Really like those guys. No fuss engineers who love what they're doing. Great. Hope they continue to do well.
Jay is the freakin man. Seriously. So smart, involved in and a true lover of motorsports
Thank you for showcasing American made products, Jay. Beautiful bikes.
The Dutch slang term for this model bike is "spitsvechter", which translates to "rush hour fighter". It has all weather fairing and the straight sitting position lets you see over car roofs and helps with quick zigzagging.
Upright seating position is for comfort and allows for long road trips.
I sure agree with you but I'm a novice rider and I could name a few veteran Harley riders who wouldn't. How do you refer to this model and style of bike in english? Is this a Tourer?
They said it in the video....
+Daniel van Slooten Sportstourer
+Daniel van Slooten People are assholes here. Lol, tourer, "sport touring bike", are both fine english translations for this type of bike.
Never heard of Motus but what a way to make a first impression - beautiful looking bike!
And again, there's nothing wrong with simplicity or older ideas - as Jay says, simplicity means reliability, and older technology often has generations of refinement that keeps it well ahead of new technology for years, even decades.
There is nothing wrong with older ideas, but there is when you charge modern prices for old technology.
Not if the older technology performs better than the new. It's all about results.
I agree, the pushrod motor has its advantages as stated in this video, smaller package especially in head design. Corvette still uses a pushrod motor for this reason. plus reliability and easy to modify ie add power adders. PLUS the sound!!!!!! is awesome!!!
And BTW any top of the line 1000cc Sport bike engine will weigh 130lbs. this "old school" motor is 140. and puts out better power than super bikes.
Yes, the 1000cc sport bike engine does weigh about the same as the Motus, but that 'engine' also includes the transmission, clutch, etc that the Motus engine needs to be bolted up to...so add in another 30-40 lbs for that!
In a truer comparison, my '96 Triumph Trophy 1200 weighs in at 520 lbs dry. Add fuel and luggage to meet what they were stating in the show, and their overall weight comes out close enough to call a draw, meaning I give up about 45 to 65 ponies and around 50 lb/ft of torque to this monster for the same weight!!
The price seems a bit stiff until you compare it with any of the top-line sport-touring rigs, which puts it pretty close to level! And unless you really need a radio/ intercom or ABS or coupled braking, it gives you a much more powerful and nimbler package with all the right stuff to ride 6-800 mile days for weeks and never stress the engine a bit... Until they are forced to add the ABS/ integrated braking crap, this would be the only new American (and likely anywhere else, too!) bike I would give up my Trophy for!
So proud of these guys and their amazing creation. Harley, Indian and Motus...unbelievable achievement! A true inspiration!!
Man I hope this company makes it. I absolutely love this bike. I might just have to have one.
Thank you for making it made in USA!
Cool bike, that v4 would be sweet in a classic mini.
I just said a Miata but the Mini is almost as good.
I was thinking beach buggy.
How about a Bug Eye Sprite?
Put the engine into a japanese kei car like the Suzuki alto works 660 or the Honda Beat
I was thinking Formula ford
I work for one of the fortunate motorcycle dealerships that sell these beautiful machines. Our showroom model -- an MSTR -- sits not ten feet away from my desk -- a terrific vantage point from which to admire this wonderful work of mechanical art. May Brian and Lee prosper, as they certainly deserve to do.
That's really incredible that they design and build their own engine and transmission. Very impressive!! Very glad I heard about this manufacturer. I will spread the word to my biker friends, no doubt!
great to see a true American Motorcycle CO start from the ground up. Best wishes to MOTUS
So glad to see another AMERICAN MADE motorcycle and the V4 resurrected from scratch go into full production and sales. All the best to your company, your motorcycle and your engine's future!!
My friend bought a Motus Sport Tourer...LOVES it! Says it's his favorite road bike.
one of the nicest street bikes I've ever seen....
The design looks amazing, Frame and motor especially! The only thing is that front faring looks outdated almost 90's-ish. These guys are legends Way to go guys!
