Some pawpaw like Wabash oxidize brown fast. Nyomi's, Tallahatchie & Shenadoah oxidize very slow. They need to be picked very ripe & let sit off the tree for a lot longer than most others. You eat Tallahatchie green!
The (Tallahatchie) obviously wasn't ripe, as not supposed to be firm & is usually 27% sugar. Green River Belle & Horn are around 21% sugar. Need to let fruits get ripe before picking.
Wild paw paw in Virginia taste varied a lot but nothing expected if you have eaten a few cultivars. From watery to almost firm but not as firm as Susquehanna. They are varied from bland (maybe underripe when picked) to very sweet. The smell is anywhere from horrid (closer to stink bug but not that bad) to Sweetsop or Mango. I found that the bitter is in all paw paw around the seed and skin. That is also varied a lot with wild paw paw. The best one is just as good as the Mango and Susquehanna. However, it's smaller and with more seed.
Love your videos on the Paw Paw! Especially from your perspective of someone who has had cherimoya, sweetsop, and some of the other Anonas. I like hearing you note those similarities and differences. From a long time cherimoya and atemoya grower i I have decided to plant some paw paws next year in my garden 😁
Where can I get an Al horn white paw paw, and green river belle?! I’ve been looking online, they’re not really for sale, some sights promote it, but they’re always out of stock if the sight says it has it :(
I might have to graft my seedling pawpaws to these bigger Cherimoya flavored ones you tasted. My two seedling trees make small fruit mostly banana flavor very yellow flesh
wow your seedling trees gave you fruits already? Try it this spring and graft multiple cultivars to one tree. I pre-ordered my 2023 scions from England's nursery.
@@CHITheThirstyGardener this video just came back on my feed, I did some grafting! Thanks for the inspiration . Grafted Al Horn's White, Tropical Treat, IXL, Lehman's Chiffon
Thanks for sharing! I been wanting to add green river belle! I'm like you, I like them green not brown or black. I don't like wild pawpaw. I don't like metallic aftertaste.
What does a cherimoya taste like?? I'm trying to select another pawpaw tree for my yard, only room for one more, so this is good information for me especially since I can't find these to buy to taste myself.
@@CHITheThirstyGardener I have a Shenandoah that bear lots of fruit and one grown from a wild seed that mostly just fertilizes the Shenandoah. The Shenandoah is very mild with a pudding like texture. It's really good but much too subtle. The wild tree only produces a little fruit and they are small, tend to be bitter, and mostly seeds. Although the fruit from both trees tastes a little different each year. I enjoy most fruits. Like every fruit I've ever eaten EXCEPT grapefruit. I like melons, papaya, mango, bananas, apples, plums, peaches, berries of all sorts.
You are lucky to have fruiting trees :) Base on what you already have. I think it might be a good idea to consider something with a richer profile like 2-10, Susquehana, or Maria's Joy. I really like Halvin too. I dedicated 2 of my trees to graft different cultivars on them.
@@loriki8766 it was quite easy to graft Paw Paw. I did either cleft or Z-graft depending on the size difference between scion and rootstock, almost 100% success
@@CHITheThirstyGardener be sure & get Maria’s Joy, VE-21, Benny’s Favorite & NC-1. All of which are probably as rich or richer than Jerry's Big Girl. NC-1 stronger banana than JBG, Maria’s Joy fruity tutti bubble gum, VE-21 more Cherimoya.
If from seeds about 8-10 yrs. If bought as a grafted tree 4-6 yrs. My grafted trees that was bought 3 years ago, flowered this year but they all dropped.
I am getting fruit this year from plants raised from 7 year old KSU seedling. My advice is to raise in deep, large pots for the first two years - with some shade protection. Then plant were they can get some decent sun. Lots of watering.
Hello! My name is Roman, I am from Ukraine. I live in Lviv. I also love plants and in particular azimin. I planted a garden with 65 azimina trees. Bought 10 varieties in Italy. And the rest he himself grew from a bone. They are already 3-4 years old. I want to inoculate with American good varieties. I am interested in Geri Lehman's varieties. Can you help me with this? I want to buy either grafted seedlings or cuttings for grafting.
Thank you for the information! I might just have to do that. It’s hard to get a tree that bears that fruit. I have a cluster of paw paw trees, so I don’t mind attempting to graft onto them
Thank you for the great review of less common varieties. Your way of describing flavors is really engaging and helpful. Regard the “Lehman 1” cultivar, Jerry Lehman introduced several numbered cultivars. Do you know if it is 166-13 aka Maria’s Joy? 166-66? 166-21?

^_^ thanks

That was a very entertaining taste test. Lol. I enjoyed it , even though I wasn't tasting the paw paws.
Excellent tasting video! And with several hard to find varieties as well. Thank you for your input on these!
I'm impressed too. Thank you! I'm impressed too. Hopefully I get to try the more common varieties
Thank you for the knowledge and wisdom you share about the paw paw.
I never tried one yet but I'm definitely going to check them out now.
You should! season is coming to an end soon

Nobody mentions caramel taste. I found my pawpaws tasted most like a mixture of banana and caramel.
