Thank goodness you highlighted the dangers from drop bears (Thylarctos plummetus)
🤣
I once saw a tourist attacked by one, i walked by and it looked at me noticed i was a local then kept on attacking the tourist.
I live with tiger snakes and copperheads (Austrelaps). I am concerned about snakes too but just as I got used to them, they can get used to you. Terry tiger snake lives in an old caravan near where I live and is now unconcerned when I walk past. I had a friend just up the road a bit who was able to step over his local tiger snake to get into the back door. The snake like sunbathing there on warm days.
Best way to avoid snakes is to stay at home curled up in a ball in the corner of a room. "Note i don't take this advice"
Complete risk aversion is complete productivity aversion...
What is a drop bear? I sound ridiculous im sure but i honestly have no clue. Also...I just found your videos and your a new favorite, so informative and to the point, keep up the amazing work and Thank You for taking the time to get the info out there.
Haha. Drop bears are a subspecies of Koala that has developed the ability to scare tourists by dropping on them out of gum trees ;)
Awww. Here where I live it's the occasional snake, I'd love a drop 🐻@@GeologyUpSkill
My uncle came over from New Zealand in the 80's for a holiday and ended up so terrified of drop bears he has never returned to Australia! 🤣
I always like your videos! As a geologist in Indonesia this is pretty much our what we've encountered everyday! This is a great basic introduction for a beginner geologist!
Yep. Biggest snake I ever saw was a reticulated python in Sulawesi.
@@GeologyUpSkill I really don't want to messed things up with that one 😅
Nice video. The gloves are probably also a good idea. Closest I've ever come to being bitten was when I once reached to the ground to clear some leaves from around a survey pin and there was was copperhead coiled around it.
Gloves are good for lots of reasons. I still prefer to keep my fingers out of strike range!
Copperheads are famous for their perfect camouflage , which when combined with their tendency to remain absolutely motionless until the last instant , makes them doubly dangerous , since you probably will never see them until after they have struck .
My closest call was while looking for float in a dry stream bed , that had lots of tall grass on the gravel bars , and lots of patches of dry leaves .
I inadvertently managed to step on a copperhead , but luckily managed to avoid getting bitten .
Later , what looked to be a thorn stuck in the pants leg of my blue jeans , turned out to be a fang .
I had a few extra beers that night in camp .
Great info that I also share with others on the trail! Thank You
Great. Sharing will help your friends and me :)
Always love your videos. Thank's for sharing.
Many thanks. I love making them!
Extremely informative, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great message sir , stay strong and happy
Thanks Ahmad.
Keep up the good work mate
Thankyou!
First time going on a field trip today, thanks for the tip. Though it's a school field trip
Hope it goes well. The outdoors is a wonderful place!
I saw a hoop snake take out a tourist one day !
Doh! I forgot to mention Hoop snakes!
Work in the bush planting native plants in seasonal creek beds and poisoning weeds in swamps. Sometimes you can’t see your feet and all you can do is make a lot of vibrations so the snakes leave the area. Never seen a snake in the 10 years doing it.
Gaiters would be a good idea in that job!
Great Video as always, and good advice! I live in snake country, was interested what brand are your gators?
The ones I'm using now are Wilderness Equipment Bush Gaiters. They are a bit more breathable than most designs, but still get pretty warm in summer!
@@GeologyUpSkill we used to wear bits of stovepipe/flashing, the rattlesnakes can be plentiful here . The zipper on yours is a big upgrade from laces and inflexible scraps metal - thanks!
Can't wait to graduate and be the geologist and seek all this action 😊
Best job in the world!
I love snakes and they love me. On a job where they hadn't seen a snake in 3 years, I saw three in three weeks. My first three weeks on the job.
The highlight being the full size Eastern Brown that curled up in the canvas cover of my swag in the middle of the night. The next one in my bed was a little carpet python.
I like these better than the centipede in my sock.
They didn't have youtube tutorials back then.
Hahahahaha, drop bears...
Just speak with an Australian accent and you'll be fine!
I faced scorpion one time..
Similar strategies work for scorpions!