" LOVE IT ". Way to go Jay... Love the way these guys approached these bikes
That would make a great police bike.
THIS
That would be a home run dream for any inventor, right? Selling hundreds of models to a city or county?
Seeing that this bike is a real high quality coupled with a robust engine [off the shelf proven auto parts] it should be a no brainier. Typical police vehicles easily do more than 50k miles a year.
DiscoR53 Plus it seems a lot smoother. I asked a few CHP guys how they like their BMW bikes over the Harleys and they said hands down they love the BMW, this should give the BMW a really good run for its money, if not better at least serviceability.
Do they do the same kind of bids that they do with police cruisers where companies have their "intercepter" tested by the police?
THAT
god i wish these vids were longer... i could listen to jay talk about engines all day long TBH
I was lucky enough last summer to do a factory tour of Motus. Was really impressed with the bike and the two founders of the company. They gave us a great tour and you could tell they we're real motorcyclist who wanted to build a great motorcycle. They had a small formula 1 type race car that they had put their motor in and it was awesome too. Great work guys!
dude!! i would love a crate engine for a project , good job much respect !!!!
love these guys, real American heros
??
heroes(;
how are they a hero?
Forget the sport tourers, show that street fighter in the back row!
Hear, HEAR!
Best exhaust note I've ever heard from a motorcycle. Incredible.
If jay bought one that would be testimonial of how good the bike is.
This bushel is perfect for JAY LENO... he's not only an en enthusiast, but he's very educated in motorcycles/cars
he knows exactly whats going on, what to ask, and he knows what he's talking about
Would love to get my hands on one of these!
I"m putting this out there for all Miata drivers, this is the engine we've all been looking for. This is the only missing link we've been looking for to make these little sports cars respectable. I thought a v six was the answer but I think this is it.
I own a V-Max, there's something about the torque curve that makes shifting optional. It sounds great too.
If you didn't know that Jay Leno made his living as a comedian and late night talk show host, one would think that he ran a NASCAR , SCCA or Moto GP team. His knowledge and interest in motorsports and the manner in which he treats the people on this show is beyond great. He's a national treasure.
I'm not much of a fan of modern motorcycle design, but I like this. Also that engine is real enticing. Gotta start saving up
I want one of these so badly. Been saving up but still have a few years to go. :D
I Think that that engine could have SEVERAL applications even in a hybrid context a little R&D would be very interesting. Well Done
Good thinkin' 99.
As an Australian, this is what impresses me about American entrepreneurial spirit. The dream, the passion and dedication to make it happen, and the quality finished product rolling out onto the streets. Well done, guys. Fucking well done..
Not gonna lie, I love that motor.
Saw this bike a few years back as a prototype at Barber in Birmingham. Great to see them succeeding with this effort. With Brembo and Ohlins components truly a great package.
They have since rode to the salt flats(stock Production) and set 2 Land speed records and then road the bikes back to Alabama, Not trailered..
I just love Jay Lenos garage, all the different 'chines and Jay either knows all the interesting things or asks all the right questions!!!
36 thousand dollars, are they fucking serious? you could get two s1000xrs for that kinda money and still have enough left over to tour the world.
I know they aren't very smart.
They're American made, so there's a premium right there. The engine isn't outsourced, and they're a small company. Yeah, the price is high for something that looks like it's from the early 2000's, however people are willing to pay a premium on something that is very well made and made in America. People are buying $100k cars, and I bet for those people $36k is a small addition to their bills if the monthly payments are a couple hundred dollars.
They have a lot of money to recoup from developing their own engine and what not. You can't expect them to compete price wise with the mass market bikes.
Its a small company, not a multi billion dollar corporation.
+HDaviator well they'll be out of business before the weeks out at those prices
wow! how did I miss that Leno was covering motorcycles! He is pretty knowledgeable!
Harley, Indian and Motus. What about Victory?
+sneescampers is that what you were going to say?
