goes to the grow beds.

    Hi new subscriber here , good video . I have a question sir what is the height of the swirl filter from the bottom of the drum ? Thank you

      I don't remember what I did on that particular filter since I don't have it any more. However I would say between 6" to 12" should be good.

      Ya when I made the filter I didn't have water running yet. But I can do an update on the working filter.
