    I had a buckle break halfway through a 7 day trek, thankfully I was able to improvise a repair to continue the hike... I always carry a spare now! Never something I'd considered before that trip

    I wear the Xero Terraflex shoes, and I love them! I was wearing the Xero Prios on a daily basis for years, and for some silly reason, when I went hiking, I was still wearing heavy, padded hiking boots. But after years wearing barefoot shoes daily, my feet changed, and I can't squeeze them into "regular" shape shoes anymore. So now I wear feet shaped shoes ALL the time, even on trail. And I love how I can feel the trail under my feet and bend and move my feet so comfortably. Total hike changer!

    I've never seen the repair/replacement buckle. It looks very useful.

    Agree on the Deuce of Shades. Didn't use it long due to the pain. Switch to the Bogler (thinks GGG) and love it. Even use it when planting flowers in rather rocking ends around house.

      If the handle hurts wrap Paracord around it make handling it softer

    The combination of the Bogler trowel and the smart water bidet is a game changer. Not having to carry or dispose of tp is awesome. I also carry the mycelium tablets from Pact. Drop one in the cat hole before you do your business and it helps break your waste down significantly faster, reducing your impact on the spaces we all love.
    I also started using toe socks last year. Injinji’s were ok but I have weirdly long toes and wound up trying a few other brands to get a better fit. Landed on a brand from New Zealand called Creepers that are phenomenal. Similar in feel to Darn Tough merino light hikers, with a thin breathable upper, and no-seam toes that fit perfectly. They come in crew length and ankle length and are stupid comfy.

    The Xoskins didn’t work well for me for long hikes. Love toe socks but wool is just more comfortable wet or dry. I wear either toe liner + thicker sock or thicker toe socks. Usually bring one extra pair and I’m good. ❤

    youre struggling with the deuce trowel, because youre using it wrong.. youre supposed to use the narrow end first, to break up the soil, then use the wider end to scoop it out. ive never had any issues digging holes with mine at all

      @matthewkenny2344 Рік тому

      Same, have never had issues in a wide variety of soil types.
      Also, are we going to pretend that sawing through roots is really LNT?

    Thanks for mentioning the podcast episode! We'll go listen to that! We have zero drop shoes and are pretty used to them. But we definitely need to train our feet more to prepare for a thruhike this summer.

    I concur that the bidet and the Vargo trowel are excellent gear items. I just used them this week.
    With the bidet I don't need TP, and I don't suffer a rash like I did using TP.
    The Vargo trowel does an excellent job sawing through roots. It also doubles as a spare tent stake.
    I will have to remember those socks. I had another brand of toe socks rip on my first few days of using them.
    My fav way of avoiding blisters on my feet is to smear my feet with Vick's Vapor Rub and by wearing Darn Tough socks over toe socks.
    The Vapor Rub works better than Body Glide on my feet. Plus it kills foot fungus - something that can ruin a through-hiker with the dreaded trench foot. I smelled a guy suffering trench foot on his solo AT attempt. His feet literally smell like death. I doubt he finished the trail. Trench foot can get serious.
    You can also use Vapor Rub as an accelerant for starting camp fires. It is always an excellent treatment for cystic pimples and boils (which are fortunately rare afflictions for me, but it is there if I need it). And of course, it is great for a stuffy nose.
    The buckle seems cool, but I already carry a lot in my pack. I think my spare paracord will suffice in a pinch.

    I agree with the trowel change 100%, the deuce was my 1st trowel but after one trip I was over it, so got bogler instead, 10/10. What Osprey Pack is that?

    Could you compare MFS -X2 with toaks 1600ml (or 1300ml)
    Would be a very helpful video. Would it be worth to carry heavier MFS but cool faster or Toaks is lighter and maybe also boil water faster.? Thanks

    I use a much sturdier trowel. I could put a nice wooden handle on it need be, and the best part is also the comfortable handle and the serrated edge!

    My friend 3D printed a cap like thing for my deuce of spades that saved my hands. But I also agree it's not my favorite poop scoop to use, my gsi handled one was much easier, but the deuce is lighter and easier to pack.
    I might have to checkout the Bogler one though. I'll have to see if it fits in my poop kit taco bag

    Justin @Good in the Woods has some great tips. I picked up one of those buckles to fix a strap on my kayak. Have you seen his chair stuff sack hack?
    I've got to try those toe socks. I've been wearing toe shoes since the early 2000's. (usually w/out socks except for colder seasons)

    I've heard that many people aren't using the deuce of spades correctly. According to what I heard recently (cannot recall where), you're supposed to turn the spade around and use the handle to dig up the ground when it's really compacted or rocky. I dunno who says your "supposed" to use it like that, but I could definitely see how that may be more likely to break up the dirt than using the spade itself. Thoughts?

    • @matthewkenny2344
      @matthewkenny2344 Рік тому

      That's how it's supposed to be used, per the instructions. Have used the trowel like that and never had any issues.

    I forgot I have one of those buckles in my bag! Hopefully never need it but remember ordering it when the other Justin (so many Justins haha) mentioned it. I'm in need of some additional socks and will give these a try. Curious how they'll compare to the injinji.

    See now you have me curious. What's wrong with the chair? On a side note, I believe that's the helinox chair zero high back. I have both the chair zero highback and the chair zero regular. As a 6'2 guy, I don't feel comfortable in the regular chair zero. It digs into the sides on my back, and feels unsupportive under me. The highback chair zero I have neither of these issues with. In fact even though it's narrower I don't actually notice that or feel that's a problem either. Yes it's a half pound heavier, but to me it's the lightest chair I could find that's still comfortable.

    A couple years ago I cracked my main hipbelt buckle after an employee at the airport ran it over with a wheelchair (and passenger) he was pushing while my pack was on the ground... Wish I had known about this, but a quick jb welding did the trick too