+Jeffery Crawford ikr?
sneescampers it wasn't even the grammar, it was the fact you posted 3 x's
Indian and Victory are both made by Polaris.... so i guess Jay thought INdian covered it all??
EBR
I'm not a bike guy, but I was impressed with it's features. Thanks Jay.....
For some reason I'm more interested in the motor than the bike itself.
I think the bikes would look better naked...
What a beautiful machine and story.
pretty sweet stuff.
And it has a Center Stand !! I hope the rest of the industry takes note.
MOTUS 😃
I live in Atlanta and was unaware of this marvel. I'm sold.
Really good looking motor.
I saw them in Indianapolis during the MotoGP weekend. The bikes looks great in person. The supercharged cafe racer looked amazing. Well done, wish you the best of luck.
I want to see more about the procharged bike
Got to hand it to these lads, ok it's expensive but it's quality and it offers a unique riding experience. I'd love one.
Very interesting motorcycle I hope they succeed. EBR is back by the way and their new 1190RX is very appealing and affordable for a super bike.
O really. That's nice to hear
No way theyll succeed with a STARTING price tag of 36,000
+rkellyonu Your not getting what I was saying. Fair enough you would not buy one but I am talking economy of scale here
+DJ MotoVlogs Yeah, and you will if people buy them at a premium for a while
A new EBR 1190RX costs $13,999 and a new 1190SX costs $12,999.
Those guys have come a long way in 8 yrs, nice. Thanks Jay.
Motu's I will gladly give you my money. I was going to ride with Indian but after watching this video I'm sold.
Did you actually pull the trigger and purchase one?
Out of my league, so I'm glad you were able to give it a tryout!
I want this engine in a MG midget or Austin Sprite
Exactly, that's engine thas should have come in my bugeye sprite. That would have made it a world class car.
I like the idea of one in a UTV - it's got the brain turning.... now to get the wife to turn away for a moment ;)
yes i think this company is probably going to make more money licensing their powerplant for use in other applications than they will selling motorcycles
It does have an exhaust note that's almost more car like than motorcycle.
sounds cool but it would never fit. the sprite and midget engine bays are really narrow because the passengers feet go up beside the engine. the pedal boxes are right beside the engine and only a very narrow straight 4 fits without a ton of work and compromising foot space might fit in an mgb though with fender headers like they do with v8 swaps but really its to small for a b. wouldnt be worth it
I'm really happy they didn't abandon good looks and put an exhaust on each side, come on other high performance bikes!! I know it's slightly more efficient to only have one exhaust but two looks so much cooler!
Well done guys. I will find a way to buy one.
Great to see "Made in USA" is still around. The designs look good to me. Jay was riding what I'd call a sport touring model. I really liked the naked bikes and would love to take the supercharged one for a spin!
The man spake truth - making your own motor's important. Too many make a marque with someone else's engine (heart).
Got to love the original and classics. I wish America produced more quality like this to spec with this amount of passion.
Americans claim they want more American made products, but as soon as one like this comes out with a higher price tag (because of higher employee costs, materials, etc, etc, etc), they want nothing to do with it and would rather buy a cheaper, non-American made version...kinda funny.
Not me. I did by American, an amazing Victory Vision. for about $13,000.00 less. For me it was the best decision I ever made. The Vision is an awesome ride.
Dennis M Cool buddy. Love your GSX1250FA!
+Pendemic Thanks, Sir! What a beauty that bike has been. Bought her new in 2011 and have 63,000 on the clock. I have been freshening her up a bit these days and am thrilled with the results so far. the bike is basically a guided missile now!
Paying more for less doesn't make any sense.
I can buy an American sportbike bike for less than half the cost of that. they are trying to recover R&D costs big time here.
I got to test ride the Motus. Loved it. I wish them great success and sell a lot of bikes. Then maybe the price will come down a bit so I can get one.
Still want one.
Looks good and sounds awesome
Those guys must be pumped to get that kind of praise from Jay leno
The engine looks very similar in size and layout to the Taunus V-4 used in classic Saabs!
