    My grandma makes the best dumplings ever. They're amazing, the way she works the dough makes them so chewy and juicy. Better than the ones you'll find in the stores.She's originally from Shandong and has been making them all her life so it's her specialty. Sadly she's got Alzheimer's Disease now so those dumplings are all but a distant memory.

    The way you guys describe the unity that goes into making dumplings is the equivalent to making tamales in a Mexican home. I remember my tias (aunts), my mother and I staying up late to make all kinds of tamales chicken, pork, elote (corn), rajas con queso (jalapenos with cheese) or corundas which comes from my native state of Michoacán.

    I love dumplings! I was married to a Ukrainian and made theirs and the Russian version. After the pelmeni was cooked, I saved the broth with all the meat and vegetable juices. I used the broth to make rice and boil potatoes in. That dumpling broth, no matter the origin gave FANTASTIC flavor. I hope you got a to-go box for the rest of those yummy dumplings!😊 So glad I had a sandwich before watching this.

    I actually just had a massive hotpot/dumpling party to celebrate the end of term with my classmates in my Master's program here in Cambridge. Everyone had a great time, and it was even one girl's first time ever trying a dumpling! A big thanks to you guys for this video and your hotpot one - they've been great tools for bringing my hugely international group of friends and colleagues together. :)

    That Shu Mai (or Shao Mai in Mandarin) they showed is actually from the region near Shanghai. The Cantonese Shu Mai's are usually filled with pork and shrimp. The rice-filled kind is more Shanghaiese.

    I always pan fry my dumplings for a couple of minutes and then put a little water into the pan, put the lid on and steam them. Works great every single time! Even when you cook them directly out of the freezer. Like, when you make a big batch and freeze them raw, not from the frozen section in a supermarket!

      +Off the Great Wall You guys are the best! Because of this video, I just did a search for the best dumplings in Dallas, and I found a place I am going to try.
      I have a couple of questions, if you see this and have time to respond. (1) some of the reviews for the place I found recommended something called xiao long bao. Could you tell me what that is? (2) What is the difference between soup dumplings and steamed dumplings? is it simply that soup dumplings have some sort of broth inside?
      I like all of your channels, BTW. You have also piqued my interest in Korean BBQ. PS - Utilize Yi more. She is a great complement to you guys.

    • @bmwx5
      @bmwx5 9 років тому +1

      +WATCHMAN 117
      xiao long bao is soup dumpling. reason why its called soup dumpling is because the meat mixture contains bits of pork fat that melts while being steamed.
      Thus giving you soupy liquid when you bite into it. be extremely careful tho it will burn your mouth. Let it cool down a bit before eating

    Seriously, if Mike house would be raided by the food, he would have no problem describing raiders (food) to police... but then again by the time police would arrive Mike would have already dealt with the food.

    Dumplings are amazing. One of my favorite foods of all time. Regular meat dumplings (not so much since I'm just coming off a vegetarian diet-- I don't like to eat meat except on rare occasions) like potstickers (shumai are my favorite savory dumplings), tangyuan, simple bread dumplings like my mom makes with chicken and gravy, small plain rice dumplings in Korean-style pumpkin/squash soup... Now I'm craving dumplings. .-.

    I have 1/2 Slavic Heritage, and my parent's used to have our version of dumplings, which are Pierogies! In Russia, they are called "Pelmeny" or little ears, just like you had mentioned about specific Chinese dumplings. My favorites are the dessert ones, filled with plums or strawberries, dusted in powder sugar after being sauteed in butter sauce. I LOVE Chinese dumplings, so it was good to learn about these, thanks for the show!

    For Latinos, making tamales at Christmas seems to be similar to how you describe making dumplings for Chinese people: a family activity where everybody has a role (preparing the banana leaves, cooking the masa, making the recado--or sauce, chopping up the meat, putting the tamal together, and then waiting HOURS for everything to steam). Love your vids!

    I was up in Beijing in 2013 for the first time and even though i've been traveling a lot since I was seven, its the first time I actually got to eat PROPER Chinese foods, not the westernized versions of them. There was this tiny hole in the wall type stall that was literally the first place I got food from after unpacking and I had this steamed pork bun - mind BLOWN! I was there for 8 months and I think i literally tried dumplings from every stall, shop, stand and when I had time, a proper restaurant. I LOVE dumplings, dim sum and pretty much everything in between. Currently working on perfecting my Xiao Long Bao! Wish me luck! p.s - nothing hotter than a man who loves and appreciates good food, its history and the skill involved in preparation - you guys are both stunning! XX

      I made some pot stickers a while ago (pan fried dumplings) after a recipe from the dumpling sisters.
      I just altered the filling by mixing finely chopped mushrooms, some soy, a little bit of red peppers and some scallions together, fried it in a pan for just a few minutes with some soy sauce and some spices like a little curry, salt, chili.
      Filled the homemade wrappers with it, then fried the dumplings just until they had a slightly golden crust, then add about half a cup of water to the pan (I used a flat bottom wok) and cover to steam the dumplings for a couple of minutes, about long enough for the water to disappear (tip: try your filling, if it's very salty, use regular water, if it's a bit bland use slightly salted water)
      The filling was very delicious, I ate almost all of them alone xD

    I very much agree with you lads.....When we were in Beijing i noticed that the Dumplings were boiled more than fried......whereas when we got to Shanghai we found the dumplings fried which was ok as we found the food style of Shanghai to be very much what we get back home......with Beijing being very different in food style and texture.......in which i loved

    The Chestnut dumplings that Mike was talking about may have been Chieu Zhou dumplings, they have chestnuts, peanuts, and I think pine nuts inside wrapped in the thick rice pei, slightly similar to the Ha Gao pei. I had this variety as it's my grandfather's region, I hope this helps and you guys find out what it is! :D

      Dylan Otto xiao long bao has soup in the bao and its usually steamed. My ex is chinese she spent most of the time schooling me in chinese food lol

      Kha Pham so they're practically the same thing aren't they? Oh n the word I forgot was Dim Sum (what I hear many ppl call the xiau long bao)

    • @HanaOccasionally
      @HanaOccasionally 7 років тому +1

      Dylan Otto They aren't the same since when you bite into them soup comes out. The soup is inside the dumpling. while the other is just regular dumplings inside a soup/ broth

    I like dumplings. Two favorites types of dumplings is the shrimp and soup in a dumpling with solely chili sauce because I love spicy food. I lived in San Francisco-Bay Area all my life, but now, live in Mexico City studying medicine and in currently going to start my second year in August.

    Omg this made me so hungry! I love, love, love Asian food! I live in the middle of nowhere surrounded by cows and corn fields. So if I want great Asian food I have to drive over an hour away to Madison Wisconsin. Or I make it myself, which sometimes turns out better. Can you guys do a few shows showcasing some of your favorite Asian dishes. My absolute fave is a steamed pork bun!!!!! If I could eat that everyday I would, lol.

    That bit about "the dumpling diet" reminds me of what we call "the duck diet" here in Greek -- that is, "eating anything you like and acting the duck." "To act the duck" (i.e. pretending to be a duck, literally) is a metaphorical expression for "to pretend not doing something bad."
