I'm the only one in my tap class who can't do pullbacks. I think the one foot exercise is really helping me though. I find I can't get high enough off the ground to make a clear sound. Looking through these comments makes me feel better to learn there are more people struggling with this move. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for this video, I finally got my pullbacks today and I thought I'd share what my teacher said because it was really helpful and what helped me 'get it'. Basically he said to imagine you are sitting on a chair. Your gut instinct would be to lean forward in order to balance yourself but he said not to do that. The second thing he said was not to focus on the first sound and to just drag your foot against the floor. I'd been struggling with my pullbacks for weeks, and I got it in literally 2 minutes after learning that. I hope this is helpful to anyone out there still struggling!
thank you for sharing this. The instruction to let the feet drag on the floor seems to lead to some very exciting half way point. previously I was really leaping up in the air and had no idea how to coordinate the movements for the first sound. I guess the answer is to keep the feet low to the ground (almost dragging) otherwise there won't be time to make both sound before landing
In Gdansk, Poland, too much Vodka, after midnight and 63 years of age, doing this barefoot much to my wife's annoyance! Need to grow up but, what the heck, thanks Shelby😊
Thanks so much for this video! I have an audition on Saturday (my first musical audition in two years) and this is one of the steps that will be in the combination. I was really worried because I've never been able to do my pullbacks at all, but this video was so helpful! I think I finally have a good idea on how to do them. Thank you for everything!
hi Shelby, I almost make it on toe tap pullback now, I found a detail by view the video frame by frame, that when we jump to make a toe tap pullback, we tend to push our foot forward a bit to make the toe in the air. I hope this clue can help others succeed in this skill as well.
I have yet to find a video that describes the mechanics of how to leap up in the air to then touch the toes down. I either scrape the toes or don't touch at all.
Hey Shelby! I was wondering if you could insight on the pullback, when I do a pullback on flat foot it looks sounds amazing, but when I have to multiple on the ball of my feet, I kind of "kick" a little bit forward, ever so slightly to make the sound as I jump. But apparently having a little forward movement or "kick" is wrong Thoughts?
Edwin Boq A lot of people have that problem. You have to think about jumping up and back and slicing the floor. Bringing your feet forward takes time that you just don't have because of gravity.
Those toe ones are still quite challenging. The few times i get them i think are a fluke. 😅 I just get that irritating scrape sound I think because I struggle to separate the ankle action and knee action into two separate movements.
This was the craziest thing: the first time I tried this in class, just horsing around, I got it by accident. Then my teacher was so surprised that it freaked me out and I couldn't ever do it again 😂. The only thing I can think is that I must have been more relaxed the first time? So my ankles were loose enough to allow my feet to "flop" down and hit the floor instead of staying stiff..? What do you think of that theory? Now I'm horribly out of shape so I'd be scared to try one. 🤔
To make that first Sound, i always have to get on my heels first, i just dont get it how to brush back with both feet at the same time!?? With one foot, like you mentioned, there is no problem, but as i cant put my weight on the standing foot....ahfhfvxk:-))))

Hmm, well I would have to see a video of you attempting it to be able to give you my suggestions of how to fix it...
I have the same problem, my teacher was no help so I came to UA-cam. Seems it’s no help either...
I can finally do that:) after several weeks' practicing, but I can't make it on toe tap
Congrats!