That's what I was thinking. Stuff one in a Capri and you have a modern V4 Capri like they made for the British market. It would be sick in the Saab as well. Had to know you'd respond, love your videos. LOL
Finally an American motorcycle I am interested.
Nice...great interview and test drive👍
My dad has one of these. Worth every penny.
Beautiful bike. Do you still have it?
I do appreciate their efforts but the styling of this bike seems like it's stuck in the 2000s.
agreed, reminds me of a late 1990's era tourer, new styling now is about more subtle small lights and binkers
What kind of styling do you want? It's designed to be ridden all day and keep the driver out of the wind, and with the V4, it has a special sound all it's own, it doesn't sound like everything else on the road. It's a driver's motorcycle with any of the fancy aids that can cause problems. It doesn't matter if you're riding in California or the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia, it looks like the bike that will get you there and back.
accept a V4 is 2 cylinders more than you need. If you want reliable you use less cylinders not more. Just look at all the adventure bikes out there they have 1 or 2 cylinders for a reason. Also touring now is all about weight, who wants to haul all that weight around, no one.
A fully loaded Harley is around 800 pounds, and from what I've seen working at a toll plaza, it's the young guys who are on 2 wheels, the guys over 50 are going fro trikes, sometimes with V8s in them, If you're highway touring 1 or 2 cylinders isn't going to make it, not for long distance.
i think it's a beautiful timeless look. if you prefer a gsxr then go buy one
What a GREAT bike. Great engine too. Avery nice job.
HEAVY BREATHING... I WANT THIS ENGINE FOR MY FERDD.
I wonder if motus would like to sponsor my ford by:
-Helping me restore it
-Put a motus v4 on it
-Car would need to be road legal in finland
In return i would put motus V4 badges on my ford and make a global build thread of it and make a video series of it on my own V4 garage channel and in the same time advertise motus globally.
That would be awesome.
+V4 Garage they sell just the block if i remember correctly. Although that was 4 years ago or so.
Looks like an amazing bike to do serious road trips with
Ohlin suspension , Brembo brakes, Akrapovic exhaust....All American?
all companies that have large engineering branches in the US.
Yeah, I caught that too. But I just took it in the context of "whatever"!
I see your point. If only they could build a bike that is on par with the japanese bikes, both in price and performance. You would think that a domestic would be cheaper than an import lol. What we need more of are affordable and reliable sport tourers, supersports, and naked/standards that look AND handle well. Less cruisers and more bikes that matter.
FlyDangerous Right on. If they came in as the slightly next level FJR and/or Connie, more or less on par with the K1600 at the K's price point I believe that is a much more attractive package. I could do that, man. I would do that. I believe this could be done with the base model and accessory catalog pretty easily. Hell yeah, still offer the R model - if ya want the crazy stuff, by crackie, you can have it! I think this makes sense. But what the hell do I know?!? LOL!!
i kinda want to move to cali and join the highway patrol just so i can go to work on a k1600 every day. its a bitchen motorcycle.
Jay You forgot about Erik Buell Racing in the list of American made bikes, they are still making bikes like the 1190RX and 1190SX in East Troy Wisconsin.
ummmm.... that v4 has so many potential uses!!!! get it out there!!!
They talked about their crate motor program. You can buy these engines separately.
Id like that V4 on a lawnmower :) or better yet stick it in a MINI or a Smart Car.
***** for $13,000..........
if it came with the bike maybe..
Thanks for showing me this one Jay. They built their own engine. Now there’s a feather in your cap!
awesome engine indeed, but hey! The 90s called, they want their design back
+Marten Dekker Actually no about the a Abarth. And the argument you made about an electric bike applies to most other ikea
+Marten Dekker Factually speaking the 'big' LS engine in the Vette is lighter and more compact than it's competitors engines. And a less large and heavy engine helps chassis dynamics.
Exhaust on this bike is sick!
