Was it a Fletcher class destroyer? those DD's were buidlt just before the war or during the war. Indeed, they participated in the pacific, among many places, and even in some cases a few were hit by kamikazes. As Argentine interested in militaey history amazes me how many ships the US buildt in only a couple of years (1942-1945), for instance, 175 Fletcher class' destroyers and 120 Balao class' submarines. It must have been an extraordinaey effort in terms of economy, particulaly in the home front. In some cases these WW2 ships were fit with FRAM programs in the postwar and kept into service; in other cases these ships were sold o transferred as part of the Foreign Military Program in the 50's and 60's. In South America for instance, Argentina, Chile and Brazil had these ships transferred, that's why I was asking. Some of them were kept in inventory as far as early 80's.

I was a Veterans Affairs nurse for 35 years. The vets would only talk about their combat time with others that had similar experiences. Vietnam Vets in the early 1990’s would not talk about their combat time from the early 1970’s. It takes decades for a combat vet to open up. Some shell shocked WW2 Vets would duck under their beds when we had fire alarm drills at the end of the month. Some shit never ever leaves your mind. God Bless them all.

I would run home from grade school everyday just to watch Combat and Sergeant Sanders, then soon after they started making it in color which was really great. I went on to graduate from high school and enlisted in the US army largely due to watching this series as a young boy. It came on everyday at 3:30pm to 4 o clock back then on channel three, we had a antenna on the roof with a set of rabbit ears which brought the station in most days in Black & white back then, eventually it later come out in color eventually the tv series ended. Sadly Vic Morrow later died tragically while starring in a Twilight program , a helicopter crashed during filming and the blades decapitated Vic Morrow. While he was carrying a small boy in his arms during the filming both he and the little boy were killed sadly.

When I was in the Army, our most basic infantry technique was to fire and maneuver, find the closest cover, close on the enemy, and either shoot of grenade them....But the German Soldiers always seem to abandon this type of technique all too often on the show, they will eventually just run right out into the open all to often, exposing themselves to getting hit....

Nice that the kraut decided it was a good time for a luxurious foot bath when he knew the other side of the river bank was crawling with Amerikaner from the firefight 5 minutes before.

For the most part, in the Napoleonic wars rifles were not used, the shoulder weapon for most of the infantry was the musket. Can't really aim a musket, you just point them.
However, after that volley, they usually charged with fixed bayonets and at that point, it does become personal.

This is filmed at the Korbel winery California champagne, right in Guernville Ca. The opening jeep scene drives right by the still there winery and the still there Brandy tower. Now tours and free tastings. Nice place beautifully landscaped. They chose the area because of similarity to Normandy France. The main road is the highway leading to the winery, also shots of the vineyards. Apparently Korbel would let them blow up the tree stumps to clear the fields. Great show Vic Morrow the original tough guy.

Before rifled muskets/rifles you hardly needed sights. That's why in the American Revolution the scattered American woodsmen with their rifled pieces were picking off British officers. Brits complained that it was unsportsmanlike to use aimed fire from concealement. Probably about that time the phrase; "All's Fair in Love and War" was originated... Happy Thanksgiving!

Yeah, the difference between "aimed fire" and "volley" is actually minimal. Millions of Soldiers were killed in the Napoleonic wars (France, Russia, Great Britain, etc.) yet virtually ALL the rifle fire was volleys aimed in the direction of the enemy. Like a machine gunner "spraying" the enemy is not actually trying to kill any individual enemy soldier but he sure does manage to kill a few! It's less personal that way...