What no mention of EBR...sad
EBR went out of business.
+wesintx they are back
wrong www.cycleworld.com/2016/03/22/erik-buell-racing-is-reborn-again-with-new-investors-motorcycle-news
+daybreaK oh please, they will be broke again in a year, tops.
okleydokley maybe but currently theyre not
"some days the last days of old technology are better than the first days of new technology." Great quote Jay!! .. might well have come from a Latin speaking Alabaman....
What about victory motorcycles?
Maple leaves.
Polaris Industries, headquartered in Medina, Minnesota, owns both Indian Motorcycles & Victory Motorcycles.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polaris_Industries
Jay... Your The Man. Always Helping Out The Young Companys. Love The Sound. Thanks Again
What about Victory motorcycles????
He forgott EBR To
I guess he didn't mention them because they're owned by Polaris who also own Indian, and EBR have been struggling with business for a while, but they seem to be back.
Yeah, big insult there.
EBR is back? thought he officially closed his doors.
exactly! I am a Vision Pilot myself and I LOVE this bike! It's pretty fast, very nimble for a big ol' space ship, great range, incredible feature set, and by far the most comfortable bike I have ever owned. Yeah, l will keep the Vision thank you!
the bike seems good and all... but i just fell in love with that engine!! what a beatifull mini v4!!
Reminds me of Moto Guzzi
Amazing bike. And what a phenomenal sound.
RIP Motus, lets hope that engine lives on in something else.
Fantastic engine and a killer bike! The best sounding engine on any bike!!
tim allen 96 impala ??? soon??
yeah more tim allen anything
COOL 2016 Motus MSTR - Jay Leno's Garage
AWSOME bikes guys... But 30k!?... That's the price of a new truck....great job though
Love the Motus! Real American power. I have ridden this bike and met Brian and Lee. Very approachable , passionate guys building something that I am proud of. I live an hour from where they hand build them. I hope one is in my future.
it costs double what a similar bmw does, unless you love the engine like a child. i cant see why anyone would buy one over a bmw
Not after you replace the drive line & trans in your bmw after being told that it is NOT covered under warranty.
BMW's have no soul
oh it's a motorcycle video? immediate thumbs up
Only 3 US motorcycle manufacturers...
Zero
ATK
Lightning Motorcycles
Brammo/Polaris
Alta
I'm sure there are others.
ebr
yep, Jay's an idiot!
Rokon and Victory. Still sure there are more
ATK? You might want to check the website.
Confederate, Arch,...
Really encouraging to see this being made in the USA. I can think of a lot of uses for the engine if it is as reliable as advertised. No mention of fuel mileage, but that would depend on the operator. With the torque it should do well on the mileage.
This is fantastic, unfortunately $35k you can get a fully loaded BMW GS for about $10k less with service available in every state.
The main point of this bike (besides performance) from a design perspective was to last. Not saying BMW wouldn't last but I'd bet this bike would easily run for 300k miles without a problem. Being that most of the parts are from good old corvette tried and true parts. That extra 10k is paying for reliability. change the oil, fluid, chain and filters on good terms and it would probably last forever as a daily driver. Even under hard use I bet this would still last 300k with only minor issues or power losses.
Different bikes, Jay said it best "you don't see yourself coming and going"... if you want to be different/more exclusive, this is the bike for you. Not knocking BMW, they make an amazing, quality product; but they're different bikes and have different buyers. Not better, not worse, just different.
Yeah and you're going to break down....because bmw has the WORST reliability on earth....literally RANKED!
300k miles without problem based on what data? GM isn't building the engines a small company in Alabama is building the engines. There is no data backing up your 300k mile reliability. Also let me point out that the motorcycle doesn't have ABS, traction control, or riding modes and before you say "I don't want any of those things" with that price it should include all the latest technology.
My BMW motorcycle has had zero problems in 10k miles and 18 months.
The ride started with three bikes.
Quickly became a solo ride.
HILARIOUS !! 😆🥴
